2010 AEDC is pleased to present the Anchorage Quarterly Economic Indicators Report for the second quarter of 2010. This report summarizes recently updated data from the Anchorage Economic Indicators Database, which tracks more than 25 different measures of economic activity in Anchorage.

Quarterly Employment Average monthly employment in Anchorage fell by 200 jobs from the second quarter of 2009 to the second quarter of 2010, a decline of one-tenth of a percent. The average monthly job count for the second quarter of 2010 was 152,000. The largest losses were in the transportation/warehouse/ utilities sector (down 400 jobs) and wholesale trade (down 300 jobs). Excludes farm employment, business owners, self-employed persons (including fishermen), unpaid volunteers or family help, and private household workers. Average monthly earnings for Anchorage jobs rose 2.7 percent to $4,121. The number of passenger aircraft landings increased by 2.4 percent over the same period. People Mover Fixed Route Riders,, 2005-2010 Source: Anchorage People Mover People Mover Ridership Ridership on People Mover s fixed bus routes decreased from 1.10 million in the second quarter of 2009 to 1.07 million in the second quarter of 2010, a decrease of 2.9 percent. Single Family Housing Unit Sales The average sales price of a single family house in Anchorage rose from $323,126 in the second quarter of 2009 to $325,708 in the second quarter of 2010, an increase of 0.8 percent. Number of Single Family Housing Units Sold,, 2005-2010 Source: Alaska Multiple Listing Service Building Permit Values Total building permit values, which include residential, commercial, and government construction, fell from $130.0 million in the second quarter of 2009 to $103.4 million in the second quarter of 2010, a decline of 20 percent. Commercial building permit values dropped 29 percent, from $64.8 million to $46.2 million. Residential building permit values rose 20 percent, from $40.9 million to $49.1 million. Room Rentals Gross revenue from room rentals, an indicator of lodging activity in Anchorage, increased 14 percent from the second quarter of 2009 to the second quarter of 2010. Consumer Price Index Anchorage Consumer Price Index, 1st Half, 2005-2010 Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics The Anchorage Consumer Price Index rose from 190.0 in the first half of 2009 to 194.8 in the first half of 2010, an increase of 2.5 percent. The U.S. Consumer Price Index rose 2.1 percent over the same period, from 213.1 to 217.5.
