Tasmania by Rail, Road and River With Chris Harding 7 th 18 th March 2019 LAUNCESTON CRADLE MOUNTAIN STRAHAN TARRALEAH HOBART

OVERVIEW There s something magical about Tasmania. Its wild, unspoiled natural beauty, its quirky and stimulating art scene, its living history not to mention its small but extraordinary collection of railway journeys form the inspiration for this tour around Australia s holiday state. In Autumn, it s even more spectacular. With the changing colours, wine harvests, long days and mild temperatures, it s the perfect backdrop for many interesting excursions on this tour, including a special day at the award-winning Sheffield SteamFest Tasmania s premier fair showcasing the best of the state s industrial and colonial heritage. With such a variety of experiences within easy reach, Tasmania is great for travelling. Our tour, circumnavigating the island, brings together a wonderful collection of iconic sights, scenery and interesting encounters. Imagine yourself riding in the balcony coach of a hard-working steam train up the wild West Coast mountains, soaking up the wonders of modern art at world-famous MONA gallery, sipping whisky in the atmosphere of a stone-clad distillery, or revelling in the sublime beauty of Cradle Mountain Lake. Along the way, you ll enjoy the hospitality of warm and welcoming locals, gourmet foods and wines, quality accommodation and unique side trips on rail, road and river. All of this in the company of your experienced and knowledgeable host, who ll share with you the unique flavours and bring to life the stories of this fascinating island. HIGHLIGHTS Spend a full day at the iconic and colourful Sheffield SteamFest Ride the West Coast Wilderness Railway from Strahan to Queenstown, enjoying a feast, including champagne and local wines, in the train s charming restaurant balcony car Take a special excursion by ferry to the MONA gallery in the Posh Pit Visit multiple distilleries, wineries, museums and markets, as well as nature tours and walks Savour a special gala welcome dinner at the legendary Stillwater restaurant in Launceston Visit Cradle Mountain and explore its beautiful surrounds Sail in comfort around Macquarie Harbour and up the pristine Gordon River MONA on the Derwent River MEET YOUR TOUR LEADER CHRIS HARDING Chris is President of the Australian Railway Historical Society, NSW Division. Chris fell under the spell of rail as a child, when he would walk from his home in the Sydney suburb of Belmore to watch trains in action at the Enfield Railway Yards then home to over 300 steam locomotives. Although sidetracked by a high-flying career in the banking industry, Chris continued have an active interest in railway history as a tour guide and office bearer at the NSW Rail Transport Museum, Thirlmere. After leaving the banking world, Chris had the opportunity to pursue his passion full-time first working for 3801 Limited, the operating company of the famous steam locomotive 3801, and later managing the ARHS Railway Bookshop at Sydney s Central Station. He also became a popular media contact for commentary on historic and current railway events, frequently appearing on talkback radio and television programs. Although retired, Chris still enjoys working with his mate and founder of Railway Adventures, Scott McGregor, hosting many railway adventures in Australia and Europe, including the always-popular Switzerland tour and the extensive tour of Japan in Autumn.
