Friday 13 th SEPTEMBER 2019: SPOKANE, Washington: Davenport Hotel We assemble at the Davenport Hotel, a landmark building dating from 1914 and listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. Its lobby was inspired by the Spanish Renaissance and has a large glazed atrium. Overnight accommodation. Saturday 14 th September 2019: SPOKANE & Ship After breakfast, we have time to visit the Arts & Culture Museum housing one of the finest collections of indigenous artefacts in the Northwest. As we transfer to the ship, we travel south through the mountains of north east Oregon to Clarkston, (2.5 hour drive) where we are welcomed on board with champagne and canapés. Saturday 15 th Sept: HELL S CANYON An introduction from a Nez Perce tribal member sets the scene for our adventures in this land of Pioneers. We hear the story of Lewis & Clark, sent by Jefferson in 1804 to open up the North West before we embark on a local boat to enter America s deepest Canyon. Carved by the Snake River, Idaho s Seven Devils mountain peaks tower above, steep cliffs hem in the river, wildlife is abundant and diverse including bighorn sheep and eagles. We stop for a picnic before returning to our ship for the afternoon and dinner.
Mon 16 th Sept: SNAKE RIVER & PALOUSE FALLS PARK A truly scenic section of the Snake River precedes our entrance into the Palouse River. Binoculars will be essential today to catch the waterfalls and varied birdlife, as our ship passes dams and locks of the Snake River. We can walk through territory alive with tribal legends and stories to gaze down into the canyon or stay below to do some kayaking or perhaps take a dip in the Palouse River itself. Tues 17 th Sept: Washington Wine Country & Richland A change of style this morning, as we visit the warmest and smallest vineyard region in Washington benefitting from the unique combination of climate and geology. The unusual soils produce wines of superb concentration and depth which we experience during our private vineyard tour and tasting at the family-owned Terra Blanca Estate gloriously located in the Yakima valley. After lunch we can work it all off with a walk or bike ride along the Columbia river trail followed by an evening s cruise and perhaps a visit to the Bridge. Wed 18 th Sept: Deschutes River Today it s all about the river, whether you choose a rafting adventure (Class 2 & 3 rapids, kit and wetsuits provided), explore the river canyon or have a dip in a river pool. We ll picnic beside the river, with a walk or bike ride in the afternoon, ending the day with river-side cocktails. Thurs 19 th Sept: Rowena Plateau & Columbia River Gorge Striking landscapes and land forms surround us today, from basalt lava flows carved into riverside cliffs while wide rolling plateaux and peaceful lakes provide a contrast. Our activities vary between walks through the Nature Reserve which surrounds the river, or we can take a bike and explore the orchards and farms of the Hood River, producing excellent cider, or simply enjoy the peace of life on board ship with a book and stunning views.
Fri 20 th Sept: COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE & THE MULTNOMAH FALLS Our ship descends slowly through the dramatic flight of Bonneville Locks, named after the early explorer who charted much of the Oregon Trail. When built in 1938 this was the highest lock lift in the world and still lifts ships 10 times higher than the Panama Canal. We have a private tour, see the fish ladders created for the leaping Coho Salmon at their most plentiful in the autumn: at the base Californian sea lions await their prey. We can walk through the temperate forest, opt for a steeper climb to the Wahkeena Falls or simply stay on board. Our final stretch of river cruise takes us eighty miles through the Columbia River Gorge cutting 4,000 feet through Cascade Mountains. Sat. 21 st Sept: PORTLAND A last delicious breakfast before we disembark in Portland, famous as the world s tenth cleanest city. Either take the transfer to the airport, or perhaps stay in town to visit some of the city s attractions - roses, bridges, a giant book store, querky food carts and the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary.
