Division Points Indian Nations Division of the National Model Railroad Association www.tulsanmra.org Issue No. 19 November 2009 From the Superintendent In September our Division Hosted a Layout Design and Operations weekend. The day started with Chuck Hitchcock s presentation on the Argentine Industrial District Railway. Keith Jordan, who began his presentation with a little history of the area that he was modeling along with prototype photos and model photos of his shelf layout and how it is operated. He ended his presentation with a very interesting video on how a freight yard works. Andy Sperandoe presented, 10 Tips to Yard Designs and Operations. Marty McGuirik entertained us with his layout design and evolution from his previous layouts. He also talked about going from a freelanced layout to a more prototype layout. The last presenter was Paul J. Dolkas whose topic of discussion was Out with the Old, In with the New. The day ended with a panel discussion by all the presenters. It was interesting to hear the differences in answers to the questions posed. You have to love model railroading as there are so many ways to accomplish or achieve the same or desired results and this panel proved that! Several area layouts participated in operations and also Open Houses for those that attended the meet. Thanks to all those that help make it a success!.see you at the meeting... September Highlights Ed Bommer was presented his certificate of Achievement for Association Official from our AP Chairman John Anderson. Congratulations! Ed is very much involved with the NMRA, not only is he our Division s Director and attend the region board meetings. He recently was asked to be the O Scale Coordinator on the NMRA Standards Committee. His job will be to listen to the O scale and O Gauge community of modelers and gather their concerns about the standards (or lack of them) in that scale. It includes 3 rail, 2 rail, traction and narrow gauge. NMRA National Convention - John Anderson John did a presentation on his trip to the NMRA National Convention which was held in Hartford Connecticut this past summer. John shared his photo s not only of the train show but some of Hartford area also. John did take in some of the layout tours that were available and had photo s of the layouts he visited. He also had photo s from the National Train show where several module layouts were set up and running too. He took a trip down to Essex Connecticut and had taken photo s of the the Valley Railroad Company.
More September Highlights Simple Backdrop Painting - Dave Salamon Dave did a presentation on painting your own backdrop. First he talked about supplies needed, the different brushes, the type of paints to use. Talked about making his own Paint Pallet from old discarded masonite that we all have left over from building our layouts. Jim Sinclair brought over a 8 piece of masonite that Dave saw in his layout room a few weeks before the meeting that was already painted sky blue. From their he took and penciled in roughly what he wanted it to look like. And then began painting. Using photo s is the best way to capture what you want it to look like.
