DESTINATION INFORMATION FOR MARCO POLO JOURNEYS NEPAL & TIBET: FROM THE JUNGLE TO THE ROOF OF THE WORLD What You Need to Know Before You Go PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION In order to enter Nepal and Tibet as a citizen of the United States, you will need: A signed, valid passport, a tourist visa for Nepal* and Tibet Permit/China Visa**. Your passport must remain valid for at least 6 months beyond the completion of your trip. It is also imperative that your passport has enough blank visa pages available for entry and exit stamps. * A tourist visa for Nepal may be obtained prior to departure or upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Please ensure that you are carrying a valid passport, two passport-size photos and the payment of the visa fee (currently USD $25 per person for a 15-day multiple entry visa) in cash, which you need to present upon arrival in Kathmandu. (Requirements and fees are subject to change.) In order to enter Tibet from Nepal, a Tibet permit/china visa must be obtained in Kathmandu prior to your arrival in Tibet. In order to obtain the pre-authorization arrangements to obtain these documents locally in Kathmandu, please complete the Important Tibet Permit/China Visa Information for Travellers Entering Tibet from Nepal form included in your pre-travel materials and return it, along with a scanned color copy of the identification pages of your passport to A&K s Downers Grove office by email at operations@abercrombiekent.com. If you do not have a copy of this form, please contact A&K so that one can be sent to you. Note: Please do not apply for a China visa ahead of time. If you have an existing China visa in your passport, this will be canceled by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. If you are continuing on in Mainland China after visiting Tibet, please provide A&K with a copy of your flight itinerary, hotel contact information and exact dates of travel to ensure that, if required, a separate China visa be obtained for you. The standard China visa obtained in Kathmandu is a single-entry visa valid for between 10-15 days. On arrival in Kathmandu, you will need to have the following documentation on hand to obtain your Tibet Permit/China Visa: Original passport (must be the same passport as passport photocopy submitted to A&K prior to departure). Two (2) full-color passport sized photos. $200 cash USD for U.S. passport holders for the China visa fee in crisp, new bills. Currency that is more than several years old and/or extremely wrinkled, torn or faded bills will not be accepted. For non U.S. passport holders, the fee is $115 USD per person. Visa fees are subject to change without notice. Contact our partner, VisaCentral for easy, efficient passport and visa processing. Call 844 823 1224 and reference A&K s account number 73001 or visit our Travel Store at www.abercrombiekent.com/travel_store. If you are not a citizen of the United States, your entry requirements may vary. Please consult the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the country or countries you will be visiting.

CONSULAR INFORMATION The U.S. State Department provides Country Specific Information sheets for every country in the world, as well as Travel Alerts and Warnings. Find this information by calling 888 407 4747 or 202 501 4444 or online at travel.state.gov. CURRENCY In Nepal, the unit of currency is the Nepalese Rupee. Major credit cards (MasterCard and Visa) are accepted in large city hotels and a few large stores, but outside major centers, cash may be required. American Express cards have limited acceptance. ATM access is available in Kathmandu. The unit of currency in China (including Tibet) is the Renminbi. The only place in Tibet to officially change RMB back into foreign currency is the central Lhasa branch of the Bank of China. You cannot change RMB into dollars at Gongkar airport. Several ATMs in Lhasa and Shigatse accept foreign cards. Credit cards are generally not accepted in Lhasa. The Bank of China accepts Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, American Express and Plus for cash advances. Check before trying your card as many ATMs can only be used by domestic account holders. The maximum amount you can withdraw per transaction is Y2000 with the Bank of China. Make your transaction during bank hours to avoid problems. Exchange currency only at authorized outlets such as exchange kiosks, banks and hotels. Only exchange what you feel you will need while visiting. Save all receipts from any currency transaction. You may be asked to produce them when you exit the country, and they are required if you intend to reconvert local currency. We suggest travelling with some U.S. dollars to be exchanged for local currency and at least two major credit cards. If you have a Chip and PIN card, be careful to shield your number from view while entering it on a keypad; never disclose your PIN verbally. Notify your credit card company of your travel plans prior to your departure to avoid any fraud concerns. HEALTH It is important to familiarize yourself with any potential health issues or concerns related to your destination, and so we strongly recommend consulting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for up-to-date information on required and recommended vaccines and medications. Visit them online at wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel or call 800 232 4636. Plan to visit your doctor or local travel clinic at least 4-6 weeks before departure to allow time for any vaccinations to take effect or to fill any prescriptions. Required Vaccination A yellow fever vaccination is required to enter Nepal and Tibet only if you are arriving from or have transited through a yellow fever endemic area in South America or Africa. The CDC provides a current list of all affected countries. If vaccination for yellow fever is necessary, you must carry an International Certificate of Vaccination provided by your physician; without it, you may be denied entry. If your physician advises against receiving the vaccination because of your personal medical history, he or she can provide you with the necessary documentation for the country(ies) that you are visiting. High altitudes are a feature of travel in Nepal and Tibet. You may experience altitude sickness. Please consult your healthcare provider for suggestions on prevention and treatment. WEATHER The weather in Nepal varies by region and altitude. In the north, summers are cool and winters severe, while in the southern part of the country, summers are tropical and winters are mild. Nepal has five major seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter. Monsoon season

