In XII-XV centuries, Surami was owned by the hereditary governors (Eristavs), who took the Surname of Surameli. In the XVII-XVIII centuries the fortress was reinforced and was used during the battles of Prince Givi Amilahvari with the Persians, and then was the base of Russians in the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774. Since 1801, Surami began to develop as a climate health resort. The premises of the complex go 50 meters deep into the rock and rise to a height of eight floors. Secret passages connecting the rooms, irrigation system and other facilities were preserved. In the center of the monastery there is the main temple in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The temple is covered with a box vault (on the arches) and decorated with pilasters, on the walls there are unique frescoes (including images of king George III and Queen Tamar, 1180s). The frescoes of the Dormition of the God Mother, the Ascension of the Lord and the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ are of great historical importance and value. The ensemble of the monastery Vardzia was created mainly in 1156-1205, during period of reign of king George III and his daughter Queen Tamara. In 1283, devastating earthquake occurred in Samtskhe, as a result, a layer up to 15 meters thick separated from the rock and fell into the river Mtkvari. Up to two thirds of the complex was destroyed or severely damaged, many rooms were exposed. Thus, Vardzia lost its defensive significance. In the late 13th - early 14th centuries, during the reign of the prince of Samtskhe Beka Djakeli, the monastery was restored and completed, in particular, the bell tower was built outside. Currently, the cave monastery of Vardzia is one of the main tourist attractions of Georgia. In 2005, the question was raised about including the complex in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
