The Legendary Magellan, Chilean Fjords and Antarctica Chilean fjords and Cape Horn - Punta Arena Starting in the Chilean fjords, we set sail south and spend five full days exploring the highlights of Antarctica, where we greet the hatching penguins and arriving seals and whales. This 18-day wildlife expedition continues onto the Falkland Islands, Cape Horn and back to the wild fjords of Chile before ending in Punta Arenas. Depending on the departure date, you could celebrate Christmas Eve on Cape Horn and New Year in Antarctica! Travel Period - 17 December 2017, 02 January 2018 Duration - 18 Days Ship - MS Midnatsol

Journey to destinations where few places on the planet can match the incredible experiences with wildlife and nature Appreciate unique wildlife such as Caracara birds, the first penguin chicks hatching and the arrival of whales and more seals including Weddell seals Be amused by first class edutainment by our expert expedition team Celebrate Christmas the 'Norwegian way' on particular departure dates A er an overnight stay at a hotel in Santiago de Chile, you will meet your expedition ship in Punta Arenas. Then the journey south begins among steep mountains, green valleys teeming with life and even glaciers in the Chilean fjords, before sailing through the extremely narrow Canal Gabriel and into the Garibaldi fjord. Here we take our small boats out for a closer look at the wildlife and the two glaciers at the end of the fjord. If the weather is on our side we might come ashore on Cape Horn on what is actually Christmas Eve. No matter what, we celebrate the Norwegian way on board with a Christmas tree, carols and a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner. Icebergs ahead 2 / 4

Pubs and red buses Turning back we will spend several days at the Falkland Islands experiencing everything from red buses and English pubs in the capital Stanley to sandy white beaches and turquoise waters, old shipwrecks and the bird paradise Carcass Island. The itinerary This is an expedition where the elements rule, and the weather, wind and ice conditions will determine our schedule. Safety is paramount and the captain will decide the final sailing itinerary during the voyage. Hence, this itinerary is just an indication of what you can experience and why every expedition with Hurtigruten is unique. December 2017 and January 2018 Departs From Santiago, Chile DAY 1 Taste of Santiago Location: Santiago de Chile After arriving in Santiago de Chile, you can explore the city for yourself before spending the night at a hotel.

Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. Mountains of the Andes chain can be seen from most points in the city. DAY 2 Midnatsol awaits Location: Santiago de Chile and Punta Arenas The following day our flight takes you to Punta Arenas, and once on board MS Midnatsol we will have a welcome-on-board dinner.

DAY 3 The Magellanic penguin Location: Chilean fjords/tierra del Fuego Next on our agenda is sailing past the small island called Isla Tucker. It is famous for its colony of Magellanic penguins, birds, dolphins and sea lions. The captain and his crew show their navigation skills as we sail through the narrow Canal Gabriel.

DAY 4 Endless wilderness Location: Chilean fjords/tierra del Fuego Gazing will be your favorite activity when we reach the Chilean fjords. They are extremely deep and surrounded by very high mountains. You might not see a single person on shore, just endless wilderness. In one of the fjords we take our small boats out for a closer look at the nature and the wildlife. If the weather is good we will go ashore on Cape Horn. This area is known for high seas and challenging conditions and if we make it ashore this will be a great achievement.

DAY 5 Norwegian Christmas in the South Location: Chilean fjords and Cape Horn When ranking the mythical places on earth, Cape Horn is high on the list. Before the Panama Canal, seafarers had to pass this infamous rocky island in order to cross from one side of the Americas to the other. We will do our best to make a landing on Cape Horn however, this is an area known for high seas and challenging conditions and if we make it this will be a great achievement. On one of the voyages this will be Christmas Eve, and we celebrate the Norwegian way with a Christmas tree, carols and a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner.

DAYS 6-7 Where two oceans meet Location: The Drake Passage We spend a couple of days cruising the Drake Passage which connects the southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Here the warm water from the north meets the cold, less salty water from the south. This makes the ocean particularly rich in nutrients and is home to unique marine life. From the deck you will soon see Antarctic penguins, icebergs and maybe even whales. Whilst we cross the sea towards Antarctica, a number of presentations will be given on board about various aspects of the history and wildlife of the Antarctic. You will also be given a thorough introduction to the current guidelines for visiting this vulnerable environment.

DAY 8-13 Come ashore for wildlife galore Location: Antarctica Come ashore to explore the impressive Antarctic scenery, penguins and fur seals. From deck there are lots of chances of seeing whales as well. Enjoy close encounters with wildlife and glaciers, old whaling stations and relics. You are now in one of the most remote areas of the world, but trust us: you will not be bored for one single second! Weather, wind and ice conditions dictate our programme and schedule. Safety is always the first priority and the captain will decide the final sailing schedule during the voyage. While in Antarctica, we will attempt to land on several sites. Among the places we will see are South Shetlands and Cuverville Island, home to a large colony of chinstrap penguins. We may also explore Neko Harbour, beautifully located in the inner part of Andvord Bay; Paradise Harbour which got its descriptive name from the whalers during the last century; and Wilhelmina Bay or Whale-mina Bay as it is called due to its spectacular scenery and humpback whales in December.

Join the expedition team and explore Antarctica with landings that take you close to thousands of penguins and seals, enjoy kayaking and visits to the most interesting places. On board we offer several lectures and scientific experiments for Young Explorers Antarctica. DAY 14 Photo Little England Location: Falkland Islands Having just been in Antarctica it might seem a bit surreal to arrive in a town that looks like a miniature England, with red phone boxes, red buses and English pubs.

DAY 15 Stanley and surrounds Location: Falkland Islands Stanley is the capital on the Falkland Islands. Roam the city streets or join one of the excursions to explore the wilderness and wildlife in the surroundings.

DAY 16 Bird lovers, rejoice Location: Falkland Islands We continue with our exciting on-board programme in the evening. Bird lovers will rejoice as we reach Carcass Island. This is a bird paradise with a rich variety of ducks, geese, penguins, albatrosses, caracaras and wrens. It is also one of the few islands down here with trees. We use our small boats go ashore for exploring, hiking or take a closer look at all the birds.

DAY 17 'Strait' back to South America Location: Magellan Strait As we complete the loop of the Magellan Strait we will have a recap of everything we have explored, seen and discovered on this trip. We celebrate our experiences, new friendships, new knowledge and our joint expedition spirit with a farewell dinner and party.

DAY 18 Time to say goodbye Location: Punta Arenas / Santiago de Chile Arriving in Punta Arenas, it s time to say goodbye. Your journey home continues with your flight to Santiago de Chile.
