MAPS & ITINERARIES National Parks, Monuments & Peaks in Colorado Overview Designed to tackle the key wonders of Colorado, this itinerary is for outdoor and road trip lovers looking for a route that incorporates big landscapes, including mountains, lakes, rivers, and canyons as well as a bit of history. Colorado s national parks and monuments are incredibly inspiring, and are often remarked as some of the most stunning in the US. This route covers the four most iconic national parks in colorful Colorado, including Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon National Park, Mesa Verde National Historic Park, The Great Sand Dunes National Park, as well as the famous Colorado National Monument and the iconic 14er, Mount Evans. Starting in Denver, you ll drive north, up to the small city of Loveland. From Loveland, you ll head west, through a phenomenally beautiful canyon, into Rocky Mountain National Park, via Estes Park. Meander through the park and make your way to Grand Lake - a beautiful, rustic town nestled in the Rockies. You could camp here, or find lodging, if you want to break your journey up. #MYUSAPARKS Prepared by: Harry W States: CO Start/End: Denver Total miles: 1,260 Suggested days: 8-14 Type: scenic high-altitude road trip, including Old West-style scenery, and world class national parks Recommended for: road trippers, motorcycles, honeymooners, families Suggested season: May - October GET IN TOUCH: +1 303 506 8754 > florian@hms-global.com > visitusaparks.com

After Grand Lake, it s time to head south to a warmer climate to Mount Evans (it s cold at the top). Make your way here via Idaho Springs, and push to the top of the pass. Though a detour, it s well worth it, and you ll see why. We suggest heading there at the beginning or end of the day, as with all locations, to get the best light, and potentially the best visuals. You ll be coming off the mountain the same way you got up, and that ll put you back in Idaho springs, which sets you on course for the next hidden gem we re going to reveal to you Guanella Pass. Guanella Pass is a place our lead photographer has visited religiously. In his words, it s one of the greatest pass drives in central US and we think his shots prove this. After taking a trip over Guanella Pass, you ll end up in Grants. From there, drive up to Kenosha Pass. Don t forget to stop at the Kenosha Pass overlook a best view in CO contender. After taking in the vast scenes at Kenosha Pass, you ll want to head down into and through South Park Heritage Area. South Park is stunning, and you ll thoroughly enjoy taking in it s desolate, unending beauty stop at Pony Espresso, in Jefferson, on your way (potentially the best espresso in Colorado). As you head west on US Highway 285, you ll see a lot of great things, and it s only going to get better. Once you reach the town of Poncha Springs, having meandered south from Buena Vista, make your way up and over the iconic mountain pass Monarch Pass. Monarch Pass is stunning, to say at the least, but the real deal lies a couple more hours west the Black Canyon of Gunnison. The Black Canyon is an incredibly special geographic feature, and you ll see why. The strata of the canyon can be seen with incredible definition, and you ll be utterly blown away by the depth of it. Accommodation-wise, you might like to stick in Montrose for a night a nearby town with plenty of places to grab a quick bite, and stay a night. Alas, the Black Canyon must now become another chapter in your epic road trip. It s time to head south, to Mesa Verde National Park. Mesa Verde National Park is the only park in the US designated purely because of its historic value. It s no surprise the park offers visitors insight into Native American Puebloan Culture potentially unparalleled in depth and quality. Whilst there, you might also like to augment your stay with a visit to Hovenweep National Monument another incredibly well-preserved Puebloan site and Anastasi Heritage Center (a museum with an array of artifacts and information on Native American Culture). So, now you ve gained an insight into Native American culture in the American mid-west, it s time to head northeast to experience one of Colorado s pride and joy locations The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The phenomenon of the Dunes is potentially bizarre to many; who would think a desert could exist in the heart of the Rocky Mountains? Well, you ll see how they came to be when you visit, and you ll be intrigued by the story as well as the visuals. Accommodation-wise, head to Alamosa a town with an abundance of places to crash. For the final chapter of your trip, you ll be heading northwest, to Grand Junction, where you ll see THE pride and joy of Colorado Colorado National Monument. Colorado National Monument is an incredible location, and you ll find some of the most beautiful sunrise and sunset scenery in the mid-west, here. In terms of places to stay, check out Grand Junction, where an abundance of digs can be found, as well as places to eat. All good trips, supposedly, must end, and so it s time to head back to Denver. This doesn t mean a dull drive, though. You ll be making your way back on I70, which is one of the nicer interstate roads of the US, and it s very direct. We recommend a final night in downtown Denver, so you can look at and talk about all your great photos, experiences, and maybe do a bit of shopping. National Parks, Monuments & Peaks in Colorado MAPS & ITINERARIES 2

