Page 2 M.W. Bulletin 26 November 2014 Rhonda s Report (for 26 November) No report this week. Have a great week. Kindest regards Rhonda No photo s this week. PHOTO S FROM LAST WEEK MEMBERS ANNOUNCEMENTS Youth Services Report I am very pleased to report that one of our sponsored students, Shailja Sharma was successful in winning the grand final of the Rotary Four Way Test Speaking Competition. Shailja s topic was Racism. A fundamental requirement was that the speakers link at least two of the Four Way Test components within their presentations. The final was held at the Village Green Hotel, hosted by the Rotary Club of Glen Waverley. I represented our Club, and Shailja was supported by her teacher Christine Pappas, and Shailja s mother. Judges were all long time members and District Governors of either the Toastmasters or the Rostrum organizations. All were Rotarians. The standard of the presentations was outstanding and the final result was only declared after the chief judge exercised a casting vote as a tiebreaker. Shailja was presented with a cheque and an impressive certificate, and was congratulated by all present. Terry Roche L-R - District Organiser Marlene Sinclair, Runners up Shannon Lowden and Candice Farrugia-Roberts, The Winner Shailja Sharma and Terry Roche.

Page 3 M.W. Bulletin 26 November 2014 ROMAC Hello ROMAC volunteers. It is now one month since Bradley Bola and his mother Nellie arrived from PNG, hosted by Teresa and Michael Cox in Vermont. The fact that this is the third time the Cox family has hosted Bradley and Nellie means that they are Friends of the Family and contact has been maintained throughout Bradley s life. Such friendship and support is wonderful and well on par with the technical and medical support that is provided at reduced rates or pro-bono without which even fewer children could be helped. Since our last news on Sunday 16 th November, the first post-operative assessment since leaving hospital has been carried out by Prof. Andrew Heggie on Monday morning. We had an early start and with our MYKI cards topped up, it was off to the city and Parliament Station. An interesting underground and escalating experience for Bradley. A successful check up with follow up appointments scheduled with X rays ( just to check for loose screws) and to enable him to get through the airport security on the way back to PNG, Bradley was once again the TV news item for SBS News with Sarah Arbo asking the questions. This took up the morning. We will let you know when the screening date is programmed (delayed due to the Chinese President being in Tasmania). Gaynor is arranging an assessment with ophthalmologist Dr Elder as to what might be done to further straighten Bradley s eye in some 12 months time if required. Lunch and a trip to Docklands on the tram then the train back to Mitcham made it a full day. Next check up 26 th November. Gaynor has also written to the Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club as Bradley is a fan and keen to meet Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Will Chambers but will be happy to meet the whole team. We hope we can make this happen in the next few weeks for Bradley. We would love to see some other ROMAC volunteer faces visit as mine is wearing out (check out the selfie) and Bradley needs exercise during the recovery period. The final act will be the removal of the metal supports currently holding the new jaw and facial reconstruction in place which will be in about 4 weeks time then it is back to PNG for this wonderful young man, TV star and budding Doctor. But first things first. Promote, publicise and fund raise so ROMAC can help other children across Oceania. Best wishes to all and especially Graeme Chester in South America. Norm Casey Acting Chairman D9810 ROMAC Committee OAKLEIGH MARKET UPDATE We had a very successful Oakleigh market this week with over $2600 raised. Oakleigh club have donated 10 wheelchairs to the local Hospital, funded directly by the market. So it is our local community that will be impacted if the market closes. The Save our Market Petition is growing with, it is estimated, over 4000 signatures to date. I encourage you to sign the petition if you haven t already. The critical decisions will be made at a meeting with Council around 7 th December. Ed CONGRATULATIONS & CELEBRATIONS 26 November 2 December: None this week.
