Trip Notes Trip Code: TAY Country: USA Amended: Oct 2013 Edition No: ARO Valid from: 01 Jan Dec 2014 Yellowstone Wildlife Walks HIGHLIGHTS Three of the USA's most beautiful National Parks - enjoy the wilderness of Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton Tracking wolves in Yellowstone amidst geysers and hot springs Walking in some of the USA's best mountain areas in Glacier and Grand Teton Several walks accompanied by specialist wildlife, geology and wilderness guides Itinerary can be done in reverse on selected dates Small groups with a maximum size of 12 and almost all meals included! SUMMARY Right in the middle of the greater Rockies Mountain Range, well away from North America's main population centres, lie three very different, but truly spectacular national parks. An area with perhaps the most dense population of large mammals in all of North America - bear, wolves, coyotes, wolverines, lynx, moose and bison are on the viewing menu. The scenery varies from colourful meadows, canyons and waterfalls to fiery volcanic pools, glaciated rocky spires and broad sentinel peaks. The best way to explore this huge terrain is by a mix of walking and driving - road to access the parks' wild interior and on foot to get amongst the wildlife and high up onto the mountains. Yellowstone, the world's first ever national park, is almost 3,500 square miles of remarkable wilderness: wolves, grizzlies, mountains, pineforest and waterfalls at one turn, vibrantly coloured volcanic springs, steaming geysers, bison and wild-flower meadows at the other. This huge variety is believed to be caused by the Rocky Mountains passing over a geological hot-spot deep within the earth (like Hawaii and the Galapagos) with the result being a succession of massive volcanic events, often extremely violent. Three giant eruptions have occurred over the last 2.1 million years, with the largest producing 2,500 times more ash than the Mount St Helen's explosion of We will visit the famous geysers and multi-coloured, steaming, hot, spring pools with a local geologist, hike deep within the park and go looking for wildlife with a specialist wolf-tracker. Wolves were reintroduced to the park after a 70 year absence in 1995 and have successfully bred and spread across the park and formed several distinct packs - if we are lucky enough to see one its natural environment it will undoubtedly be a highlight. Grand Teton National Park was founded in 1929 and is named after the Teton's highest peak, which rises to 4,197m (13,770ft). This glaciated mountain range is particularly striking as the sharp, fang like peaks rise straight from the colourful and fertile valley floor without foothills and are surrounded by a scattering of turquoise lakes, making for outstanding walking territory. Whilst wolves aren't present here, the fauna is still rich, with coyote, eagle and moose particular highlights. The last and most northerly park that we visit on this trip borders Canada and is the aptly named Glacier National Park. Established in 1910, the park houses many of the contiguous United States' most spectacular glaciers, recently made famous due to their rapid retreat in the face of climate change. The remaining glaciers are purely remnants of this region's glaciation during the last ice-age. The mountains in this park are pure testament to this, characterised by enormous, broad U-valleys, huge cliffs and sentinel peaks all carved by the churning rivers of ice. This is perhaps the best place in the US (outside of Alaska) to spot Grizzly bear, as their populations remain at historic high levels. 2 This is a trip for those who are interested in the incredible wildlife and geology of Yellowstone and the Central Rockies. All the walks are entirely optional and you can often take tougher or lighter walks than those chosen for the group, so this trip's grading is only a guide. We use specialist local guides, in addition to the tour leader, to make the most of our visit to the parks; their skills in tracking and spotting wildlife as well as their unique and intimate knowledge of the surroundings is invaluable. proximity to Grand Teton National Park. Although first and foremost a ski-resort, the area of Jackson Hole certainly maintains a 'Wild West' feeling! On arrival, we'll settle into our campground and enjoy a short walk in the area (approx. 4-5km, hours). Today's driving time: approx. 6 hours. (L,D) Day 2 (Day 3 Ex London) Grand Teton N.P. Famed for its soaring, fang like peaks, the 64km Grand Teton Range represents the archetypal jagged mountainscape. Rocky spires, forest and lakes fill the park, with more than 12 pinnacles reaching over 12,000ft. Rich in fauna, inhabitants of the area include buffalo, elk, Black and Grizzly bear, Bighorn sheep, moose and mule deer. There are many self-guided hikes available today, walking amidst dramatic scenery and appreciating the geology and nature of the area. Due to the national park regulations, our leader can't hike with the group but he/she will prepare you for today's walk, which is likely to be Amphitheater Lake, a scenic hike with excellent views of the Teton Mountains (approx. 13km, 5 hours). Today's driving time: approx. 