2017-2018 The Prez Message for March 2 President Bill Leavitt skibilll@aol.com (3 L s) Vice Bill Stover Treasurer JoAnn Cleek Secretary Jean Gassoway Mary Golding Allan Nalbor Cheryl Wytovicz Kim Zajicek CMSC Regional VP- Ed Gordon CMSC Liaison, Membership, Newsletter & Website -Janice Shifley-Gordon Midwest Trips & Race Director-Pete Resetar Western Trips Chairman- Charlie Cleek We are now in the middle of our ski season and many of us have been on two or three ski trips already. I, myself, have skied ten days and raced five days so far this winter. Our trips to Sun Valley and Cascade with Nomads Ski Club were great successes with fun for all. The annual ISC Trip to Schuss mountain was cancelled, but Trip Leaders Pete and Henry put together a weekend at Boyne for 14 of us on just two weeks notice, and it was also a great skiing success. 2 members of our club also went to Kitzbuhel, Austria, with the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council (CMSC). In a few days another DSC group will be leaving for Steamboat with the CMSC. Later, we have small groups going to Squaw Valley for the NASTAR National Championships in March and the CMSC Spring Fling in April. Please vote on March 12th. Our elections are coming up and we have a full slate of qualified candidates. Also, we just got volunteers to be trip leaders for our 2019 Taos Trip (Cheryl and Joe Wytovicz) and this trip will go on sale early in June. We are still awaiting air prices, and when we get them we will put the trip price in the Inside Edge. We expect it to be as good a deal as the Sun Valley trip was. If you want to help support our club, volunteer to do something tell me or any Board Member and we will help you get involved. Our gala End-of-the-Year Banquet, run by VP Bill Stover, will be on Friday, May 4, at the Valparaiso Country Club (see separate article). We expect prices to be in the $30-35 range. Plan to attend as there will be some big surprises at this event. We are in the process of planning summer activities, including mini-golf, the annual canoe/ camping trip, a White Sox baseball game and a Railcats baseball game. Also, we are planning at least one social meeting at a location to be announced. Let us know if you have ideas for additional fun activities. An updated membership directory will be available by the end of March. Janice will be contacting the new members to procure pictures and those members that we do not have snapshots of.

SUN VALLEY, IDAHO REPORT JANUARY 20-27, 2018 Our trip to Sun Valley did not disappoint a great group of 48, top notch lodging and amenities, reliable shuttles, decent snow, challenging race course, x -country skiing, snowshoeing and beautiful ski lodges. It was a pleasure to partner with The Chicago Nomads, and not just because they hosted one heck of a hot tub party. And best of all no injuries. There were a few folks that started the trip getting over pneumonia, strep, bad colds, and that slowed them down a bit. Sun Valley, built by the Union Pacific RR in 1936, was the first destination resort in the US. Dollar Mountain is the home to the world s very first chairlift. The resort s T V channel has a continuous showing of the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade staring Sonja Henie, an Olympic gold medal winning figure skater. The resort also offers a skating rink, 6-lane bowling alley, movie theater, large thermal pool, hot tub and exercise room. As I said, top notch. There was a welcome reception for all the clubs staying at the lodge. A few people from DSC & Nomads were lucky and won door prizes. Snacks & beverages were provided. Some of the group took advantage of the SV Nordic Center to x-country ski & snowshoe. On Friday, they took a bus 23 miles north to Galena a day lodge offering an extensive trail system & fantastic scenery. They all gave Galena great reviews. Tuesday was race day. The NASTAR course was fast and the first three gates went straight down. Dave Hubinger, Bill Leavitt, Scott Sanders, Jenny Clarke & Jack Clarke crashed (you can view Bill s spectacular spill on Duneland s Facebook page). The best time was skied by Atilla Donmaz-19.93 sec-gold, followed by Dave Hubinger-22.58-gold, Heather Seger-23.92- silver, Jenny Clarke-24.12-bronze, Henry Bottando- 24.92-bronze, Jack Clarke-25.34- bronze and Glenn Haines-24.58-bronze. Racer s medals were presented to Scott Sanders-25.37, Bill Stover-27.19, Bill Leavitt-27.24 and Jack Anderson-28.39. Our group dinner was held at Whiskey Jacques in the town of Ketchum, which was a nice venue for both clubs to unwind and mingle. They provided delicious pizza & salad. However, yours truly did not properly anticipate how hungry the crowd would be. So a rush order had to be put in for more Snow on Saturday caused United to divert our flight which meant the shuttle took us to Hailey to check-in our luggage and get boarding passes. Then a bus drove us 2 hours south to Twin Falls which resulted in an hour long security line. We arrived in Denver on time. However, mechanical trouble there caused another 90 minute delay. Finally we arrived in O Hare safely with our luggage intact. Our thanks to everyone on the trip. We certainly had a great time hope you did, too. Charlie & JoAnn Cleek Camp/Canoe Trip July 13-14-15 More info regarding cost etc. will be forthcoming in April. Start dusting off all that camping gear and making sure everything works and is ready to load up on the 13th of July. Lots of fun is always had on this trip. Watch for future postings with all the information. Wayne & Cindy Kwallek -Leaders Kwallek@comcast.net 4
