TRIP AT A GLANCE Dates: Sep 1-8, 2018 Location: Laramie, Wyoming Cost: $2770 Activities: Riding Arrive: anytime September 1 at the hotel near the Denver airport Depart: at 1 pm on September 8 at the Denver airport TRIP OVERVIEW Tucked away high up near Wyoming's Snowy Mountains is VeeBar Ranch, an historic dude ranch. The ranch is a place of peace and quiet, a retreat that combines time in the outdoors with comfortable lodging and hearty meals at night, away from cell phones. The air is crisp and invigorating, and you find yourself relaxing within minutes of your arrival. You can choose to be busy all day, going for long rides, learning or improving your fly fishing, hiking in this spectacular rugged land, and joining in every activity we offer. Or you can decide to put your feet up on the front porch and read a good book, in between soaking in the hot tub. Or you might sometimes choose one and sometimes the other. All these are possible- it's completely up to you. Maximum group size: 16 RATING We have rated this trip as 1, 2, or 3 because of the wide variety of options available every day. You might choose half-day horseback rides with afternoons spent reading a book or soaking in the hot tub; or you might ride as much as possible each day with fishing and hiking taking up the rest of your time. The level of activity is up to you. For trips that are rated 2, participants should be walking regularly at a brisk pace 3 to 4 days a week for minutes prior to trip beginning. Rating: 1 [2] WHAT'S INCLUDED Seven nights lodging (all in single rooms except for the first night) All meals from breakfast the first Sunday through breakfast the last Saturday, except for one lunch Round trip transportation from the Denver, CO (DEN) airport All activities on the itinerary An Adventures in Good Company guide Customary gratuities (15%) and taxes (6%) for ranch and staff Not included: Travel to and from Denver, dinner 1 st night in Denver, alcoholic beverages (can be purchased at the ranch), one lunch, guide gratuities, and travel insurance
OUR ITINERARY Below is the proposed itinerary for the trip. As is true on any adventure travel trip, plans for any specific day may be modified due to weather considerations, unforeseen circumstances, new opportunities, and group interests. DAY 1 SEPTEMBER 1, SATURDAY Arrive anytime today at the Denver airport. We'll be staying at a nearby hotel with an airport shuttle so you can arrive whenever it's convenient. Our first formal get together will be tomorrow. DAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2, SUNDAY We'll meet each other Sunday morning for breakfast and to start getting acquainted. We'll then get on our private shuttle for the 3 hour drive up to Laramie, stopping along the way for lunch (not included) and the opportunity to visit a 'cowgirl' store where you can purchase western wear, boots, hats and any 'forgotten' items as well as those 'mush have' ones! We'll get to the ranch about 2:30 and will have time to settle in, before meeting with our host for the week. We'll learn about the history of the ranch (it's third generation) and then get a tour of the ranch and buildings. Obviously knowing where the hot tub is located will be of prime importance! We'll then enjoy the first of many hearty and delicious dinners, home-cooked from scratch and served buffet style. Our western or gourmet meals are supplemented with fresh salads, fruit, homemade breads, pastries, and desserts at every meal. Obviously if we're going to eat like ranch hands, we'll need to exercise like them! After dinner we'll meet for an orientation to the ranch and our activities for the week. DAY 3-7 SEPTEMBER 3 - SEPTEMBER 7 We'll start our week with a "Meet and Greet" - with our horses for the week! We'll learn a little about how horses think and how we can out-think them, setting our week-long relationship on firm footing. We'll get our saddles fitted, learn trail etiquette, and receive some riding instruction that will stand us in good stead whether you're new to riding or an experienced rider. After this introduction, most of the rest of our rides will be based on experience level and everyone will have the chance to improve her riding skills. Each day will be full of riding, fishing, hiking - and relaxing. Every evening we'll review our options for the next day and everyone can choose what sounds good to her. There will be lots of flexibility each day.
DAY 3-7 SEPTEMBER 3 - SEPTEMBER 7 (CONTINUED) Horseback riding is one of the main delights here. The horses are well cared for and well trained. You will be matched to a horse at the beginning of the week that is appropriate for your experience level, and you will have the chance to improve your riding skills over time. We'll split into groups based on experience; nose-to-tail rides are minimized and loping rides are available for those who are interested. The terrain varies greatly: at the beginning of the week we'll leave directly from the ranch, ride through lush meadows in the river bottom and up onto high plateaus. Later in the week we'll head for more mountainous country. There will be morning and afternoon rides offered each day and at least one day we'll have the option for an all-day ride up in the mountains. All rides are adapted to any level of experience. In addition to trail riding, once we are comfortable with our horses we'll get to try team penning, learning how to get cattle to go where we want. The Vee Bar's horses are turned out to pasture each night and rounded up each morning. If you want to meet the wranglers at the barn in the morning to help groom and saddle your horse, and/or help unsaddle and turn horses out, you are most welcome to. And you are equally welcome to leave your horse with your wrangler and go back to your cabin for a hot shower. There will be also optional activities each day for those who choose not to ride or only ride half the day. The Little Laramie River flows right through the ranch and is perfect for fly fishing, and there is also a stocked pond which is ideal for learning. Those who are interested can attend a demonstration from a local guide who will teach the basics and cover topics such as techniques, equipment, flies, and fish. And those who are really interested in improving their skills or going for guided expeditions can hire him- he's always on call. For those who want to do some hiking, the nearby Snowy Mountains offer a variety of well-marked trails. And for those who want to relax, you can go for a quiet walk on ranch property, read your book while listening to the river, soak in the hot tub, and take naps. Other activities to look forward to include horse drawn buggy rides, happy hour with live music, outdoor barbecues, evening campfires, roasting marshmallows (yes!) and singing wranglers! After a full day of activity, we'll gather for a relaxing drink at the John Wayne Saloon or in the lodge in front of the large river rock fireplace. We'll enjoy a delicious hearty dinner, served buffet style. Our meals are cooked from scratch and supplemented with fresh salads, fruit, homemade breads, pastries and desserts at every meal. And before going to bed, you can sit outside in the hot tub, soak well-used muscles, and gaze up at the stars that may be brighter than any you've ever seen. At night, snuggle into your comfortable bed and listen to the sounds of the night.
