Community Liaison Group Why? Improve communications with our neighbours and the local community Help local residents, businesses, community groups and Deputies gain an in-depth understanding of the activities at Guernsey Electricity. Discuss operational activities such as noise, vibrations, emissions and safety.
What is Guernsey Electricity Limited? Vertically integrated electricity supply company Serves a small island population circa 60,000 with approximately 30,000 customers Key statistics; 55m Turnover business; 85MW maximum demand; 400 GWh total units; 210 FTE employees Commercialised but 100% owned by the States of Guernsey Business model - One power station, one subsea cable to Europe; one network; one HQ Economies of Scale location and size of market
Our mandate Energy Resource Plan objective 1: to maintain the safety and security of affordable and sustainable energy supplies. We will invest, through Guernsey Electricity, to improve the resilience of our imports of electricity from the Continent by ensuring a second cable of greater capacity than the existing cable from Guernsey to either Jersey or France is completed by the end of the decade. We will amend the current States n-2 security of supply policy to enable further infrastructure investment, such as cables from Guernsey, to be made economically. Early history 1900 - Guernsey Electric Light and Power Company Ltd supply the first electricity to Guernsey from Les Amballes power station 1900 - First complaint received 1903 - Vale Power Station built 1933 States of Guernsey take control
1970s -1980s 1970 B Station opened at Vale Power Station 1973 Gas turbine engine (GT1) commissioned 1979 C Station built and engine 1C commissioned 1980 Engine 2C commissioned 1982 Engine 3C commissioned 1987 Engine 4C commissioned 1981 Jersey start undersea cable to France
1990s Today 1994 D Station completed and Engine 1D commissioned 1996 Gas turbine GT2 commissioned 1997 Gas turbine GT3 commissioned 2000 Guernsey-Jersey (GJ1) Cable commissioned April 2012 Guernsey-Jersey (GJ1) Cable fails and is repaired. 2013 Engine 2D is installed in D Station 2014 Normandie 3 (N3) commissioned
The CIEG The joint company set up in 1998 between Guernsey Electricity and Jersey Electricity to operate and manage the submarine cables between Europe and the Channel Islands. Provides both Guernsey and Jersey with greater security and better affordability. Long term agreements with Electricité de France ensure the imported electricity is low carbon. Co-operating through the CIEG (Ltd), means the islands can work together towards improving the reliability of the grid system.
