Reading 2 Sea animals This is an extract from a science report about different sea animals. Read it twice and answer the questions. DEFINITIONS Source: origin; where something comes from. Jaws: the mouth (especially of an animal). Giant Squid Great White Shark Plankton are tiny fish and plants; some are so small that are hard to see. Plankton are important in the ocean's food chain. They are the most important source of food for almost all fish larvae. Basking sharks and blue whales feed on them directly; other large fish feed on them indirectly, by eating fish of smaller size. Giant squids have never been caught alive, so we know very little about them. They can be 17 metres long and are the largest animals without bones. Great white sharks are very strong and can kill humans. They can be 6 metres long, which is smaller than some sharks. They usually live in warm seas and eat other fish and seals. They have very strong jaws. The whale shark is enormous, sometimes more than 18 metres long. It is not dangerous: it only eats plankton. The basking shark is another shark that only eats plankton. It can be 15 metres long. Sharks are not as dangerous as many people think. 8

Reading 3 My first part-time job In this part of the exam you need to fill in some gaps. Read the text below and choose the correct word for each blank from the choices given. Folding clothing When I was 16 years-old, I had my first part-time job. Apart from my studies, I worked about 15 hours week. Why did I do it? was the reason. I needed it to pay for my studies. Although it happened a decade, this job is one which I will remember forever. It remains in my memory after all years because it taught me how to organize my time as a student in high school and as an employee in a clothes shop. That means, I had school in the daytime and work in the. It was important because I how to better organize my timetable. Most part-time jobs are not particularly exciting or. People do them because they just need to save up to go to university or to buy a car. I worked a common teenager job at a popular American clothing store by the name of Old Navy. I loved there and knew I would love working there just as much. I was lucky in that sense, as I really enjoyed my job. Before I started there, I had to do training for a week to learn how to do the job. I had many tasks as a clothes shop worker. of them included things like folding clothing and controlling the dressing room. They gave me smaller tasks like welcoming customers. All the employees had a 25% discount off the clothes in the store. This was a great way for the company to keep its team of workers and excited! I bought lots of things there. I still have some of the clothes I bought from Old Navy, always reminding me of my first job. 12
