Why and how is tourism changing places across the world? Tourism is one of the world s fastest growing industries. As King s students develop into the citizens of tomorrow, travelling to new and exciting places will undoubtedly be an aspiration for many of them. Building on prior learning from LC1 (map skills), LC2 allows students to investigate tourism, both as an industry, and as a vehicle to explore often unknown places and cultures. Students will investigate a number of themes within this popular topic, such as the positive and negative effects of tourism, tourism in UK, tourism in LICs and HICs, and the potential benefits of eco-tourism. Week 1: Why is tourism the world s fastest growing industry? Week 2: Where do people go on holiday? Week 3: What are the positive and negative effects of tourism at a range of scales? Week 4: How can tourism develop in places previously considered impossible? Week 5: How could eco-tourism affect the tourism industry?
Week 6: Revision and Assessment week Week 7: GAP teaching Progress Objectives By the end of this LC, students in Geography will be able: To know and recall what tourism and tourists is/are. To understand the social, economic and environmental reasons for the growth in tourism. To recognise the ways in which tourism can have an influence on geography and development. To compare and contrast tourism in LICs and HICs. To analyse how tourism can have an impact on the geography of different destinations. To evaluate how eco-tourism may offer a sustainable solution to problems identified throughout the module. Assessment in week 6 will be against the above objectives Week 1 LOE: Why is tourism the world s fastest growing industry? Stage 1 + 2: What is tourism and why has the tourism industry grown so rapidly? Hypothesis: Social reasons are mainly responsible for the global growth in tourism LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to define what tourism is also they will be able to explain what the social reasons for tourist growth are and determine whether they are the biggest contributors Bronze: Identify reasons why tourism has grown Silver: Describe and explain trends in global tourism (using graphs) Gold: Analyse how changes in the global economy could affect tourism
Week 2 LOE: Where do people go on holiday? Stage 1 and 2: Tourism in Europe Hypothesis: Tourism in Europe is from North to South LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe the movement of tourists across Europe Bronze: Identify a range of tourist attractions across the world Silver: Describe the different types of holidays people can go on Gold: Explain why Europe is a popular tourist destination (using evidence) Week 3 LOE: What are the positive and negative effects of tourism at a range of scales? Stage 1: Tourism: Good or bad? Hypothesis: Tourism creates more problems for destinations than it solves. LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to indicate the positive and negative effects of tourism Bronze: Describe positive and negative effects of tourism on a place Silver: Identify/Explain how tourism can be deemed advantageous to a location and it s people Gold: Evaluate how the negatives can be managed to reduce harm to the local people/environment
Stage 2: Mass Tourism Hypothesis: Mass tourism is the only reason for Benidorm LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain the differences between LIC s and HIC s and use a case study to show how tourism impacts these countries differently Week 4 Bronze To identify a range of reasons why people like to visit to Benidorm Silver: To explain the advantages and disadvantages of mass tourism on Benidorm Gold: To decide whether the advantages of mass tourism in Benidorm outweigh the disadvantages, using facts and figures to back-up your opinion LOE: How can tourism develop in places previously considered impossible? Stage 1: Dubai Hypothesis: HICs do not need to rely on tourism as a source of income LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to locate Dubai and assess the impact of tourism Bronze: Identify a number of LIC and HIC countries Silver: Explain why Dubai is an attractive tourist destination Gold: Assess how tourism may change in the future and the consequences of this change Stage 2: Out of this world! Hypothesis: Space Tourism is more of a dream than a reality LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain why space tourism is appealing and identify the problems that this could cause Bronze: Identify several attractions of going into space Silver: Explain the problems that exist with space tourism
Week 5 Gold: Evaluate whether space tourism should be allowed commercially in the future LOE: How could eco-tourism affect the tourist industry? Stages 1 and 2: Eco-tourism: A ready-made solution? Hypothesis: An eco-tourism resort is damage-free LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe what eco-tourism is and what the positive and negative impacts of this can be using a case study Bronze: Identify what eco-tourism is Silver: Describe/Explain how eco-tourism differs to usual tourism and the reason why we it is important Gold: Evaluate how eco-tourism is more sustainable than usual tourism Week 6 1 hour revision session This week will consist of revision and an end of learning cycle assessment. Students will be given time to complete both group and independent revision tasks. The following lesson, students will complete an assessment consisting a range of multiple-choice, short answer and long answer questions. 1 hour end of semester assessment Gap Analysis Reinforcement Week 7 Gap Reinforcement This end of module time will be allocated to re-teaching any gaps discovered in each individuals knowledge as a result of the assessment process
