ii Introduction The composition of mass stgs durg the mid- to late-seventeenth century as almost entirely the preserve of composers ho orked outsi the circle of the Chapelle Royale, here Louis XIV particular preferred Messe Basse, ith the mass recited quily hile he listened to his composers latest grand mot. ean- Baptiste Boëss, ho served Anne of Austria and Marie-Thérèse, regents of Louis XIII and XIV, proaly rote his masses for performance the convents frequented y the queens, 1 hile Charpentier had connections ith the court ut held no position there, and his masses ere tend for his various employers, cludg the esuits, Mlle Guise, and the Sate Chapelle. A fe masses are ritten the grand mot style, ith divisions for grand and pit choeurs (Formé, Bouzignac, and later Campra); otherise it as Lassus, hose sacred music as reprted y Ballard throughout the seventeenth century, ho as the prcipal fluence on mass stgs. Ballard pulished numerous masses y provcial composers, cludg Gantez (Marseilles), ean Bournonville (Amiens, then Sat Chapelle), and Menault (Rouen, then Notre-Dame): such masses are often a simple imitative style, suited for the limited resources of cathedrals outsi the capital, though evince of seventeenth-century velopments are evint occasional moments of harmonic and melodic terest. Charles d Helfer (d. after 1664) spent his hole career outsi Paris ased as maître musique at Soissons Cathedral, his reputation as a mass composer is reflected y the extensive pulication of his orks after his ath, and his Missa pro Defunctis, pulished 1656, contued to e used up to the osequies of Louis XV 1774. In 1724 Brossard record that Helfer s Missa Deliciae Regum still lights people ith good taste, 2 and he transcied several masses. Although Helfer prefers a severe syllale-to-a-note style, the vocal les ra an elegant melodic charm. Further terest is mataed y variy of scorg (for stance, pairg the upper and loer voices) and texture (expressive moments the text are matched y passages ith sloer harmonic movement laced ith suspensions). The Missa Benedicam Domum as first pulished 1655 and pulished a ne edition 1729. It as transcried y Brossard, ho add a contuo le and a stg of Dome salvum fac regem. The mot mol for the mass is not knon, ut it may have een y Helfer himself (no copies of his Vêpres hymnes l année, avec plusieurs mots (1660) are no extant). Performance There are no dications the source of solo or full dications, ut other composers such as Du Mont and Moulié often clud directions to exploit the scorg contrasts if forces availale permitted (anticipatg the formal structure of grand and pit choeur the Versailles grand mot). Duple mre is prevalent. The duple mres are fed y the predomant unit of melodic movement and rate of harmonic change, possily c.60. Charactersitic of Helfer s ritg is a fluid rhythm, ith the stress of the text often overridg the ar les. In the source ar les are only used spargly here the rhythm falls conveniently duple mre, so care should e taken to follo the flexion of the text. A triple mre is used only once, the Credo at carnatus est : this section leads directly to the duple section, suggestg a relationship een the to, perhaps 2:1 (as implied y the soprano hemiola.61). Several typical ornamental figures are ritten out the music, the most common eg the avant son (anticipation, either a sgle voice or at a harmonic level), port voix (a risg one-note grace note, ith anapaestic unrlay, somimes ith layed resolution), and the accent (a grace-note volvg a change of 1 See ean-baptiste Boëss: Messe du trosième mo transposé; Messe du quatrième mo; Messe du Tiers; and Mots, ed. Paul Gameson (York, York Early Music Press, 2002). 2 Elle fait encor tous les ours les lices tous les gens on goût (Yolan Brossard, La collection Séastien Brossard 1655 1730: Catalogue (Paris, 1994): 88). iii direction from ma note to neighour). The asence of other notated ornaments or dications for does not preclu their clusion, though this ould e impractical for more than one sger to a part. A tremlement, or trill, can e used on the thirds of chords at cances and should eg on the ma note (upper or loer). The simple melodic les of the solo passages could e emellished ith the ornaments mentioned aove, and more Italian ornaments (mentioned French vocal manuals). The tempo should reflect the fact that notated figures are ornamental not melodic, and e sung as if they ere improvised, lightly and free; for stance, the avant son and port voix could e over-dotted. The usually unritten convention of égale is the most characteristic French rhythmic emellishment; it features the slight alteration to the length of certa note pairs, usually the fastest notes the tempo and movg stepise motion. While the pulication from hich this mass has een transcried clus no contuo part, it ould e acceptale to clu one performance. Seventeenth-century French choirs ere often supported y doulg struments, and several prted sources also acknoledge the practice of usg struments the asence of enough sgers, either ith the upper voice accompanied y the organ, or the missg parts played y the organ. 3 It ould not e rong to sg the masses unaccompanied, though if possile an organ asso seguente, follog the loest soundg vocal part, should e used. Editorial procedure Barrg has een regularized. Origal doule ars have een raed. In the source, typically quavers are eamed togher for melismas and separately for sgle syllales: the score they have een eamed accordg to morn use. Extra accintals the source that are redundant morn musical convention are not acknoledged; accintals aove the note are editorial. Punctuation and spellg has een standardised. The unrlay of the Kyrie eleison follos the consistent practice the prted source. Words omitted the source appear italics. Typical of other vocal and organ masses of the period, the Missa Benedicam Domum ss only Agnus Dei I, and the text to Agnus Dei III has een provid y the editor.
