THE CAR HOUSE Monthly Newsletter of Division 8 North Central Region National Model Railroad Association Website: http://div8.ncr-nmra.org Stimulus Package Arrives for Central Indiana Railroad Troy, MI: Bill Gawthrop presented Ed Black President of the Central Indiana Railroad with 20 scale tons of steam coal. The coal arrived from the mines in Central (by goodness) West Virginia. Bill explained that this coal was high grade bituminous from the Upper Kittanning seam. Bill s advice to Ed was to burn the coal wisely and not to burn it all at once. Dave Thorton Reports Troy, MI: Dave Thorton reports that the NMRA is doing good financially compared to last year. This is due in part to generous donations and membership renewals. The renewals that normally happen at the end of the year showed up this year in the 1Q2009 financials. Dave reports that no word yet on the resolution of the DCC Sound lawsuit. 13 Schools Recommended to Receive Grant Troy, MI: Allen Crowley reports that 13 area schools are set to receive (magazine) grants. The schools include: Seaholm, Lake Orion, Troy-High, Troy- Athens, Farmington, Dakota, Mott, M e e t i n g : J u l y 1 6, 2 0 0 9 T h e News Contest on! M e e t i n g : J u l y 1 6, 2 0 0 9 Treasurer s Report Troy, MI: John Jackson reports all is well as our bank account and certificates of deposit are doing well Show and Tell Meeting participants presented a wide array of items during show and tell. The topic was short lines or narrow gauge railroads. Of course, current projects are also fair game. Peter Jacobson helped us relive our past with a scratch-built, 5- stall, HO scale A&W drive-in. A great cruise stop for all of those HO scale teens. Dan Lewis brought in an N scale stock car lettered for the CM&StP. Bill Gawthrop offered a 2-truck, 50 ton Climax lettered as Moore Keppel Lumber Company #3. Bill also brought a photo that he had taken with his Kodak Brownie camera in 1960 in Ellamore, W. Va. By then the Climax had been re-lettered for the Middle Fork Railroad (successor to Moore Keppel). The prototype engine has been restored and relettered for Moore Keppel #3. It can be seen pulling tourist trains on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad in southeastern West Virginia. Phil Doolittle brought in HOn3 scale, 2-truck Shay painted and weathered by Donald Dass of Zenith Model Restoration. Phil also brought a Denver So. Park & Pacific flat car and a D&RGW box car. The rolling stock are all lettered for the Apparition Logging & Navigation Company. Dave Thorton brought in Volumes I & II of Chasing Narrow Gauge. Dave also brought in a program from the NMRA National Convention in Hartford. Ed Black presented a scratch built stock car lettered for his Central Indiana Railroad. The car s roof featured a hatch that permitted trainment/livestock handlers to feed and water the livesotck in route. Jim Zinser brought in an HO scale train lettered for his Copper Valley Railway. This freelance short line is set in copper country (also YOOPER country) circa 1954. The consist includes a 2-8-0 (Bachmann), Accurail box car, and Lifelike, Proto 2000 caboose. Page 2 of 6

M e e t i n g : J u l y 1 6, 2 0 0 9 Allen Crowley offered a tip for the meeting attendees. He suggested using a furnace filter with fan to exhaust air from the train room. This method of air flow control improves dust control and general circulation. Curt Danielewicz offered a Detroit & Mackinac C420 in Brunswick Green and Gold scheme. Like the Pennsy s Brunswick green, this color-shade looked black in real life. Stu Sonta brought in the N scale crapper. Imagine if you were N-scale size and really had to go. Wouldn t this be the just the solution. Better than a tree or bush but just short of the Kohler de-lux. Ken Scherer offered an Hon3 scale box car built from a kit. The completed car awaits lettering. John Jackson brought in a DT&I GP38 leading a train of short-line cars lettered for Detroit & Mackinac, Lenance County, Hillsdale County and Escanaba & Lake Superior. Dick Dittus presented Rio Grande Southern #41, a Class C-19 2-8-0 built by Baldwin in 1887 and on the RGS property at the time it was closed down. The prototype is now at Knott s Berry Farm leading a very active life. Walt Connell brought in a photograph illustrating the progress to date of laying track in Cornal Yard and staging tracks. Terry Bossick brought in a narrow gauge 2-4-0 and a Canadian LRV. Page 3 of 6

Jerry Shanek offered a Husker Mining & Lumber Company 2-truck Shay M e e t i n g : J u l y 1 6, 2 0 0 9 A current project for Larry Wolohon was the building of a Sunshine Models FGEX trussrod refer. He entered the car in the kit-built model contest at the NMRA convention in Hartford and won 2 nd place! Congrats Larry!! Jim Clements presented a Wheel & Tie car that he built from a Grandt Line kit. Jim also offered plans for the prototype car. Thanks to all who participated in Show and Tell Thanks, as well to all who filled out the Fact Sheets for Show and Tell. w.e.g Please forward any and all erratta to Bill Gawthrop (wegawthrop@aol.com). Virtual tomatoes are also welcome.. it s part of our quality improvement.. Speaking of erratta, here are a few bloopers from last month s Car House: 1. NMRA election results should have said newly re-elected pres and VP. 2. Misspelled gauge in Show and Tell next month. 3. New division ( Michiana Division ) forming in South Bend, IN area. There is still no decision on whether the new division would become a part of the NCR or Midwest Region. The boundaries of the new proposed division roughly approximate the now-inactive Calumet Division of the Midwest Region plus the 4 counties in southwest Michigan. The effort is being led by Jim Six. 4. Misspelled Jerry Bossick should have been Terry Bossick. Sorry Terry. Page 4 of 6

M e e t i n g : J u l y 1 6, 2 0 0 9 This Month s Clinic This month s clincwas a PowerPoint slide show of Jack Burgess Yosemite Valley Railroad. This spectacular HO scale layout has been featured in many publications and is viewable via the internet: @ www.yosemitevalleyrailroad.com. Jack s layout approach was to capture the prototype at an exact date with scenes based on verifiable historical evidence (in-person interviews, books, records, and other historical data.) This 20 x 20 layout consists of three levels with scenes accurately representing the prototype. There are numerous instances that represent the exact placement of structures, trackage, and trees positioned according to photographs of the scenes from the prototype. The detail is increditable! Upcoming Events Next Month s Clinic A long list of events and activities are coming up on the calendar. Information is readily available via the Internet or on fliers at local hobby shops. A couple of notable events include: 1. August 9: Division 8 Layout Tour featuring layouts of: a. Peter Jacobson b. Ed Black c. Saul Kalbfeld 2. August 2: Lakeshore Garden Railway Club Open House. Flyer was sent to all Division 8 members on July 21. Intermodal 101 by Rich Mahoney.. Next Month s Show and Tell The topic for next month s Show and Tell is: Anything intermodal. Section House Plan follows on next page. Page 5 of 6