Trip Details We recommend between 10-15 days to really explore what Colorado has to offer. Doing so during the warm seasons, between May and October, will also improve your time here in the US. Along the way, you ll be able to try lots of different hikes and photography spots, so be prepared with a good camera. It s worth maintaining awareness of the weather, especially thunderstorms - the Rocky Mountains are known for snow, rain, extreme heat, and frost, usually with very little warning. Bringing plenty of water is important, as the majority of this trip will be spent in the high desert, where you re advised to drink at least one gallon a day. DAY 1: Arrival in Denver Arrive at Denver International Airport and take the shuttle to pick up your rental car. You can drive into downtown and enjoy the famous Mile High City where the capital building is exactly 1 mile above sea level (1,609m). Check out the 16th Street Mall in Denver. Best place to shoot the skyscrapers: Colorado Rockies Stadium at sunset Best dining experience: the famous LoDo (lower Downtown) The Oxford Hotel Things we recommend to buy in Colorado: Colorado Rockies or Denver Broncos Jersey Rocky Mountain Chocolate 6 pack of Colorado s craft beers: Oskar Blues Locally made beef jerky National Parks, Monuments & Peaks in Colorado MAPS & ITINERARIES 3

DAY 2: Northern Colorado s Front Range (driving time: 2 hours) When you wake up the next day, you should make a quick visit to the Capitol, and then drive along the Front Range Mountains toward Loveland. Explore the local arts in the renowned sculpture park and try one of Colorado s local beers. We recommend getting the Loveland Craft Beer Passport for beer tasting. If you are into shopping, you might also want to check out the Centerra Outlets, where you ll find some of CO s best bargains. Otherwise, the Devil s Backbone offers a unique one-hour hike along an impressive red canyon ridge. After taking in Loveland, drive through the Thompson River Canyon and arrive in Estes Park. Stay overnight and explore the local restaurants, galleries and crafts stores. Best Place to photo shoot art in Loveland: Sculpture Park Devil s Backbone Best bargain shopping in Colorado: Centerra Outlets Best one-hour hike in the foothills: Devil s Backbone Loveland Estes Park DAY 3: Rocky Mountain National Park & Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake (driving time: 4 hours) Once you ve woken up, it s time to depart Estes Park and head through RMNP, to stay at Grand Lake. While meandering the park, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for moose, elk, and bighorn sheep. This is one of the best places in CO to see wildlife, and it brings people from all over the world. You ll want to check out Trail Ridge road one of the top scenic drives in the central states. You ll be impressed by its beauty, that s for sure. Once you ve hiked and photographed the Rocky Mountain National Park, you should have arrived in Grand Lake. Walk down the main street and get to know the town. There s plenty of accommodation, and the town boasts of an array of places to dine. Best place to shoot photos: Rocky Mountain National Park Trail Ridge Road Elk Meadows Best morning coffee: Moon Kats Tea Shoppe in Estes Park Fat Cat Café in Grand Lake for good food A Bistro for good food and beverages in Grand Lake Best day hike in Rocky Mountain National Park: Emerald Lake Best kept secret: Hot Sulphur Springs Resort DAY 4: Mount Evans Day four is a good one. You ll need to make your way to Mount Evans, one of Colorado s giant hidden gems. It s an easy enough drive from Grand Lake and in Idaho springs, either before or after you have been to the summit, you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many great restaurants there. They say it s best to not hit high-altitude on an empty stomach, so it s worth considering whether that bison burger should wait. Accommodation is available in this area, and staying here will be most ideal, since you ll use a lot of time getting to the summit and back. Best place to shoot: Mount Evans summit Summit Lake Grand Lake at sunrise before leaving to Mount Evans. JC Suites in Idaho Springs Best local restaurants: (bison burger) Westbound Down/The Buffalo DAY 5: Guanella Pass Guanella pass is next on the list. Head there via Georgetown and meander up. You ll get above 11,000ft on this pass, so make sure water is well stocked. The pass is, aesthetically speaking, characterized by its highest point of driving, and the views there are phenomenal. You ll be looking towards National Parks, Monuments & Peaks in Colorado MAPS & ITINERARIES 4

