ENGL-3 NuckolsFarmES_The People of Ancient Greece [Exam ID:07L13F] Scan Number:10044 Read the following passage and answer questions 1 through 19. The People of Ancient Greece 1 Greece is a land of natural beauty. It has many tall mountains that rise high into the sky. It also has lush green islands that extend into the sea. But Greece is more than just a beautiful location. It is also one of the world s oldest and most important places. 2 The leaders in Greece were powerful. Greece once ruled over lands as far south as Egypt and as far east as India. The people of ancient Greece were very advanced for their time. They had many great ideas that we still use today. 3 Athens was the most important city in Greece. The people of Athens voted to make their own rules and laws. This is known as democracy. Our government in the United States is also based on democracy, but there are some differences. Democracy was not perfect in Greece. Women and slaves could not vote. Today we believe that every person should have a vote. 4 The people of ancient Greece took great pride in their art. The Greeks were the first to use columns in their buildings. The most famous building was known as the Parthenon. Its columns were made of bright white stones. The building sat on a hill near the city of Athens. It was built as a temple and housed many sculptures. People still visit this temple. They are amazed that the building was created so long ago. 5 The people of ancient Greece also loved sports. The most popular sport was wrestling. The people also enjoyed running and horse racing. They held many contests. The best athletes from all over Greece competed against each

other. These games became known as the Olympic Games.
