Each of these projects means new business, jobs, sales tax and property tax for the Village that helps pay for the next round of projects and helps keeps your costs down. We ve made great progress on the Doederlein Lumberyard project since June and anticipate that all the parking will be ready and available before Heritage Fest. We anticipate a much larger event as we are partnering with Immanuel Lutheran for more tents, food, and activities, as well as all new events throughout the downtown area. To recognize the Doederlein Family contributions and their gracious cooperation with the Village, the Board of Trustees has officially proclaimed August 18, 2014 as Doederlein Day. There is still so much more to be done, but we are finally on our way. We are financially sound, we have some exciting new businesses coming to town, and we anticipate many more to follow. The downtown events, Motor Mondays, Tail Waggin Tuesdays, Wine Down Wednesdays and our weekend markets, have been a fun way for residents to enjoy the summer and have brought people in from surrounding towns. Our local businesses have seen a dramatic increase in sales due to these events. They all invite you to join us at The Depot to enjoy the fun. East Dundee has always been a great place to live and work, and our goal is to make it even better while retaining its small town historic character and small town charm with big city opportunities. Our Village staff does a great job of keeping the website updated with the latest information on events and public information. Residents can always view the Village Meeting agendas along with the minutes before and after each meeting there. In addition, background information is posted online as part of the board packet. Many people may find this helpful in understanding the detail on particular items. Village board meetings are the first and third Monday of each month. Committee of the Whole meetings are also held to discuss upcoming topics. These are usually on the second Monday of the month. We encourage all residents to come and if it is not possible, all Board meetings are videotaped and can be seen on Comcast Channel 17 on Friday nights at 9 p.m. Interested in seeing how your Village government works or perhaps getting involved? Village Recognition for Doederlein Day August 18 The Village of East Dundee has officially recognized August 18, 2014 as Doederlein Day for the family s contributions to East Dundee. A small ceremony was held at the Village Board meeting on Monday, August 18th with friends and family in attendance. What Does the Doederlein Downtown Property Mean to You? When the Village had a meeting with the downtown property and business owners a year and a half ago, the biggest concern of the business owners was parking. This was especially true with the Village s plans to fill the vacant buildings and to market downtown East Dundee as a Culinary District. At the site of the former Doederlein Lumberyard property, the Village and DeLoris Doederlein have entered into a 15 year agreement where the Village will lease the property s eastern portion of the lot for approximately 90 feet. A couple of buildings have been taken down and a chain link fence has been erected so it is easier to see the oncoming bicycle path traffic from Railroad Street. Parking will be less of a problem with the changes implemented at the Doederlein property and the widening and resurfacing of Meier Street. Welcome Blues BBQ! BEFORE AFTER Construction started on July 14th, beginning with the demolition of the Doederlein Lumberyard to create more parking for local businesses. They didn t win the Community PIGNIC Throwdown at the Sunday Farmers Market this past summer for nothing! We ve been treated to just a small offering of Blues BBQ every Sunday at The Depot this past summer, but we can finally have the real thing every day! Located at 102 N. River Street, Blues BBQ features barbecued meats in multiple varieties, including Memphis-style ribs, pulled pork and chicken, and meats prepared naked style, that is, without barbecue sauce. VILLAGE UPDATES Anvil Club Update New Veranda! Now Open to All For Friday Lunch! After extensive interior renovations, the historic Anvil Club unveiled their new outdoor veranda this past summer. Surrounded by beautiful floral displays and potted greenery, it comes complete with a community fire pit, extensive bar, weekly entertainment and great food. Now open for lunch to the public on Fridays, there is no reason for you to miss out! Come for lunch and sign up to become a member! CMAP Study Where Will You be in 2040? This past year, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) did a housing study projection called Homes for a Changing Region for East Dundee, West Dundee, Carpentersville, and Elgin. This study is part of GO TO 2040, a comprehensive plan for sustainable growth through mid-century and beyond. It serves as one of many tools that city planners use to determine housing needs. Population and Household Forecast ANVIL CLUB VERANDA In that same CMAP study that helps to identify how East Dundee can grow given its current space, it provided a comparable housing forecast that you may find interesting: Allen Skillicorn Accountability and transparency go hand in hand with good governance. East Dundee publishes every check and expense on their website each month. On the Budgets, Reports, & Guides page of the website, residents and the press can see all the budgets and audits. Since each check is reviewed by the Board, the check register (or Warrants List) is posted with the agenda for every scheduled meeting. With these additional households and approximately 300 residents, these figures total 1,411 households and a population of 3,209. The Village has a free Wi-Fi connection at Public_Inet. A local business, ITN Deli offers free Wi-Fi for the downtown area as well at DundeeNet. A login is required for both. Come downtown to enjoy a nice lunch or dinner and surf all you want! FREE WI-FI Jeff Lynam Gardiner Place and River Haven (GP&RH) have been fully occupied for slightly over a year now. Both communities provide affordable housing. Affordable housing takes into account that rent and utilities take no more than 30% of household income. Between 2000 and 2010, the need for affordable housing in East Dundee nearly doubled. If you have family or friends that qualify, encourage them to apply or get on the preferential waiting list for East Dundee residents. Can Village Residents Receive Priority to Get on the Waiting List for River Haven Place Apartments? Since the Village of East Dundee agreed to be a partner business with the developer of River Haven Place Apartments, the Village government can move up to the top of the waiting list, up