7 Build a Solar ven Summer Science xperiment We re going to build a very easy solar oven to cook delicious snacks! Take your solar oven on a picnic or camping trip, and use the sun's energy to make tasty s mores. Pretty cool! ow to build an oven: ur oven is like a super-greenhouse. t traps some of the sun s energy to make the air inside the box really hot. But be careful, it can heat up to 200 degrees! You will need: Cardboard box with attached lid (a pizza box or a toy box, for example). Box should be at least 7-8cm deep. Box knife or scissors (with adult help!) luminium foil Clear plastic wrap Glue stick Clear tape Stick to prop open reflector flap (a skewer or ruler, for example). 1. sk an adult to help you cut a threesided flap out of the top of the box, using a box knife or scissors. Leave about a 3cm border around the three sides. 2. Cover the bottom (inside) of the flap with aluminium foil. Spread a coat of glue on to the cardboard and make the foil as smooth as possible.

8 3. Line the inside of the box with aluminium foil, again glueing it down and making it as smooth as possible. 4. nsulate your oven with newspaper, so it holds in more heat. oll up sheets of newspaper and tape them to the bottom of the box, around its borders. Now You're Cooking! To make s mores, you will need: Crackers Marshmallows Plain chocolate bars luminium or paper pie dish Place a few crackers, with a marshmallow on each, in the pie dish. Place the dish in the preheated solar oven. Prop up the flap to reflect the sunlight into the box. 5. Tape two layers of plastic wrap across the opening you cut one layer on the top and one layer on the bottom side of the opening. Wait for the marshmallows to get squishy. Depending on how hot the day is, it might take 30 to 60 minutes. Then, open the oven lid and place a piece of chocolate on top of each marshmallow, and another cracker on top of the chocolate. Press down gently to squash the marshmallow. 6. Test the stick you will use to prop the lid up. You may have to use tape or figure out another way to make the stick stay put. 7. Set the oven in the direct sun, with the flap propped open to reflect the light into the box. The best hours to set up your solar oven are from 11am to 3pm, when the sun is overhead. Preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes. Close the lid of the solar oven and let the sun heat it up for a few minutes more to melt the chocolate. njoy!