the summit of Mount Evans, where you just were, as well as Mount Beirstadt. If there s one thing that ll make you realize the scale of the Rockies, this is it. After taking in the scenes here, head down towards Grant, where you ll turn right and head towards the fabled Kenosha Pass, along highway 285. Pull off just before descending into South Park, at the Kenosha Pass overlook, and take in the views. During Autumn, nestled to the left of the main view, is an aspen grove that ll be bright yellow and orange. This is one of the better groves out there it s just huge. Once you ve spent some time at the overlook, head down into Jefferson and stop at Pony Espresso. Pony Espresso prides itself on its high caliber coffee and sells it at a very reasonable price. It s well worth stopping in this classic high-desert town before heading to Salida, where you ll spend the night. Salida is comprised of antique stores, galleries, restaurants, and rafting activities, as well as other novel outdoor attractions. This is the perfect pitstop before heading to the magnificent Black Canyon of Gunnison. A great cup of coffee: Pony Espresso Best local restaurants: (slight detour both in Bailey, CO) Mad Jack s Mountain brewery (great beer) The Rustic Station (comfort food) DAY 6: The Black Canyon It will take about 2 hours to get to the Black Canyon from Salida, and you ll be heading over Monarch Pass, one of Colorado s best mountain passes. Arrive at the Black Canyon during the day, around lunchtime, and take the afternoon and evening to explore the park and to get some nice sunset shots. After that, get a bite to eat in the nearby town of Montrose, and prepare to depart the next day to Mesa Verde National Historic Park. Best dining experience: Ted Nelson s Steakhouse: great food, perfect steak. The Stone House: great seafood, steak, and beverages. Black Canyon Inn: clean and comfortable accommodation affordable. Hampton Inn Montrose: clean, comfortable, and affordable. DAY 7: Mesa Verde National Park (driving time: 3 hours) Getting to Mesa Verde Country from the Black Canyon will take about 3 hours. Once in downtown Durango, check out the Jean-Pierre Bakery - a true French bakery with great coffee, breakfast, and delicious pastries. Mesa Verde is a very special park. It s the remains of a civilization that once flourished in the US. Specifically, the peoples of Mesa Verde were Puebloan Native Americans. The place is fascinating not only for its history, but also its rock formations its lanscape. We recommend taking a guided tour throughout the villages to learn everything about the Puebloan people, now thought to be part of the Ute tribe. The region is famous for the Native American culture, and their local arts and crafts. When driving along the highway, stop at their stores and shop for hand-made goods. Best place to buy native american jewelry: Notah Dineh Trading Company Best place to shoot photos: First Village, Mesa Verde National Park Recommended hike: Petroglyph Point Hike Best cultural dining: Gazpacho Mexican, Durango Recommended Hotel: Springs Resort Pagosa Springs DAY 8: Hovenweep National Monument (2 hours) Hovenweep National Monument is located about 2 hours from Durango and is one of the true hidden gems of Southwestern Colorado. The park is detached, and out of the way, which is probably why it feels so special. When you go there, you really feel like you re getting personal with the history of the area. There s fewer people, and you have a great deal of freedom to move about. We recommend staying in Cortez on the night of this expedition, which is just National Parks, Monuments & Peaks in Colorado MAPS & ITINERARIES 5

under an hour from Hovenweep. A couple great places to eat in Cortez are the Farm Bistro, located on main street, and The Shiloh Steak House, just a little further out from the main part of town. Best local restaurants: Farm Bistro: great food and organic beverages in Cortez. Shiloh Steak House: Great steak, wine, and atmosphere. Econolodge: affordable, clean, and ideally situated accommodation. Great entry point for Mesa Verde: Cortez, as well as Hovenweep. Anastazi Heritage Center: Great museum full of Native history. DAY 9: Alamosa s Great Sand Dunes & Colorado rafting (driving time: 2.5 hours) After Hovenweep, it s time to head to the Dunes. On your way, check out one of Pagosa Spring s coffee shops, for example, the River Pointe Cafe, and then head further east over to Wolf Creek Pass. Stop on the way and take a photo of you standing on the continental divide from atop Lobo Overlook. After doing so, head toward South Fork and then to Alamosa, toward the entrance of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This national park is amazing and we reckon it s a must to hike up one of the dunes. You ll find the best views up there and you ll be able to see the towering 13/14ers in the distance. Also, if you have a snowboard, you can ride the sand dunes as well people do it all the time it s a thing out in Alamosa area. The Dunes are an amazing phenomenon, and without doubt they re one of Colorado s most unique photo opportunities. After experiencing the bizarre dunes, and after a little stop at the secret Zapata Falls just outside the park - head back to Alamosa to get a bite to eat and good night s rest you ll need it. Tomorrow, you ll be heading up to Grand Junction to experience Colorado s pride and joy feature The Colorado National Monument. Best day hike: Great Sand Dunes Zapata Falls hike Best place to shoot photos: Great Sand Dunes San Luis Valley off Hwy 285 Best kept secret: Colorado Gator Farm Best water activity: Raft the Royal Gorge Canyon Recommended Hotel: Hampton Inn & Suites DAY 10: Colorado National Monument (5hours) The drive is five hours from Alamosa, but there ll be plenty to see and take in on your way. You ll go through mountains, desert, and rich forests. We recommend you stay the night in Grand Junction, as this is just a short drive from the monument, and will put you on track to depart to Denver the next day with ease. Clarion Inn: traditional hotel with a variety of amenities. Affordable. Pool, wifi, dining. Holiday Inn Hotel: Modern, wifi, Pool, small gym, near airport. Best dining experience: Bin 707 Foodbar: great food, beverages, atmosphere. Pablo s Pizza: great pizza, friendly atmosphere, and affordable. DAY 11: Shopping near Denver - Final Day (driving time: 3.7 hours) After all the sightseeing at Grand Junction and the Colorado National Monument, head towards Denver. If you have an extra day, we recommend attending one of the Colorado Rockies baseball games or doing a final shopping session in the famous upscale Cherry Creek Shopping mall. You will find most of the famous luxury brands and great deals at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, which is just south of downtown Denver. Also, you might want to check out the theme park Elitch Gardens or the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. All those attractions are worth a full day of exploration.
