2015 TUBER SALE WILL BE A ONE DAY SALE! Saturday April 11 9:00 am Sat. 9:00 am to 10:00 am 9:00 am the front desk. APRIL 12, 2014 APRIL 13, 2014 7:00-9:00 - Put up tables and place tubers For Details Call: 7:00-9:30 9:00-10:00 - MEMBERS ONLY SALE Carole Rollie 778-571-2370 10:00-4:00 - Public Sale 4:00-5:00 - Clean up by all members Tina McNabb 604-572-8981 Norm Sharp 604-589-0463 member s sales IMPORTANT Please try and attend the March Meeting if you are selling tubers and you have not been contacted by Carole about the barcode system. She will go over any questions you may have. She can set you up with a template for your labels if you don t have your own. Also there will be a hand on demonstration of the new cash registers for anyone who would like volunteer to run them. We also need volunteers to assist the cashiers with bagging. 3

All member who are selling tubers, would you please give Tina a list of what you might be selling so she can set up the pictures boards ahead of time. Submission of lists can be given to her at the March meeting or you can email them or even phone her up until April 9th or 10th. We are still in need of photos for the picture boards. If you have any you can email them to Tina McNabb at themcnabbs@telus.net or load them on DVD. We are also looking for volunteers to work at our sales desks at our tuber sale. If you would like to help out let Tina, Norm or Carole know. We also need plastic bags for buyers to gather their purchases. Please bring these on the day of our sale. CORRECT WAY TO LABEL TUBERS Bonaventure AA Giant Formal Dec. Bronze Tina McNabb 604-572-8981 5ft Tall $4.00 This is an example of a label with a photo and the new barcode. If you are handwriting your labels, the barcode can be printed on avery labels and stuck to either your label or to the bag. 1. The size should be a minimum of 4" x 2" 2. Try and put some kind of identifying colour or symbol (I use the coloured squares at the top) on the label, this makes it easy for pickup at the end of the day. You do not have to use the colour you were assigned in the past if you are using computer generated labels. 3. You no longer need to put your seller number on the label, it is in the bar code. However you still need to put the price on the label for the public to see. 4. The price goes down in the right bottom corner. The prices is determined on the 2015 Price List. 5. On left side can go either a photo and description or just the description. First dahlia name, size, the form, the colour and the height it grows. Again all this information is on the 2015 Price List. 6. In the left hand bottom corner your name and phone number. This is so a buyer can contact you if they have any concerns about the tuber they purchased. 7. Lastly, please attach your label to the OUTSIDE of the bag. This makes it easier to view the tuber inside the bag. If you need a particular photo for your tag, I have a very extensive dahlia photo library and can send you what you need if I have it. Important: Please make sure there is an eye on your tuber before you bring it to the sale. 4

Council of Garden Clubs Fall Meeting The B.C. Council fall meeting was held on October 18, 2014. Reports were received from the executive. The council currently has 185 active clubs, societies and community gardens representing over 12,000 individuals. There were representatives at the meeting from as far away as the Kootenays. There was notice made that there will be two motions to change the constitution at the AGM in 2015. Historically the past president has been appointed to chair the nominating committee for the term following the past presidency. We will be voting on changing that to allow the executive board to appoint a nominations chair. It was felt that this added expectation following the completion of the past president s term is onerous and does not give the executive board flexibility when appointing the nominating chair. For me the highlight of the meeting was the short presentation from the scholarship recipient. It reminded us all how important supporting horticultural education is. Last year the BC Council was able to distribute $8,900 in scholarships to deserving students throughout the province. Please remember that anyone can make a tax deductible donation at any time. Following a very nice lunch, Des Kennedy read from his most recent book. He described garden clubs to a T and had us all rolling in laughter. He described the harried president, the bespectacled treasurer and the ladies making the tea found at all garden clubs with great humour. And finally, a tech expert showed us all how to set up a garden club Facebook page. From the show of hands, I was surprised to see that at least half of the garden clubs have a Facebook page and it is definitely and important way to promote garden clubs. Does anyone in the VDS want to consider hosting a VDS page? You do no need to be identified personally on the page but Facebook does require a registered person to host the page. It would certainly be beneficial in promoting the club, our tuber sale and annual show. Betty Girard Attention all exhibitors Please look thru your show supplies and return any excess items at the March meeting. Specifically, if you have changed your exhibitor status and have extra tags, or if you have more tags than you need for 2015, please return these so that they can be returned to the VDS inventory. The show committee needs to notify the Federation of required supplies in early March and we want to order appropriate numbers of tags etc. Thanks! Betty 5