to 20% of the housing units. Since there are 70 total rental units, the Village can accommodate up to 14 families who would like to live there. The Village Board has determined that our preferences would be ranked with the following criteria: 1 2 3 4 5 All residents must meet income guidelines and pass intake standards established by the Illinois Housing Development Authority, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department and the management company. A military veteran that is currently a resident of East Dundee and their immediate family. An immediate relative of a military veteran who is a resident of East Dundee and their immediate family. Immediate relative means: mother, father, son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, sibling or step sibling. A current Village resident and their immediate family. Food for Greater Elgin Will Now Service the East Dundee Area The Food for Greater Elgin food pantry is expanding its reach to include those in East Dundee who need assistance. By partnering with the organization, low-income East Dundee residents can receive food assistance from the pantry, as well as access to services that could include health screenings, medical and insurance information, pet food and other support literature or direction. The organization will supplement what local residents can get from other area food pantries, such as the FISH (Friend, I Shall Help) Food Pantry in Carpentersville. Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day September 12 Bear Necessities was founded in Algonquin by Kathleen Casey and her son Barrett (nicknamed Bear) after he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. David Gaffke and his all-male staff are the stars of a new reality show, Best in Bridal set to debut on FYI, A&E s new cable channel. The days of carving duck decoys by hand has long given way to slick, new inexpensive manufacturing processes. But in East Dundee, a duck decoy dynasty of museum quality and workmanship is what Harold Haertel embodied. Harold Haertel is perhaps best known for his dove decoys; he produced hundreds of these delicate carvings which bring very respectable prices at auction today. Tom Haertel still maintains a rare collection of carvings his late father Harold had created in his home. The Staff COMPLETE BRIDAL Tom Haertel Stephan Pickett If there is one person that knows the Fox River Trail like the back of their hand, it would be Stephan, the owner of The Bicycle Garage in East Dundee. Spend just a few moments with him and you ll soon learn that it is more than just a business, it is a passion. His doors first opened 27 years ago in Barrington, but he soon settled into East Dundee along the bike trail in 1996 and has been a staple to the downtown business district ever since. When not running the business, you can see Stephan s love for the community through his work as the President of the Dundee Township Visitor s Center and as the Village President in Sleepy Hollow, where he and his wife have been residents since 1983. bicyclegarage.net Max Prazak Max is one of the Village of East Dundee s newest employees, having started part-time and recently moved to full-time status. As a Burlington Central graduate, Max has enjoyed interacting with all the residents of East Dundee. As part of the Streets Department of Public Works, Max endured his first harsh winter outdoors stringing lights, shoveling snow and patching potholes as they appeared. He enjoys learning new functions and his favorite experience so far has been using the Bobcat machine to clear debris. Whether erecting fences, setting up for special events, maintaining the grounds or cleaning up after water main breaks, Max is glad to be part of the Public Works team. PUBLIC SAFETY POLICE Public Safety is #1 One of the most important aspects of police work is crime prevention. Should a resident need a police officer for any reason, whether a simple well-check visit or an emergency, please call 911. Many people are reluctant to call 911. Remember, crime prevention is everyone s responsibility and together as a community, East Dundee will continue to be a safe and friendly place to live and work. We intend to keep it that way. School is Back in Session Please Drive Carefully! Summer vacation is over and schools are back in session. Unfortunately, school children are too often the tragic victims of automobile accidents because of their small size, inattention to vehicular traffic, and speeding vehicles. Some of the children may be walking to school for the first time, while others may not heed their pedestrian safety lessons. Drivers need to be especially alert for the following situations: Children walking or riding bicycles Children getting on and off buses Crossing guards at school crossings Posted school speed zones of 20 MPH SCHOOL SPEED LIMIT 20 The East Dundee Police Department strictly enforces all laws regarding school speed zones, school crossings, and bus stop requirements. New Officer The East Dundee Police Department has welcomed a new police officer to join their force. Ryan Miles Ryan Miles was hired to fill a full-time Police Officer vacancy on June 30th. He is currently attending the Police Training Institute in Champaign. FIRE New Fire Station Community Open House October 4 The residents of East Dundee are serviced by the East Dundee Fire Protection District which is a separate municipality from the Village of the East Dundee. The Fire Chief is Steve Schmitendorf. A $5.5 million referendum, approved by taxpayers in November 2012, made the new fire station possible, located near Routes 25 and 72. The new building is more centrally located to serve their entire district, which extends as far east as Higgins Road and Interstate 90. The district serves the villages of East Dundee, South Barrington and Barrington Hills, and unincorporated Kane and Cook counties. NEW FIRE STATION The move also means more room for the East Dundee Police Department, which will expand into the fire department s old building on Third Street. The land the new fire station is built on is owned by the Village. Both fire and Village officials agreed to swap the land for the current fire department building. To make the exchange more equitable, since the Village was receiving three acres of land with a complete building, East Dundee officials said they would donate $100,000 per year to the East Dundee Fire Protection District a separate taxing body for the 20-year life of the loan to build the station to lessen East Dundee residents tax burden by reducing bond payments. National Fire Prevention Week October 4-11 The home of East Dundee s new Fire Station is located near Routes 25 & 72. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.