lasts from approximately the end of June to the middle of September. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; winter temperatures drop to freezing, with a high level of snowfall in the mountains, while summer can be blisteringly hot. Summer and late spring temperatures range from 83ºF in the hill regions to more than 104ºF in the southern Terai region. The valley of Kathmandu has a pleasant climate ranging from 67-81ºF in summer to 36-68ºF in winter. In general, March through June and mid-september to November tend to be fairly dry and pleasant throughout the country. Tibet has similar seasons to China, though with lower temperatures due to the higher altitudes. Winters (October to March) can be severe with frequent hard frosts and snow. The higher you go the colder it gets and winds can be fierce. Temperatures in Lhasa average about 32 F during the season. Summers (May to September) have warm days up to 68 F with strong sunshine although nighttime temperatures are cooler averaging in the mid-40s. At higher elevations even summer days can be chilly. The thin air does not block or hold in heat and temperatures can vary greatly during the day. During spring and autumn you need to be prepared for four seasons in one day, including the possibility of snowfall. Use a website such as weather.com to find average temperatures and rainfall during your travel times. ELECTRICAL SERVICE Nepal and Tibet both supply electricity at 220 volts / 50 hertz. Be sure to pack a universal travel adapter. You can purchase one through A&K s Travel Store at usa.thetraveloutfitter.com/index.php WHAT TO PACK Daytime attire: Nepal and Tibet s varied topography and high altitudes create weather conditions which can change radically in the course of the day, and between daytime and nighttime. Bring fabrics that breathe and you can wear in layers. Women may feel most comfortable in skirts or long trousers, as opposed to short skirts or shorts. When visiting national parks and wildlife reserves it is advisable to wear clothes of earthy colors (browns and greens) to blend in with the surroundings. This program visits temples and religious sites that require modest dress to enter. Guests are advised to pack clothing that covers knees, shoulders, and upper arms for select visits. Guests will be required to remove shoes when entering sacred sites. The mountain roads of Tibet are very rough: an inflatable pillow or stadium cushion can help soften the bumps. Women may want to pack a supportive sports bra. Evening attire: Somewhat smarter, but still casual, clothing is appropriate for evening dining in city restaurants. Formal clothing is not necessary. Comfortable, walking shoes with low or no heels Carry a pair of socks, since shoes must be removed when entering certain religious buildings. Sweater and/or lightweight jacket (preferably windproof.) Lightweight raincoat or poncho A heavier jacket, warm clothes, hat, gloves, socks and thermals

Warm sleepwear Swimming suit (optional - swimming pools tend to be unheated or closed in winter months.) Sunglasses, sunscreen lip balm and a sunhat Mosquito repellent Optional items: lightweight binoculars small flashlight and extra batteries, collapsible walking stick, universal basin plug, travel alarm. Ear plugs are suggested to help block out noise as you sleep in Nepal. Nepal has a large canine population which tends to bark excessively in the nighttime hours. Simple first-aid kit Prescriptions and medications (We recommend you carry these in their original bottles and/or packaging.) Carry adequate amounts of medications required as these may not be available locally. Charging cables for electronics Voltage converter and adapter plugs Note: Laundry service is available at your hotels. Baggage Restrictions On Internal Air flights within Nepal, each passenger is limited to one piece of checked baggage with a maximum weight of approximately 44 pounds (20 kilograms) in Economy Class and approximately 66 pounds (30 kilograms) in Business Class. For carry-on baggage, passengers are limited to one piece of baggage with a maximum weight of approximately 11 pounds (5 kilograms) in both Economy and Business Class. As a preventative measure, it is recommended that all luggage be secured with a TSA approved lock.

