1 st Annual PRESENTED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN SHARK CONSERVANCY in association with the Hermanus FynArts
ABOUT The was conceived by the South African Shark Conservancy (SASC ) to celebrate World Oceans Day. It showcases underwater filmmaking talent and emphasizes marine conservation concerns and success stories on a regional and global scale World Oceans Day & the Film Festival The oceans cover about 70% of Earth s surface. They generate 80% of the oxygen we breathe, provide bountiful food for billions of people and regulate our climate. Not only do the oceans give us the resources we need to survive on a daily basis, but they have also been a source of spiritual and cultural inspiration since the dawn of man. Despite our indisputable connection to the oceans, however, it is increasingly obvious these systems are under threat and humans are to blame. World Oceans Day, celebrated each year on June 8 th, is officially recognised by the United Nations as the day on which we can all demonstrate our solidarity for the conservation of our Blue Planet by taking action and making our voices heard. It is the day where we celebrate and honour the oceans as one. As part of our commitment to conserving the oceans, SASC will be making each and every World Oceans Day one of unique celebration and awarenessraising through a fun, educational and entertaining film festival with a difference: the. is not a commercial event. Rather, the festival aims to raise public awareness about issues facing the oceans today and provide them with the tools to make a tangible difference. DATE: 8 & 9 th June 2013 VENUE: The Whale House Museum, Hermanus Entrance to is free.
Saturday 8 th June 11:00 12:00 l Oceans Of Contrast (54 min) Produced by: Jaco Loubser (Homebrew Films) Exploring the 3000km of coastline stretching from the Mozambique border to Namibia, this documentary showcases unique underwater and superb aerial cinematography in tribute to the unique marine heritage of South and southern Africa. 12:05 12:10 l A return to the Sea (4 min) Lauren de Vos & Otto Whitehead As conservationists, our greatest hope is to inspire change. A change in perspective. A change in attitude. A change in consciousness. Before we ever anticipate achieving that, a first step is to inspire a sense of wonderment in the beauty and diversity that is our wilderness heritage. 12:10 12:15 l Everyday Wilderness (5 min) Lauren de Vos & Otto Whitehead False Bay, as South Africa's largest true bay, is an oceanic icon that lies between Cape Hangklip and Cape Point. Using underwater cameras for conservation and exploration, scientists have spent the past year getting to know this bay anew. Dipping below that great, blue expanse has opened our eyes to the wealth of marine life that also calls this region home. In recognition of the splendour that is False Bay. 12:15 12:45 l Oceans at the tipping point (30 min) Produced by: Wynette Yao; Narrated by: Harrison Ford How do we really know what impact we're having on one of our most precious resources? The award winning Oceans at the Tipping Point is a half hour broadcast show introducing an innovative new tool for measuring the health of the oceans, the Ocean Health Index. For the first time, "sustainability" and human use is integrated into all assessments, and complex factors are boiled down into hard data and real numbers. How are the world's oceans doing? Saturday programme continued
Saturday 8 th June 13:00 13:20 l Life on the Rocks (15 min) Produced by The Sustainable Seas Trust Nosethi, was once amongst many from her community who poached abalone and harvested mussels as a means of survival. Nosethi was able to learn new skills that took her away from this difficult life. This film touches on the delicate line between the importance of coastal conservation, and seeing to the needs of many rural communities which rely on harvesting mussels for survival. 13:25 13:40 l Counting on Crayfish (15 min) Produced by The Sustainable Seas Trust Counting on crayfish delves into the challenging lifestyles of crayfish divers, whose livelihood depends on the few crayfish they are able to sell to tourists in the backpackers and cottages. The film takes you through the life of a diver, Five, who has to make ends meet by diving for crayfish, often in dangerous conditions, to be able to put food on the table and send money to his son. 13:45 14:15 l Silver of the Sea (30 min) Are Pilskog (Havets Solv) In the rough sea off the west coast of Norway, giant herring shoal several kilometres long and migrate one thousand kilometres. In The Silver of the Sea a local biologist and filmmaker sets out on a journey into the deep to expose this drama. As he follows the destiny of a young puffin chick, whose life is critical to the timing of young herring, the film tells the story of how even the greatest ecosystems of our planet may be vulnerable. 14:20 14:40 l Trapped between conservation and culture(20 min) Produced by: Mark Dixon & Amanda Judson A glimpse at cultural fish trapping in the Kosi Bay coastal lakes. Representing indigenous fishing methods spanning 700 years, the Kosi Bay Fish Traps are the oldest existing cultural fishing in South Africa. Constructed in three of the four lakes of the Kosi Bay Wetlands, the traps are passed down from father to son and represent an ancient form of subsistence fishing that has for centuries maintained a sustainable balance. Saturday programme continued