1 hour. (B,L,D) Day 3 (Day 4 Ex London) Yellowstone N.P. IS THIS TRIP FOR YOU? Activity Level: 3 (Moderate). Please see the introductory pages of the trekking holidays brochure or our website for more important information on classification and grading. This trip is for those wanting to explore the beautiful central mountains and wilderness areas of the USA, whilst learning about the region's remarkable wildlife and geology. It is suitable for both walkers and wildlife lovers due to the varied itinerary. Whilst most of the trip will be high, it's very unlikely that we'll go above an altitude of 3,000m (usually 1,800-2,500m). You should be reasonably active to get the most out of this trip, however, most walks are optional so you may choose to participate in only some of them if you wish. Please note that particularly for early season departures, walks may need to be shortened due to avalanche risk or snow on the trails. Walks are mostly done on well maintained trails, although some sections might be affected by water damage or be a little exposed. Expect trails to be quite rocky - a walking pole for stability is recommended. The roads are mostly paved and in very good condition, but there are some long travelling days due to the huge distances covered. All journeys have regular stops built in to break up the distances and for any wildlife that we may spot from our vehicle, since most of the routes pass through fascinating scenery. We generally use campgrounds for more than one night at a time, allowing us a base from which to explore each area. Inevitably this means that in the morning we'll need to take a short drive to the start of our walking trail or to view wildlife or scenery. In Yellowstone, traffic is often held up by 'wildlife road jams' so you should be prepared for additional time in the minibus. LAND ONLY ITINERARY The entries in bold at the end of each day indicate the meals included (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner). Day 1 (Day 2 Ex London) To Jackson Hole After breakfast and a trip briefing we drive north along Route 15, leaving Salt Lake City and Utah behind. Our journey takes us alongside mountains and lakes, crossing Idaho and passing through the beautiful Targhee National Forest before we arrive into the valley of Jackson Hole in the state of Wyoming. This popular mountain resort hosts an abundance of skiiers in the winter months, whilst summer sees walkers and other thrill seekers enjoying the area and its After breakfast we pack up camp and drive to Yellowstone National Park, our home for the next four nights. Part of the highway clings to the side of the 24km long Jackson Lake, the expansive ice-blue water reflecting the Teton Range on a clear day. Entering Yellowstone, the scenery starts to change from striking jagged peaks to colourful open meadows and rolling terrain, the regular lava flows having flattened the largest geological features in the south of the park. This afternoon we'll take a walk amidst this fascinating volcanic environment (approx. 8km, 2.5 hours) before returning to set up camp. Today's driving time: approx. 3 hours. (B,L,D) Day 4 (Day 5 Ex London) Yellowstone N.P. When Yellowstone National Park was created in 1872, Northern Rocky Mountain wolves (a subspecies of the Grey wolf) were native to the area. In the years after, predator control was regularly practiced and the wolf population faced a huge decline, with packs rarely sighted towards the 1940s. In 1995, 66 young wild wolves from Alberta were re-introduced to the park. They have bred very succesfully and there are now thought to be more than 1,000 wolves in the Greater Yellowstone Area. We spend today with a specialist wolf tracking guide, venturing into the park wilderness by foot and vehicle to learn about these remarkable animals. Modern tracking is performed by using technology such as radio collars. Our guide will explain this to us, along with how wolves live and hunt together in Yellowstone and how the pack hierarchy works. It's important to note that we may not always be lucky enough to see wolves, but this is our goal and at the same time we are likely to see numerous other wildlife species. Today's driving time: approx. 2.5 hours. (B,L,D) Day 5 (Day 6 Ex London) Yellowstone N.P. Yellowstone overflows with geothermal features; geysers, bubbling mud pools, bright multicoloured hot springs and fumaroles! The park is famous for its volcanic history and there are estimated to be 10,000 thermal features - nowhere else on earth (not even Iceland or New Zealand!) can boast its concentration of geysers which are scattered amongst several distinct geyser basins. We spend the day with a local geology guide to explore the many effects of volcanism for which the park is famous. The multicoloured springs (caused by the hot, nutrient-rich water being more suitable for different species of coloured bacteria at different temperatures) are a particular photographic highlight. Our specialist guide will explain about these volcanic hot spots and the various causes of the phenomena that we will see today, leading walks around some of the parks most interesting features (distances vary depending on the walks taken). Today's driving time: approx. 2 hours. (B,L,D) Day 6 (Day 7 Ex London) Yellowstone N.P. Today we'll take our knowledge of Yellowstone's wildlife and geology onto a wilderness daywalk in the park. Our route will depend on the group's general ability and fitness, but will offer both scenic and natural interest. Our aim is to leave some of the well known geysers 2
