How to... pack for a holiday SPECIALIST INSURANCE Plan your holiday with our handy checklist. Tick off before you fly off!
We ve all been there you jet halfway around the world only to touch down at your beach resort and realise you ve forgotten your favourite bikini. In the excitement and chaos of holiday packing, it s easy to forget things like plug adaptors or local currency, let alone your latest tankini. So plan ahead and print off our handy checklist so you can tick off before you fly off
» the essentials Documentation: Are your documents up to date? Email yourself copies: tickets, passes, travel insurance forms, a valid passport and driving licence (if hiring a car), visas, and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if travelling within Europe, which gives you reduced or free emergency care. Check luggage weights and limits for your flight. Medicine: Ensure your jabs and medication are up to date, and pack hearing aids, contact lenses and spare glasses. Remember to transfer any liquids into 100ml containers for flying. Transport: Arrange airport taxis and/or parking, and transport at the other end. Researching routes in advance will mean you can swap coach or train queues for all-important sightseeing. If you're driving, have a copy of your car breakdown policies too. Money: Pack credit, debit cards, and spare change for phones and taxis. Organise currency or travellers' cheques for each destination and haggle for the best deal. Will your bank charge you for using your card abroad? Jot down emergency contact details for lost or stolen credit cards. Friends and family: Leave a spare house key and copies of your itinerary with a neighbour, including phone numbers just in case. Maps and apps: Pack your mobile phone and check roaming charges. Print an itinerary, with addresses and directions (including the return journey), and a phrase book or app with key phrases such as 'where's the nearest cocktail bar?'! Tech: Pack plug adapters or an extension cord, so you've plenty of charge for those all-important beach selfies!
» the accessories We're all guilty of packing too much! Try to limit yourself to: sleepwear A sun hat is essential t-shirts or vest tops a couple of pairs of shorts one day and evening dress (or trousers) Pack a light jacket or cardigan in case it gets chilly a long and short skirt Going somewhere cold? Pack waterproofs, thermals and specialist sportswear.
» the accessories Underwear: one pair of pants and socks for each day, two bras (a nude, strapless or bandeau one is handy for backless outfits or sheer tops). Toiletries: pack a perfume that doesn't pack a punch - remember the heat will intensify strong aromas - and add plenty of sun cream, after sun (which can double up as a moisturiser), shower gel and deodorant. Add shaving cream, razors, toothbrush and toothpaste, insect repellent, a first aid kit (think burns, bites and blisters), shampoo/conditioner, hair bands, sanitary towels/tampons, a nail file, a comb and a travel mirror. And, who can live without wet wipes? Swimwear: take a couple of pairs of trunks and costumes as well as a beach towel and swim bag. Shoes: one heeled and one flat pair (think comfort for sightseeing, or go for socks and boots if you're hiking), and always pack a couple of flip-flops - they often turn into flimsy-flops. Make up: if you're flying to sunnier climes, lighter formulas work best. And don't forget: tweezers, foundations, concealer, highlighter, powder, blusher, mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick (or a lighter lip tint can be more comfortable in the heat), and cleansers.
» the little luxuries If you can squeeze a few extra luxuries in your bag, they can make all the difference. Just don't try and take them all! Beach basics: Buckets, beach mats/picnic blankets and windbreaks are easy to get hold of at your destination, but if you re travelling by car pack your own, as it will save you money. Frisbee: A great way to keep the kids amused while you top up your tan and enjoy a beachside sangria! Ice packs: They ll keep your drinks cool and (naughty, naughty) help ease sun stroke/burn. Pedicure and manicure: Visit the salon before you go so you look fabulous in your flip-flops, and you can take time off from nail care too. Camera or video camera: Delete old stuff off memory cards so there s plenty of space for your favourite shots. Magazines/books or tablet: For that in-flight entertainment (particularly important for long journeys). Jewellery: Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with all your outfits. Sarong: Useful for covering up if you need to go from the beach to the bar. Face and body scrub: Great for rubbing away the effects of the night before and getting your glow-on. Clutch bag: For those posh nights out.
