Bulletin THE ROTARY CLUB OF LAVERTON POINT COOK DISTRICT 9800 26 May 2013 Bulletin No. 41 President s message Last week we had a very interesting speaker in Mark Campbell, who came along with his production crew and spoke about his planned trek on the Thai-Burma Death Railway in 2014. Mark outlined his connection to the railway through his Grandfather who had been a POW on the line for 3 and a half years. His grandfather told him part of the story of his time there, in 1987 and the next day Mark joined the Royal Navy. After his death, Mark vowed make the trip to visit the camps and sites of the railway and spent much of his pastime reading as many books as he could, to understand more of the subject. This lead to a trip to Thailand in 2009, and ultimately to the current project to raise awareness and to honour the memory of all the Allied and Asian POWs of the Death Railway. His plan is to trek the entire length of the Thailand section of the infamous Death Railway, in Nov 2014, with the additional plan to televise the trek for national and international TV/DVD release thereafter. Bulletin No. 41 Thanks to those who helped out with rattling the tins for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. I don t know how much we raised yet, but it was a worthwhile effort at the Laverton Train Station where the response was up from last year and the temperature (at least at 6.30am) was down. Yours in Rotary, Our community, Our strength, Our future! District 9800: www.rotarydistrict9800.org.au District 9800 Governor: Dennis Shore New Generations Hosting our inbound exchange student: Valborg. Your assistance requested! Due to certain circumstances, we now need a host family to be an emergency host family, with a significant chance they may be required. One of our host families from another club has some medical issues and they won't be able to confirm if they are able to host or not until the end of July, which is already a week after Valborg arrives. That first week can be covered by Robyn, but after that we need the certainty of who will take her into their home. The hosting period may be able to be negotiated, but tentatively it would be the first host family. If you are willing to host, please contact Robyn Archer a.s.a.p. Assistant Governor Port Phillip Cluster: Cherrie Osborn Rotary International: www.rotary.org RI President: Sakuji Tanaka Many thanks to those that have already replied to the Youth Exchange questionnaire that was attached to last week's Bulletin. For those that haven't yet replied, I have included it again and I ask you to please spend just a few minutes to complete it. Your feedback is vital to structuring Youth Exchange so that the members are happy with the project. Thank you, GORDON CLARENCE Page 2