What You Need to Know When You Arrive TIME ZONES Nepal operates on Greenwich Mean Time + 5 hours and 45 minutes. At 9:00 a.m. in Nepal, it is: EST CST MST PST 10:15 p.m. the previous day 9:15 p.m. the previous day 8:15 p.m. the previous day 7:15 p.m. the previous day Tibet operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) + 8 hours At 9:00 a.m. in Tibet, it is: EST CST MST PST 8:00 p.m. the previous day 7:00 p.m. the previous day 6:00 p.m. the previous day 5:00 p.m. the previous day LANGUAGE Nepal's official language is Nepali. Closely related to Hindi, it is spoken as a mother tongue by about 60% of Nepal's population, and as a second language by the remaining 40%, who speak one of Nepal's other 68 languages as their primary tongue. Tibet s official language is the Lhasa dialect of Tibetan, a member of the Tibeto-Burman subfamily of the Sino-Tibetan language group. In practice, many different dialects are spoken as is Mandarin Chinese. English speakers are rare. Please consult with your guide on translations, if needed. AIRPORT INFORMATION At most international airports, passengers cannot be met inside secured areas. This includes Immigration, Customs halls and Baggage Claim. Your A&K representative will greet you as you exit these restricted areas; look for the person holding the distinctive yellow A&K signboard. Before departing, remember to tag your checked luggage with the A&K luggage tags provided. These brightly colored markers help identify you and your luggage quickly. PROTECTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS Use the safes where available in your accommodations to secure your valuables, especially passports, medications, jewelry, money and electronics. If you must carry valuables, keep them on your person at all times. Be mindful of your surroundings and take extra caution in crowds.

Photocopy the personal information pages of your passport; leave one copy with a family member or friend and pack another separately from the passport itself. You may want to scan and email a copy to yourself for easy, online access. This will help speed up the replacement process. As a preventative measure, it is recommended that all luggage be secured with a TSA approved lock. ETIQUETTE AND PHOTOGRAPHY Please don t encourage begging by giving sweets or money to local people who may approach you on the street. Recognized charities often have collection boxes in hotels. We recommend that you make any donations here, where you can be assured that the funds will be properly used. Unless you are shooting a crowded public scene, it is considered courteous to ask permission before taking pictures of local people, especially small children. Please be respectful of local people who do not wish to be photographed. Photography is not permitted at some locations, which may include government buildings, museums, art galleries, private houses, etc. These areas are usually clearly marked. Please do not take photographs in monasteries before asking permission. Some monasteries do not permit flash photography. If in doubt, please ask. Be sure to pack ample amounts of batteries and memory cards or film for your camera and video equipment, along with the appropriate charging cables. A dustproof case or sealable plastic bags and lens brush are also recommended. FOOD AND DRINK Do not use tap water for drinking or brushing teeth. Even purified water in open containers should be avoided. It is always preferable and safer to use only bottled or canned water. Outside of Kathmandu along trekking routes at teahouses, meat is not always offered with meals. Regardless of precautions, changes in water and diet can result in mild abdominal upsets and nausea. To prevent serious illness, avoid suspect foods such as uncooked vegetables, peeled fruit, un-pasteurized milk and milk products. Beware of any food or drink sold by street vendors. SHOPPING Many A&K guests enjoy the chance to purchase items that reflect their destination, and so as a courtesy, your guide may recommend a particular shop or arrange a shopping visit. Please note, however, that these recommendations should not be taken as A&K s endorsement of the shop, merchandise and/or pricing. You assume all responsibility for any transactions that take place, including shipping arrangements that are made. The decision to shop while travelling is a personal choice and shopping is never compulsory. If at any point during your journey you feel pressured to shop or make purchases, please immediately discuss the matter with your Abercrombie & Kent representative. To avoid disappointment, we suggest the following guidelines: Compute the exchange rate and thoroughly review credit card receipts before signing. Take your purchases home with you whenever possible. Airfreight can take many months and actual shipping charges can be excessive. Customs delays, fees and regulations can further complicate the issue. If you choose to ship purchases, we suggest taking a picture of the item(s) and/or marking them in some way to ensure you receive what was purchased. For

example, you could write your name on the backside of a rug. Determine if your shipment will be delivered door-to-door or to the nearest customs facility, as is often the case. Most goods shipped from other countries to the United States are subject to Customs duty. Duty taxes, if applicable, are paid as you re-enter the United States. Regardless of assurances by merchants, these cannot be prepaid on your behalf. Currently, each person is entitled to an $800 duty-free exemption, however, may only bring one liter of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars. Keep all sales receipts for items purchased throughout your trip and try to pack all items that you will need to declare together. This will ease the Customs process upon re-entry into the U.S. Consult the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for more details. http://www.cbp.gov/ COMMUNICATIONS Contact your cellular telephone provider to determine if your phone operates on the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and what, if any, activation may be required. If your phone is not GSM-enabled, you may find that renting a phone specifically designed for use overseas is the most practical option. In Asia, reception on any cell phone can be unreliable and unpredictable. In some locations, transmission is not possible at all. OF SPECIAL NOTE Additional copies of your passport photo are sometimes requested internally for local forms; we suggest that you carry an additional 2 or 3 in the event these are required. Visitors to national parks and wildlife reserves should note that your guides are extremely knowledgeable and successful trackers, encountering wildlife is unpredictable. (In tiger reserves, don t expect to see tigers every day.)
