President's Message Another month has gone by and the weather is beginning to look more favorable for Model A ing. Starting this month, we are gearing up for some enjoyable outings. We have the Regional meet coming up that some are planning on attending. Soon after that is our 25 th Annual Ford show in Benson. I would like to encourage all club members to participate in this event. It will be a day of meeting old friends, and getting to know some of new ones. There will be something that you can do to help make this event special by volunteering your time and offering to help with the various activities. I would like to thank everyone that has helped with out Tech Talks so far this year. We are very fortunate that we have people with a knowledge of the Model A that are willing to pass this important information on to our fellow club members. I believe that we have some upcoming talks that will be just as informative and helpful to all of us. I would encourage everyone to attend and if you have a topic that we can cover in our meetings, please come forward and let me or one of the board members know. We will see if we can schedule a tech talk on the subject. Thanks to everyone who helped with the highway liter pick up this last month. There will be more information on this in the newsletter. The club has more activities on schedule for this summer. One is the Seldin car display and another is the Plymouth Co. Fair in LeMars IA. There will be other things for you to take part in if you would like to. I encourage everyone to take note of upcoming events and participate if you can. Well, I ve rambled on about long enough so will sign off for this month. I hope to see you all at the regular meeting and other special events soon. May Activity Reports Lofte Theater Outing The following members met at the Loft Theater to see in Manley, Ne. for our Sunday, May 29 th outing. Don & Karen Noodell, Bob & Mary McKinney, Lee Hendrix, Ed & Millie Jankowski, Dale Jergensen, Roland & Sherri Kunz and Howard & Mary Denker. We were all entertained by the comedy Leaving Iowa. After the show we drove to the Cedar Creek Steakhouse and enjoyed a great meal and good conversation. It was a very enjoyable afternoon (and I didn t have to cook the meal!!!!) Mary Denker Editor s note: I think the play brought back memories of traveling by car with your parents as a kid, or taking your young kids on vacation. Howard must have been saying something very interesting! Cleaning Up Pays Highway liter pick up on May 4. The weather was COLD and windy, after a rainy Friday. In spite of it all, there were 3 brave souls that showed up to do our civic duty to clean up our section of Highway 36. Those present were Dale Jergensen, El Gertner, John Mabry, Don Noodell, Howard Denker, Lee Hendrix, Ed & Millie Jankowski, Doug & Vicki Heeren and Bruce and Lori Rima and their granddaughter Hailey. One member was lucky enough to find a $00.00 bill. It was a little dirty, but it was real! Other interesting finds have been discovered in past years, but this treasure was the most prosperous find to date. Once again, thanks to everyone that helped. Lee Hendrix 2

Up Coming Event Details Upcoming LeMars Tour Come to LeMars, Iowa where Life is Sweet for a July 29-3 tour. Attend all or part of the weekend. Tentative schedule includes: Eating @ Bob s Drive Inn for their famous Bob Dog. A sweet stop to the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor at their new location. A visit to the Plymouth County Fair Grounds $7.00/ individual entrance fee for the day and roped off parking in the Pioneer Village area for Model A parking. Free entertainment on the Village stage and in the Grand Stand throughout the day. Visit www.plymouthcountyfair.org for further information and the fair s daily schedule. Dining at nationally recognized Archie s Steak House for meals ranging from hamburgers, to dry aged steaks and seafood. Then wrap up the weekend with a pancake breakfast @ Doug & Vicki Heeren s home. A Board of Director s Meeting will also be held @ the Business Center/Breakfast Room at America s Best Value Inn. For more information look for fliers at the next general meeting, or contact Doug & Vicki Heeren. hrnfarms@frontiernet.net or 72-540-0380. Henry Doorly Zoo The Henry Doorly Zoo has contacted our club to help them celebrate an event called ZOOM. They would like as many cars as we can get there from our club on Sunday, June 9. This is the day after the Benson Ford Show. The times are from 8:5 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The basic concept of the event is to focus on different types of vehicles-and will also tie into the speed of the animals ( example: A Cheetah can run up to 70 mph ). I'm not sure where that places the Model A!!! They want to place cars among the exhibits and will escort us into place before the Zoo opens. You can then stay with your car, or go throughout the zoo until 3:00 pm, when they will escort us out to go home. This will be an excellent opportunity to put our cars on display for the public to see. I encourage as many members as possible to take advantage of this