Saturday 8 th June 14:45 14:50 l Nightingale (5 min) Otto Whitehead Tristan Da Cunha is the remotest inhabited island on the planet. Just 38km south-east of this island lies the small, wild and uninhabited island of Nightingale. As with many remote sub-antarctic islands Nightingale is home to thousands of birds. My life as a scientist has taken me to some incredible places that I thought I'd only ever be able to experience through BBC Nature documentaries. These are the places that fuel my desire and passion for film and thus it is the most natural feeling in the world for me to wander through these utopian landscapes with camera in hand. These are some visuals from my trip to Nightingale Island in :50 15:00 l White shark tracking in Gansbaai (10 min) Dyer Island Conservation Trust Join the Dyer Island Conservation Trust's marine biologists as they explain the step by step process of manually tagging and tracking great white sharks. 15:00-15:30 l Shark Spotters (30 min) Alison Kock (Shark Spotters) The Shark Spotting Programme is the only programme of its kind in the world. It attempts to balance the needs of both people and white shark conservation by proactively reducing the interaction and conflict between recreational water users and sharks. 15:30 16:30 l Surfing and Sharks (60 min) Director: Julia Watson This award winning documentary goes up close with Pro Surfers Lungani, Andrew and Avuyile, their family s traditions and tribulations along side a hand selected group of the best shark experts from the region to uncover the real secrets and stories that surround the shark stigma that exists in South Africa. Saturday programme continued
Saturday 8 th June FEATURE FILM FOR PANEL DISCUSSION 17:00 18:30 l Planet Ocean Directors: Yann Arthus-Betrand & Michael Pitiot Can we imagine a film that would change the way people look at the ocean? Can we explain simply, to everyone, the greatest natural mystery of our planet? And lastly, can we help our children believe in a better and more sustainable world tomorrow? The multi- award winning Planet Ocean narrates the most marvellous and also the most terrifying human experiences of our time. Filmed in extreme geographical conditions all over the globe, it describes the modern Odyssey of people who go out to discover their blue planet. 18:30 19:30 l PANEL DISCUSSION Specialist Scientist & Conservationist Discussion Panel: Eleanor Yeld Hutchings (WWF) Colin Attwood (University of Cape Town) Claudio Velasquez (Homebrew Films) Chris Mason (Natural History Unit Africa/Wild Talk Africa) Pierre de Villiers (CapeNature) Sunday programme overleaf
Sunday 9 th June 11:00 12:40 l The Island President (100 min) Director/Cinematographer: John Shenk Jon Shenk s award winning The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced the literal survival of his country and everyone on it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after 30 years of despotic rule, Nasheed is faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level will submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. 12:40 13:40 l Shiver: Shark finning in Mozambique (60 min) Aaron Gekoski; Carlos Macuacua Shiver tells the story of the global shark finning crisis and the ramifications for Mozambique, its people and its marine resources. In the Indian Ocean, as elsewhere in the world, shark fishing has been increasing at an alarming rate with tens of millions being caught each year worldwide. The team follows Mozambican hero Carlos Macuacua as he becomes the first person to dive deep into Mozambique s brutal and shocking world of shark finning. 13:45 13:45 l White shark tracking in Gansbaai (10 min) Dyer Island Conservation Trust Join the Dyer Island Conservation Trust's marine biologists as they explain the step by step process of manually tagging and tracking great white sharks. 13:45 14:15 l Shark Spotters (30 min) Alison Kock (Shark Spotters) The Shark Spotting Programme is the only programme of its kind in the world. It attempts to balance the needs of both people and white shark conservation by proactively reducing the interaction and conflict between recreational water users and sharks.
