From the President s Desk... So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen goodbye! Last Thursday, the club celebrated the retirement of four of our good members. Like everything else in life, all good Rotary beginnings have happy endings. Best wishes to the four members and a big thank you to Terry Hill for his help with the farewell presentation. We also inducted our new member, Nikola Sanders. The evening concluded with a display of metal and welding art by our friend Tony Jones-very impressive indeed. Another big thank you to those members who responded to Ian Tinney s call for volunteers for the Pony Club BBQ. Yes, the club is healthy and our club members are very dedicated to helping and making a difference. Healesville Races are over for the year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Jones and his team for a job well done. Ray Jarvis and Stu have received the green light for the student exchange which means they can now finalise the arrangements for 2018-2019 student exchange program. Today we are conducting an extraordinary general meeting followed by the club assembly. Till next Thursday, keep well and keep the Rotary wheel turning. Last Week s Meeting - April 12th President Sam Halim welcomed everyone, especially our members whose long service to our club gets acknowledged tonight: Peter Gebert, Peter Henry, Rod Thom and Allan Davidson. Partners Helen Thom, Trudy Gebert, Glenda Robinson and Nikola Sanders as well as Bruce Thomas, David Lazenby and PDG Barry Vickers also got a warm welcome. Secretary - Michelle Shafran: The Art of Speech Festival is on this weekend from Friday to Sunday. Treasurer - Don Fitzgerald: Bank balances are ok. The Rotary Community Bus will get a cradle for luggage fitted. One of the backseats needs to be moved to the front. Community - Ian Tinney: A big Club involvement is in the planning stage. We will held a BBQ on the 5 th and 6 th May at Gladysdale to assist the Pony Club of Victoria. 300+ people need breakfast and lunch! We need a lot of manpower, so I pass a list around to find out who is going to help. We also need more BBQ equipment, which will be provided by our Cluster Clubs. International - Wilma Best: The Kenya projects from the Rotary Club of Glen Waverley and from St Brigid s Primary School are a result of Father Jason s visit and are now supported with RAWCS grants. The funds will be used for fishponds, chicken growing and bee hives and also to establish a Farmer s Trading Center in Kenya. Vocational - John Robinson: A vocational visit to a Melbourne Airport training facility on the 9 th May at 10:30 am is in the planning stage. More info next week. Tony Jones: I would like to thank everyone who turned up at last week s Page 4 Race Gates - the last one for the season. Stuart McDonald: Please invite guests to our presentation on the 26 th April when Chris Secretan talks about Energy Efficient Housing. He will show us how he built and equipped his new home to become energy efficient. Rae Church: I like to congratulate Tony Jones for a great job with the Race Gates. Graeme Chester reports about ROMAC activities. One of our little patients, Joana, underwent a heart operation 4 weeks ago and flew, together with her mum, back to Dilli. She was thriving and 1 1/2 kg heavier. Lucilia will still spend some time here and gets 2 weeks radiation treatment at Peter Mac s and then 3 weeks re-habitation. Tony Jones - Blacksmith Works Tony surprised us with his exhibition of many beautiful wrought iron household and art pieces which he created. Tony said it is about time to prove what he is doing and everyone present liked it very much. He thanked Sam Halim for giving him the opportunity to expose his work. Tony gave some information how the blacksmith trade developed, starting in 4000 B.C. Our Club Farewells Peter Gebert, Peter Henry, Rod Thom and Allan Davidson. Terry Hill interviewed our 4 leaving long time members, who, added together, spent 117 years in Rotary service. Peter Gebert liked the involvement in social activities, highlights were the annual Relay for Live events and the fantastic show afternoons at Michael Her-

mann s place. Peter organised the Golf Days. He also took part in many projects helping the community. He leaves our club because of his hearing loss he can t follow the talks during meetings. Peter Henry remembers the dramatic time when the accident happened while building the swimming pool. Some club members sustained injuries which are still influencing their lives. But since then there was a strong bond between members. For a large number of years Peter organised guest speakers for our meetings. Peter has severe health issues and finds it hard to continue the membership. Rod Thom, together with Helen got involved in the Deb Ball, the Candlebark and the Relay for Life activities of the Club. In 2000 he became president. His son Trevor became a Rotary exchange student. Rod also was involved in many hands-on projects, in wood-chopping and supplying firewood as well. Rod is now a Probus member, loving the convenient meeting arrangements. Allan Davidson got introduced to the Club in 1992 when his son Matthew became a Rotary exchange student. Curious what Rotary is all about, the first meeting he attended was great fun with the sponsoring club of Alexandra, so he became a member. Highlights were the friendships to Ron Goding and Jim McGregor he developed through Rotary and the conferences. Allan also served as president. Not to forget the long-lasting commitment of Allan and Ruth to the Women s Foundation in Nepal. President Sam Halim addressed the leaving four: You have spent many hours of your life spanning over a large number of years serving the communities through Rotary putting service above yourself. On behalf of everyone here I want to appreciate what you achieved and I wish you all the best in your retirement. To remember the Rotary Club of Healesville I present to each of you a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift. We hope you are visiting us from time to time. Induction of New Member Nikola Sanders President Sam Halim, assisted by Secretary Michelle Shafran, performed the induction ceremony for our newest member, Nikola Sanders. Congratulations and welcome to our club! Attendance: 24 members, 4 partners, 7 guests Fines: $76.80 Raffle: $121.00 Winners: Barbara Dickson Rae Church Page 5
