Brief Introduction of the places suggested above: Fort Kochi: Visit Fort Kochi, a small village close to the suburbs of the main city. With panoramic beaches all along the coastline, you can see the famed Chinese fishing nets and sailing ships. The beautiful village and countryside is lined with old Victorian era styled bungalows, a reminiscent of the European settlements. This location was the first settlement of the Europeans in Kochi. Princess Street: If you want to see the remnants of the European architecture, visit Princess Street. The street was famous all through the European occupation and the huge bungalows lined on this quaint street portray the architecture of their respective owners ranging from Portuguese, Dutch, British and French. If you want to see what they looked from inside, most of these homes allow you a visit. St. Francis Church: St. Francis CSI Church is the landmark building, which was foundby the Portuguese. This edifice is built on the site, where the body of late explorer Vasco da Gama was originally buried. Originally built in 1503, this church is the oldest European church in India. The church was initially a simple wooden structure, which was dedicated to St Bartholomew. Cherai Beach: The panoramic Cherai beach is at the end of Vypeen Island, one of the many tiny islands off the shoreline. This panoramic island can be easily reached by boat and land. This isolated yet enchanting beach is far away from commercial activities, cocooned by palm and coconut trees, azure waters and golden sand. It is situated near the Vembanad Lake, which is Kerala s largest freshwater lake. History of KumarakomThe name Kumarakom was derived from the deity of the oldest temple Kumaran. Kumaran's Akam or place became Kumarakom. In 1878, the marshy mangrove on the bank of the Vembanad Lake was cleared and replaced by coconut plantations. George Alfred Baker, an English farmer who arrived in India in 1857, reclaimed 500 acres of Vembanad Lake to gardens and paddy fields.
