The Caravaner Silent Valley as Hosted by the Firesiders September 2015 Surf s Up was the theme for the Lazy Daze Caravan at Silent Valley. It was hosted by the Firesiders. We had 38 members in camp, 2 First Timers, Jim and Grace Beckum and Dave and Jan Benney both from Fullerton. The Shaners hosted one guest. There were 2 rattle snakes that decided to visit us, but the Rangers gently picked them up and sent them home on the other side of the mountain. On Friday we had Dickey s BBQ, it was fantastic and then topping off the evening was entertainment by the Silent Valley Boys, who played some songs we probably never heard of but certainly got a real laugh with the lyrics. Thanks to the Entertainment Committee for the work they did. Saturday s Washer Toss was exciting; Darlene Johnson and Ruben Pasillas were undefeated to win the Tournament. This was Rubens first win for a button! The hot dog cookout was a lot of fun. We had about 6 grills going and everyone brought a dish to share. We were all stuffed but still made room for S mores provided by Sharon Turner. Thanks to her two granddaughters who helped with the making of the S mores. The weather, what more can we say, it was perfect. Hope you all have a fun and safe summer and we look forward to seeing you on September 16-20 at the Ventura Fair Grounds, Hosted by the Backscratchers. Get out and practice your kite flying for the event to be held at Ventura. The Firesiders 1

MEETING OLD FRIENDS by Bob & Frances Smith It was great meeting up with John and Catherine Mailliard in Oregon. They attended the Northwest Lazy Daze Group and then came to Lakeside to visit their long time friends, Vaughn and Martha Rains. While they were in Lakeside we were in the Sunset Bay State Park in Charleston, near Coos Bay. John and Catherine drove to pick us up on Sunday, August 2nd and we headed north on Highway 101 and met their friends for fresh fish and chips in Winchester Bay. The restaurant was on a small boat and moved when anyone walked, Catherine said we were on a cheap cruise for lunch. After lunch the four of us headed toward the dunes, unfortunately they had a Dunes Fest which was ending and the traffic was horrendous. We had to turn back because half of one lane was filled with cars putting air back in their tires. We then went to the Umpqua Lighthouse and visited their museum. We then went to Lakeside to see the Rains log cabin, really a two story log house they build themselves. Their house is set on 40 wooded acres in the hills and looks down on what they call the Ten Mile Lake. Catherine mentioned that they have had a bear with two cubs, deer, and a cougar that came down to their place. They fed us a great steak dinner and all the fixings. After dinner John and Catherine brought us back to our campsite. It was truly great to see John and Catherine again. They said to tell everyone HI. 5