as possible. Because we are willing to put our cars on display, they will admit the driver and two passengers. They would like to have the names of the passengers so they will have passes made out for them. If you can let me know who all is attending as passengers I will forward it on the zoo. Lee Hendrix Seldin Co. Car Show and Old Fashion Ice Cream Social and Family Night The Meadowlark Model A Club has been asked to put on another car display for the Seldin Company at 23 rd and West Center from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on July 2st. This is a Thursday night and they are having an old fashion ice cream social and family night. They will be looking for 25 cars, similar to last year. There will be a sign up sheet at the next meeting. To encourage attendance the club has purchased some really neat gifts for the first 25 members that sign up and then show up for the display. It does not count to only sign up, you also have to show up. If you don t show up your gift will be given to the next person that signed up. So mark your calendars and make sure you are at the next meeting to sign up or call me so I can put you on the list. This should be another fun night so plan to come out and support the club. Tech Talk Talk What a gas! At the May meeting Don Graves discussed gas tanks and showed the inside of a Model A gas tank. He also discussed rebuilding gas gauges and types of instrument panels that were used with different types of gas tanks. On the same theme, Don demonstrated a variety of types of filters for gas lines. At the June meeting, Howard Denker will discuss how to grease wheel bearings. The ladies amused themselves by playing Pigmania, a game from the 70 s and visiting. The ladies have another easy game to play at the June meeting. 50 th Anniversary Next year, our club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary as a chapter in the Model A Ford Club of America. This is a pretty special milestone in our Club history, so that calls for a celebration! Give some thought to what you think our club should do to celebrate this milestone. All ideas are welcome and we will try to make them work. Contact any board member with your thoughts and ideas (phone numbers on the mailer page). Up Coming Event Details cont. Upcoming Tour July 9th Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings as we started for the Gold Coast of Omaha! Yes, we are going to ride Ollie the Trolley on Durham Museum s tour Millionaires and Mansions: South Gold Coast. This tour looks back to the early 900s in the area south of Dodge Street in mid-town Omaha. Many landmarks in the city are located here including the Blackstone Hotel, the Storz Mansion, and the home of Arthur and Zerlina Brandeis. Visitors will see the beauty of traditional architecture and hear the stories of the people who built these magnificent homes. This will be a :30PM tour with an admission fee of $5 per head. If you happen to belong to the Durham Museum, your fee will be $0 per head. The trolley holds 42 people and we plan to go as a group to fill a trolley. A sign-up sheet will be at the June meeting and you will need to pay the admission fee in advance. If you can t make it to the meeting, but would like to be part of the tour group, please contact Don Graves, 402-659-85. Our cut-off date will be July 2 nd. Hope you can make it! "A" Life Story My 929 Tudor #55A, Engine No. 64059, was born May 27, 929. I think she's pretty special because many of my modern brothers have a life expectancy of only about ten years. In the winter of 960 my previous owner let me freeze up and bust my cylinder head. At the time I was living in a ramshackle garage in Benson. This is where my present owner, John, found me and bought me for the sum of $00. When John towed me home he found I wasn't much of a bargain. That was when my "Miseries & Cures" began; they've never stopped! He replaced the cylinder head, repaired the roof, replaced my tires, painted me twice, rebuilt my engine, transmission and rear end, front end, brakes, running board, and splash aprons. You name it I've had it done or need it done. The only bad part of my adoption was that I had to share an outside stall with a 928 Business coupe. However, it was used to "rob Peter to pay Paul" and eventually the 28 was gone. During my younger years at my parents home on 72nd St., a young man used to come by and ask my parents if the Model "A" was for sale. My dad always said no. Thank goodness I held onto it. Oh, by the way, that young man was our own club member Don Graves. About 25 yrs. ago, I had Proud Mary painted and restored by Graves Antique Auto and had the correct colors of Chelsea Blue and Bonnie Gray applied. That is when I restored the interior also. The old "A" still looks pretty good for an old girl. She's had some changes though. She now wears 935 Ford Wheels, (straw colored) and an overdrive which really make's for a good tour car. I don't let her set idle very often as she loves getting together with her fellow old cars. I have now owned this car for 50 yrs! Who would think a relationship could last so long. John Mabry 6