and crowds behind, exploring this true wilderness together for our last day in spectacular Yellowstone. It is likely this will involve a walk to view the Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls (approx. 6km, hours). More strenuous options are available and the leader will advise on these, depending on the wishes of the group. Today's driving time: approx. 1-2 hours. (B,L,D) Day 7 (Day 8 Ex London) Holter Lake Leaving Yellowstone behind we'll cross into the state of Montana and travel through mountains to the impressive Holter Lake, widely considered the most awe-inspiring of the upper Missouri Lakes. This popular recreation area has good options for walking and wildlife that we can enjoy this afternoon. The birdlife in this area is renowned, with sightings of Osprey, Heron and Eagles common. The location lends itself to leisurely walks around the shore of the lake (a popular area for fishing) and also, time permitting, in the surrounding hills. Our campsite tonight is relatively basic (no showers) but in a wonderful setting. Staying in this area allows us to break up an otherwise very long journey to Glacier. Today's driving time: approx. 5 hours. (B,L,D) Day 8 (Day 9 Ex London) Glacier N.P. After breaking camp, our journey through the mountains of Montana will continue as we head towards Glacier N.P. Once in the national park boundaries we'll travel to the area of West Glacier where we establish our camp for the next three nights. In the late afternoon we'll take a short walk to a sunset observation point before dinner (approx. 4km, 1.5 hours). collection of three lakes that border the national park. There should be some free-time on arrival in Seattle to explore the area downtown. Today's driving time: approx. 6 hours. (B,L) REVERSE ITINERARY Day 1 (Day 2 Ex London) Start Seattle; to Couer d'alene via Tubbs Hill. (Flight inclusive bookings will have arrived the night before) CH (B,L) Day 2 (Day 3 Ex London) To Glacier N.P PC (B,L,D) Day 3 (Day 4 Ex London) Glacier N.P. (B,L,D) Day 9 (Day 10 Ex London) Glacier N.P. After breakfast, we'll meet up with a Glacier N.P. wilderness guide and spend the day exploring the heart of the park using the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road. Due to the huge amount of snow that falls on this route, the road is usually only open from June to mid-october and gives the only vehicular access to the centre of the park. We'll take walks en route and our guide will help us try to spot some of the huge variety of animal species for which this park is famed. Due to its inaccessibility, towering cliffs and broad hidden forested valleys, the park still contains nearly all of its original endemic species in healthy populations, including Grizzly bear, wolverine and lynx. Big horn sheep, mountain goats, coyote and wolves are also common, the latter of which recolonised the park naturally in the 1980's. Today's total walking distance approx km. Today's driving time: approx. 2 hours. (B,L,D) Day 10 (Day 11 Ex London) Glacier N.P. Today we will discover more of the eastern side of Glacier N.P. There are dozens of trails to choose from, such as the St Mary Valley starting at the long lake of the same name exploring creeks, waterfalls, gorges and forests amongst the huge peaks, glaciers and wildlife. Alternatively walks to Iceberg Lake and Hidden Lake are possible. Leaders are not permitted to hike with the group in Glacier, but will prepare clients for all available options and tailor these to suit interests and abilities. Today's driving time: approx. 1.5 hours. (B,L,D) Day 11 (Day 12 Ex London) Couer d'alene We pack up camp this morning and leave Glacier behind to make our way towards Couer d'alene in the state of Idaho. En route we will stop at the historic mining town of Wallace, known as the 'Silver Capital of the World'. As we reach Couer d'alene, we'll take a short walk in the scenic area of Tubbs Hill for views of the impressive Couer d'alene Lake as well the marina and town. Today's driving time: approx. 7 hours. (B,L,D) Day 12 (Day 13 Ex London) Seattle Crossing into the state of Washington we make our way towards Seattle, our final destination. Today's journey takes us past the border of Mt Rainier National Park where the imposing Mount Rainier stands; at 4,392m this is Washington's highest volcano and one of the world's most dangerous! We'll make a lunch stop at Keechelus Lake, one of a 3 ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD This is a camping holiday, with the first night's accommodation in a hotel in Salt Lake City and the last night's accommodation in a hotel in Seattle. The hotels are of a good standard and in central locations. Rooms are on a twin share basis and all have private facilities. All other nights are in twin shared two-person tents, with all communal camping equipment, including self-inflating sleeping mats, provided. You will need to bring a sleeping bag (2 or 3 season). You are expected to erect and dismantle your own tent and help with breaking/setting up camp. Most campsites have flush toilets, tap water and hot showers, the latter often for a small fee (this is common in North America). The tour leader(s) will manage all the meals and do almost all of the cooking, but it is common and generally enjoyable for the group to get involved in some way. We try to book campsites within Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks themselves, but as there are very few group sites at these and they are vastly oversubscribed, this is not always possible. At these times, we use superior group sites that are convenient for access to the park. These offer better access to towns, shops and bars etc as well as having superior facilities. Whether staying in or out of the national parks, due to the vast sizes of the parks, we tend to drive to the sites and hiking start points. We suggest you allow about US$100 ( 70) for these additional meals. The food whilst camping is wholesome and North American style: breakfast usually consists of continental style fruits, breads, cereal, coffee and juice. Lunch is picnic or buffet style, with sandwiches, pita bread, sliced meat, cheeses and fruit. For snacks there are cookies,
