2 Wow! Do we owe a lot to the Ancient Greeks, or what?! Would we have Democracy, theater, dramas, comedies, the Olympic Games, epic stories, and philosophy without them? Probably not! Even though we learned tons of stuff about the Greeks in the last chapter, can you believe there is still lots more to learn about these fascinating people? In this chapter, we ll find out what it was like to live in the giant city-states of Athens and Sparta, how common Greeks lived, what it was like to be a Hoplite soldier, how the Peloponnesian War changed Greece, and who King Philip and Alexander the Great were. Whew! Could we pack any more excitement into Old World Cultures?! Section 1 Daily Life in Athens In this section, we ll find out what it was like to live in the huge citystate of Athens. We ll learn about the daily lives of common Greeks, how life was different for men and women, and what it was like to be a slave. 1. Read the paragraphs on page 198.