DAY 8 SEPTEMBER 8, SATURDAY The week is over way too quickly! We'll pack up this morning, eat our last breakfast, and then get a shuttle back to the Denver airport. We'll be back by 1:00 PM and you can plan to fly out any time after 2:30. ADDITIONAL TRIP INFORMATION GETTING THERE If you would like help with any travel plans, we recommend our travel agent Barbara Phillip. You can reach barbara@scaneastwest.com or call (206) ACCOMMODATIONS There are two cabins and six 2-bedroom Riverside Suites; everyone will get her own bedroom and share a bathroom. The suites are located on the banks of the Little Laramie River, with a porch that invites you to sit and relax while you watch the river go by. The cabins are more secluded and have a somewhat different layout. Both are described here. Food at the Vee Bar is typical ranch food simple and nutritious. Vegetarian (and vegan) options for this trip will be limited and not a lot of variety. If you are concerned about having enough protein during your trip, please plan to bring some plant-based protein sources such as nut butter, instant dried hummus, or high-protein energy bars. If you cannot eat gluten or if you have other dietary restrictions, please be sure to note your dietary preferences/restrictions on your registration so we can make sure the Vee Bar can plan accordingly. Depending on your restrictions, it may be recommended you bring some supplemental food with you. WEATHER The Laramie, Wyoming area has a humid continental climate with warm summers and no dry season. Historically during the 1st week of September there is a chance of rain in the area so don t forget the rain gear. The ranch also provides beautiful, bright yellow slickers to wear over your rain gear when riding. Makes for really cool pictures! Temperatures for the area are typically highs in the low seventies and lows in the low to mid-forties. TRAVEL INSURANCE WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND TRIP CANCELLATION/TRIP INTERRUPTION INSURANCE, WHICH COVERS YOUR COST IF YOU NEED TO CANCEL OR INTERRUPT YOUR TRIP for medical reasons, trip delay, lost baggage, and other unforeseen emergencies. Adventures in Good Company will send you information about travel insurance with your registration information, or you may purchase coverage through your own insurance company. In order to avoid disappointment and expense in the event that you must cancel your trip we strongly urge you to purchase some type of insurance coverage. You can also sign up for it online at Travelex Insurance. To get the best rates, use as your location number on the Get A Quote page.

If you choose to bring one, please have a correctly fitted horseback riding (not bicycle) helmet. The ranch also has helmets for your use
NOTES ON PACKING Daypacks: Since this trip is all about the riding, the hike offered will be optional. For this reason, we suggest that you bring whatever size backpack you can comfortably fit all the items you will need for the hiking option. You will need to carry the following: water (1 liter), snacks, rain gear, warm layer, hat, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera, lip balm and any other personal items you like to have with you. Before you leave home check to be sure that it is comfortable to wear and has sufficient space for all of your items. Note: For riding saddlebags will be attached to the saddles for your items, you will not wear a backpack while riding Footwear: For riding, the VeeBar ranch requires you to wear proper riding (cowgirl) boots. If you do not own a pair or wish to purchase a pair, the VeeBar does have boots to use. Please note, the boots for use are well worn and exact fit cannot be expected. For the scheduled hike, well-fitting, sturdy boots or trail shoes are needed. For the planned hike, lightweight or midweight cordura or leather boots with a Vibram sole work well. If you have weak ankles or are recovering from an ankle injury, get boots that come above the ankle you ll find that this will give you more support in uneven or slippery terrain. Remember to waterproof your boots before the trip. Even boots billed as waterproof need to be treated with a waterproofing product. Clothing: For the Cowgirl trip, jeans are the preferred pant. Cotton shirts are also good for riding. If you are planning on doing the hike, please bring 1 synthetic t-shirt to hike in. If you are planning on fly-fishing or other nonriding ranch activities, we recommend 1 synthetic pair that can be rinsed out and dry quickly. Rain Gear: You will need a parka or jacket made of a coated nylon or a waterproof/breathable fabric like Gore-tex, HellyTech, Membrane, H2No, or Ultrex. Be sure it keeps water out. Before making this important purchase, be sure that it fits you properly. It should be large enough to fit over all your layers. In particular, the hood needs to be effective. It should shield your face from the rain and turn with your head. Movement of your arms must not interfere with the hood. Put on your daypack; can you still raise your arms? Your wind/rain pants should be comfortable, allow enough room for your layers, and permit free movement of your legs (for example, can you crouch comfortably?). Partial or full-length leg zippers are useful for easily putting your pants on over your boots. NOTE: The Ranch provides slickers --- they are a beautiful, sunny yellow and look great in pictures! These slickers are designed to be worn over your rain jacket/parka and rain pants Hydration: Please bring either regular 1-liter water bottles or the collapsible water bottles to use when riding. These bottles fit easily into the saddle bags provided. You cannot wear a backpack while riding so do not plan on using your hydration system when riding. Personal First Aid Kit: Bring a small first aid kit with familiar medicine and first aid supplies you might need. Recommendations include the following: blister or foot remedies like moleskin, Compeed, blister bandages, or similar, a small role of duct tape (always useful!), remedies for respiratory ailments, stomach ailments, sore muscles or joints. The guides will have a first aid kit but having what you know works well for you is a good idea.
