1 Roy FFA Student Wins at Nationals On October 16, 2016, the Roy FFA Chapter left for Indianapolis, Illinois to compete at the national level in the Agriscience fair. Mackenzie Lightfoot and her FFA Adviser, Mr. Clay Lightfoot, were the only two that went on this week long trip. While on the road they went on tours and went through museums like the national corvette plant and museum, Oklahoma Bomb site, and Graceland. When they got to Indy, they set up Mackenzie s board so it could be looked at before her interview. An interview is when the participant tells a group of judges about his or her project and then answers questions about the subject. Out of the nation, only 15 get to compete in each division. There are 7 categories, and in each category, there are 4 divisions. The next day, there was an awards luncheon, this is important because this tells the participants the top three finalist. The top 3 are very important because they get to walk the stage in one of the sessions. At this luncheon, Mackenzie placed in the top 3. This meant she got to walk the national stage and be on TV. She placed 3 rd. There were also a lot of open houses so the rest of the convention hall could walk through the projects. During Mackenzie s free time they went to the shopping mall and the career fair where they could look at collages and careers they might like to do in the future. Mackenzie and Mr. Lightfoot came back to New Mexico on Sunday October 23,2016. Congratulations to Mackenzie on this great accomplishment!

3 This past summer, Mackenzie Lightfoot and Joe DeHerrera of the Roy FFA Chapter went to Las Cruses, New Mexico for the New Mexico State FFA Convention. This convention was held on May 31- June 3, 2016. While in Las Cruses, Mackenzie competed in the Agriscience Fair, placing 1 st in her division which qualified her to compete at the national level. Also, while there, they were both voting delegates. This meant that they decided and voted on what the coming year was going to look like. They attended meetings about voting sessions, voted on the talent portion of convention, and elected the 2016-2017 state president and state secretary. Mackenzie and Joe also represented their chapter in District II to elect the district officers for that year. The president of the district officers was also elected to become a state vice president. Good job to Mackenzie for winning your Agriscience category! Good Luck as you move on to nationals. ~Mackenzie Lightfoot Celebrating 85 years of the FFA Creed In 1930, Mickey Mouse made his debut in the New York Mirror newspaper, the first quick-frozen foods were sold in retail stores, and the Athletics (then in Philadelphia) beat the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series but perhaps even more important to FFA members, the Future Farmer Creed written by Erwin Milton Tiffany was adopted as the official creed of the Future Farmers of America, known today as the National FFA Organization. The FFA Creed expresses E.M. Tiffany's strong belief in the industry of agriculture and the core values of citizenship and patriotism. Jackson Tiffany, son of Creed author, E.M. Tiffany, says it gives him "a warm feeling" to know his father's words have touched the lives of so many FFA members over the past 85 years. We believe the FFA Creed will continue to inspire FFA members for many years to come! Inspiration is indeed found in New Mexico FFA District 2 where there were 29 junior high creed speakers and 22 Greenhand FFA members in 9 th or 10 th grade. The qualifying junior high contestants can look forward to the State Competition in February and the qualifying Greenhands have to wait for their State contest during the NM FFA State Convention on the campus of NMSU in June. Qualification for the next level of competition is highly sought after and we are so proud to announce that 100% of the Roy FFA members that competed at the District contest held recently in Logan, NM have advanced to the State level of completion. This is a tremendous accomplishment and you would be hard pressed to find another FFA Chapter in the entire state with 100% state qualifying record. Congratulations to Lane Clavel, 1 st place in the junior high FFA Creed speaking contest followed by Riley Clavel in 2 nd place and rounding out the top 3 is Micah Lightfoot. Congratulations also go to Mackenzie Lightfoot for placing in the top 5 in the Greenhand level of FFA Creed speaking competition. Good luck to all four speakers in their respective level of competition in 2017! ~Micah Lightfoot