health bars and other nibbles, and dinners are soup, salad, barbecued meat, rice and pasta dishes, vegetables and dessert. Single Accommodation: The single supplement on this trip applies only to hotel nights, with tents on request. Single tents are only available if we do not travel with a full group and in this case they will be organised on a first come first served basis. If you have paid the single supplement and would like to put your name down for a single tent please inform us as soon as possible after booking. TRANSPORT We travel in a 15-seater minivan with a trailer to enable access to a greater variety of roads and trails and to be as environmentally friendly as possible. When travelling with a full group this means that space inside the vehicle can be tight (especially when bringing daypacks into the vehicle) as all seats will be in use. This type of vehicle is the standard touring vehicle used by many tour operators in North America, and offers the best available option for a small group tour of this nature. The roads are mostly paved and in good condition. Due to the huge distances involved in traveling around the USA, and the fact that this trip covers 5 different states, we have several longer drives of around 6 hours. Journeys are broken up with scenic stops and meals. We also make shorter journeys each day to take us (and return from) some of the walks; these vary depending on campsite locations but could be up to 1-2 hours. WEATHER AND SEASONALITY UK Regional Flights The Flight Inclusive price is based on a London departure, but we are happy to tailor this to your local or regional airport. Please visit for a useful overview of the options available, and contact our sales team for expert advice. If booking regional flights other than with Exodus, you must allow a minimum connecting time (in addition to the international check in time) of 1 hour at Gatwick, and 1½ hours at Heathrow; this is longer than the official minimum, but baggage handling is known to be subject to delays. Airport Transfers Airport transfers are included for those on the group flights. Please note that transfers are not included for clients arriving on any other flight, even if Exodus has booked it. Those arriving from London on non-group flights should read the airport transfer section below for information on reaching the start point. Please check with the Exodus office. JOINING THE TRIP IN SALT LAKE CITY 12 days, normally start Salt Lake City Sun, end Seattle Thu If you are travelling on a Land Only basis and are booking your own flights please note that this is not a round tour. The tour starts in Salt Lake City and ends in Seattle or vice versa depending on the departure date. For Land Only clients, the tour begins at 07:30hrs on the morning of day 1 of the itinerary and ends at approximately 17:00hrs on day 12 of the itinerary, as such we recommend that you book flights to arrive the day before the tour starts, and to depart the day after the itinerary ends. We may be able to book pre and post tour accommodation for you at our start/end hotels should you wish - for further details please contact our Sales team. If you are planning to fly on the last day of the itinerary (day 12) please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00hrs as we can not guarantee that you will make it in time to catch your flight. Details of your start and end hotels will be confirmed within your final joining instructions which you will receive approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to your departure date. RESPONSIBLE TOURISM Tourism can be a real help to local communities, providing income, positive cultural exchanges and a financial incentive to protect their natural environment. Ours is a 'total approach' to responsible tourism, covering everything from the way we plan and operate our trips to the practices of Exodus as a company. Summer weather patterns in the Rockies are typically very sunny and dry. Daytime temperatures in the mountains range from 15-30ºC depending on elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and don't usually last long, although can be severe at altitude. Nights can be cool, depending on elevation. However, a storm system might bring cold and rain (even snow at altitude) at any time. Be prepared to adapt to a wide range of temperatures through layered clothing. July and August are the height of the wildflower bloom. Tours scheduled for June and early July might encounter some snow on the higher trails in all three of the national parks that we visit. When hiking we stick to marked trails to reduce our impact on the local environment and we camp in the designated grounds regulated by each National Park. We employ a 'leave no trace' policy throughout in regard to litter - everything taken into the park is taken out to preserve the local environment and we recycle wherever possible. Local shuttle services are used for transportation within the parks. JOINING THE TRIP IN THE UK 15 days, normally depart London Sat, return Sat Itinerary Start The group flight from London is an overnight flight departing the day before Day 1 of the itinerary. Flights from London We normally use the scheduled services of United Airlines or American Airlines (depending on availability). As flight timings and schedules change regularly we recommend you call one of our specialist sales staff or your agent to confirm up-to-date timings. Please note timings may change at a later date and cannot be confirmed until approximately two weeks before departure. 4
