Darrell s Story Darrell s Story 64 65 Darrell s Story Farmer. Husband. Father. Entrepreneur. Cancer survivor. Fitness Fanatic. Cultivator. Youthful. Darrell Murphy is a fit and trim retired farmer who appears much younger than his 85 years. You wouldn t know it to look at him, but Darrell has also survived recent bowel cancer surgery, and a quadruple bypass two years ago. Things weren t always this way. Despite what you might think, life on the land can be quite inactive. Farming didn t keep me fit. I didn t do any heavy work, and always used machinery, he says. My back hurt, and I struggled to get up out of a chair. After he retired in 2012, he had a lightbulb moment where he realised if he wanted to keep going, he needed to get out and get fit. It was near Christmas and I was sitting in a chair out the back enjoying the sunshine, and I thought I could just stay here and not go anywhere. And I suddenly said, What am I talking about? I ve got to get up and about. He started walking regularly. In the beginning, he couldn t even walk 100 metres before he had to stop. He gradually increased the distance until he was walking 4 kilometres. By the end of the year, he d decided to sign up at the Hamilton Indoor Leisure Activity Centre for some strength training. This was another big step in his life. You need to be organised and get a professional program. It s no good just walking or doing weights. You need to make sure you re moving forward, and if you re not organised you can hurt yourself. Even though he s had serious health issues since he started training, he credits his fitness regime to helping him recover from two major surgeries. He puts his success down to having a routine. You have to have a routine or you won t do it. You won t get the improvement that you want to achieve. Darrell s Story

Roger s Story Roger s Story 72 73 Roger s Story Father. Gentleman. Raconteur. Vietnam Veteran. Change agent. Widower. When asked where he thinks this drive to help others comes from, Roger says without hesitation, My mother. I m just following her example. She was very active in the community. Roger Boness is a stalwart of the community in Mt Evelyn, improving the wellbeing of older and retired RSL members, including being a first-responder in times of need. Last year, he was recognised with the Veteran Community Award in the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards for his work with the veteran community. I do a lot of hospital visits, and do lots of hands-on work, like putting in wheelchair ramps at people s houses, cutting down dangerous trees, delivering wood, or taking people shopping. Sometimes I just go and buy morning tea and sit with them, he says. Roger was conscripted for national service in 1966, and saw active service in Vietnam. Since then, he s actively worked in his community to help veterans through his involvement with the Mt Evelyn RSL. We re a traditional subbranch. We consider ourselves an important part of the community. We don t have any poker machines, so we have to find revenue through other means. Through the RSL, Roger was also active in building a memorial garden which is on the Warburton trail at Mt Evelyn Roger says up to 5,000 people attend the dawn service there each year. Serving others is a theme that runs throughout Roger s life. He was heavily involved in the union movement, where he went from being a carpenter s representative to becoming an Australian Workers Union organiser and later working for the Community and Public Sector Union. When asked where he thinks this drive to help others comes from, Roger says without hesitation, My mother. I m just following her example. She was very active in the community. His secret to living a good life is to live with purpose. Be organised. You ve got to have an agenda. Get up in the morning knowing that you ve got something to do. Stay active, and get out and do it. Roger s Story