We also support conservation of the wilderness areas visited by employing specialist local guides in the fields of geology, wilderness and wildlife to accompany us at different stages of the trek. This channels money back into the local economy and at the same time increases our understanding of the environment that we are visiting and its local flora and fauna. With a small group size of 12, we hope to reduce the environmental impacts of visiting remote areas. For full details of our Responsible Tourism Policy please visit: PRACTICAL INFORMATION Passports and Visas All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid beyond the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary, in accordance with the regulations of the country you are to visit. The information offered below is to help you with that process. We are not responsible for the actions of local immigration and customs officials, whether at points of entry or otherwise, and any subsequent effects. British, New Zealand, Swiss and most EU passport holders do not need a visa (and enter the country under the Visa Waiver Program), provided they are in possession of an onward air ticket when entering the USA. Visas for the USA are required by some nationalities, including South African, Greek and Portuguese passport holders. All passengers travelling to and from the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are required to hold a machine-readable passport (MRP). A MRP has the holder's personal details, e.g. name, date of birth, nationality and their passport number contained in two lines of text at the base of the photo page. This text may be read by machine. The US now charges $14 for the visa waiver program and must be paid by credit card. The US authorities have introduced a mandatory requirement for all passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme to register for an Electronic Travel Authority. For additional specifics about the VWP please consult the VWP information on the U.S. Embassy London website. More information and all necessary Internet links can be found at Visa regulations can change without notice: please check the current regulations in good time to obtain a visa if one is required. Insurance - are you adequately covered? You must have adequate travel insurance, and if you are joining a trip which goes to high altitude, you must check that you are covered up to the maximum altitude of the trip. If you are resident in the UK we strongly recommend Exodus travel insurance, which is specifically designed to cover all activities on your trip. If you are a UK citizen and travelling in Europe you should obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your Post Office. This gives free medical care in many European countries, but should not be considered a substitute for adequate insurance. Legal Note: all group members joining this tour will be asked to sign a liability waiver at the start of the holiday Customer s Acknowledgement of Risk. This document limits the liability of our main supplier and is standard practice in the United States and on all their tours. As a client of Exodus Travels Ltd, your rights under the Package Travel Regulations (1992) are unaffected, and Exodus remains liable for the actions of our sub-contractors. A copy of this document is available from Exodus if required. Local Time GMT -7 Electricity 110 V twin pin US style sockets are widely available. Group, Staff and Support The group will generally be between 5 and 12 people. There will be a local leader and drivers and local guides where needed. For groups of up to nine clients, one tour leader will accompany the group, whilst for larger groups there will be two leaders with the group. We use different local specialist guides in the national parks and they will lead the group during the daytime on the days described in the itinerary. The minimum age of clients on this trip is 16 years. Please note that anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by (and share accommodation with) a parent or legal guardian. MONEY MATTERS Currency Information The national currency of USA is the US Dollar (USD), with an exchange rate of 1.6 to the UK. Exchange rates are correct at the time of publication. You should bring all of your funds in US$ or arrange for use of your bank card in the US, as outside major towns you will have difficulty changing money. We strongly recommend informing your bank of your trip shortly prior to travel to reduce the chance that they don't block your card whilst you are abroad. ATM availability/credit Card Acceptance/Travellers cheques Credit cards (MasterCard and Visa) are widely accepted in restaurants, shops etc and ATMs are widely available in the USA. Extra Expenses and Spending Money There are no other essential extra expenses other than those mentioned under the 'Food' section in the Trip Notes. There is no airport departure tax in the USA, as this is already included in your air ticket. Vaccinations and Health Travel health can often be something people forget about before going away, but a little preparation and knowledge can go a long way to help you stay fit and healthy while abroad. There are no specific health risks on this trip. The above information can change at short notice; as we are not qualified to answer all your questions about travel health we strongly recommend you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic at least 8 weeks prior to departure for up-to-date information. We suggest you allow an average of US$10 per day for personal expenses like drinks, postcards, stamps, small souvenirs, laundry etc. Entrance fees to all national parks, which are part of the itinerary, are included in the tour cost. Tipping (leader and local staff) Although entirely at your discretion, it is customary in the US to show appreciation to the guide by giving a tip at the end of the tour. Allowing $3-5 per day each will be more than adequate. Please note when eating group meals a tip of approximately 20% is automatically added by American restaurants to all bills. 5
For the specialist guides on this trip, we recommend that a tip of about US$10 per day from each client is appropriate, if you enjoyed their services.
