From To Florida 2019
From Space to Sea Outline The From Space to Sea tour is based in Florida, USA and takes place in the first two weeks of the mid-year break, 24 May 2019 to 6 June 2019. The trip is aimed at students in Year 1 to Year 4. The first phase of the trip is a three-day Space Camp at Kennedy Space Centre, close to Cape Canaveral which develops STEM skills in students. The second phase is ecology based with students exploring and interacting with the aquatic environment found in Florida, including the Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. Trip Outline Space The students spend three days at Kennedy Space Centre, close to Cape Canaveral where they are encouraged to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills through exciting educational adventures that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Students experience, imagine and interact through brand-new immersive simulators in the new Astronaut Training Experience Center, tours of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and by solving everyday challenges faced by astronauts. This program is an inspiring three days of educational fun and enriching space-related activities. Space Camp Activities Train as the next generation of space explorers in the all-new Astronaut Training Experience. Land, walk and drive on Mars through virtual and motion simulation, and conduct a spacewalk in a microgravity experience. Live and work on Mars for the day in Mars Base 1. Work together to solve base operations emergencies, program robots to optimize solar energy, and sustain life in the Botany Lab. Tour exhibits and attractions throughout the visitor complex and encounter everyday challenges of astronauts and engineers through hands-on activities and experiments. Sea After the Space phase is complete, the trip moves to Miami to experience the Everglades and Atlantic Ocean ecosystems. While travelling from Orlando to Miami, the students will experience deep sea drift fishing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale in a private charter boat. Target species will be Snapper, Trigger Fish, Grunts and Amberjacks.
The students will then spend a day in the unique Everglades National Park. Students will engage in a guided tour of the ecosystem and learn about the flora and fauna of the area. They will learn about the role of alligators to the ecosystem and be able to see them up close in an alligator show. Students will then get on the water and experience exploring the Everglades on an airboat. The trip will then head to the Bahamas for the day where students will experience sandy beaches and warm turquoise waters. The main activity will be snorkeling under professional supervision; however this is dependent on the weather. In the case of inclement weather students will undertake other activities. The island is yet to be decided but will be either Grand Bahama or Bimini. To complete the experience students will spend the day at the Seaquarium for a school field trip. They will enjoy marine mammal shows with dolphins and sea lions. They will also see world class exhibits of manatees, sea turtles, penguins and rays. They will learn about wildlife rescue and marine animal care at the Conservation Outpost. In addition to these experiences students will also have a trip to Universal s Islands of Adventure, lunch at Palm Beach, a sight-seeing boat ride along the Miami coastline and time to explore and shop in Miami. Flights and Accommodation The school is expecting to use Qatar Airways for all flights. While in Miami the group will stay at the University of Miami in their conference accommodation with the group having breakfast and dinner served. While we are in Orlando the group will stay at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in their conference accommodation. There is no catering at UCF so the group will be preparing breakfast and dinner themselves in the camp kitchen under the direction of the teachers. Cost It is anticipated that the cost of this trip is S$4990. While it is hoped that this price will not change it is dependent on number of students, airfares, exchange rates and 2019 price changes. Detailed Schedule Day 1, 25 May Arrive in Miami, USA The trip will use Qatar Airways flying via Doha. The plane leaves Singapore at 02:20 and arrives at 15:00 at Miami International Airport. The group is then picked up by charter coach and taken to the University of Miami for a one night stay. Day 2, 26 May Miami to Orlando In the morning we will enjoy a scenic tour of Miami from an open air bus. After this the group will travel to Palm Beach where we will stop and have lunch. The charter bus will then take us up to our accommodation at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Day 3, 27 May Space camp Space Camp runs from 9:00am to 3:30pm each day, with a charter bus taking the group to and from Kennedy Space Centre (KSC) each day. Day 4, 28 May Space Camp Space Camp Day 2 - Live and work on Mars for the day in Mars Base 1. Day 5, 29 May Space Camp Space Camp Day 3 - Tour exhibits and attractions throughout the visitor complex and encounter everyday challenges of astronauts and engineers through hands-on activities and experiments. Day 6, 30 May Universals Island of Adventure To celebrate finishing Space Camp the group will enjoy a day at Universal s Island of Adventure, Orlando. Day 7, 31 May Deep Sea Fishing The Sea phase of our trip begins on this day. A charter bus takes us to Fort Lauderdale and we board the Mary B III for a 4 hour fishing charter for students to experience deep sea drift fishing. On the completion of the fishing charter, we will return to our accommodation at the University of Miami.
Day 8, 1 June Everglades A charter bus will take the group into the Everglades National park. Students will learn about the Everglades eco-system and see an alligator show where they learn the important role alligators play. They will then experience a cruise on an airboat to see the wildlife. Day 9, 2 June - Bahama visit Today the group takes a ferry across to the Bahamas to experience a tropical island. We will have several hours in the Bahamas during which students can swim and snorkel under professional supervision. The island is yet to be decided but will be either Grand Bahama or Bimini. Important: The group will leave the USA to enter the Bahamas, and so a Visa may be required. This also requires a second entry into the USA. Day 10, 3 June Seaquarium Students will spend the day at the Seaquarium on a field trip that will teach students about wildlife conservation and life sciences, including marine mammal shows & presentations and a Reef Ranger Research Report. Day 11, 4 June Boat Cruise and Sightseeing We start the day with a boat cruise along the Miami coastline, including looking at Millionaire s row. The rest of the day will then be spent taking in the sights of Miami in small groups before heading to the airport. The group will fly Qatar Airways and will depart Miami at 19:20 and arrive in Doha at 16:55 5 June Day 12, 5 June Travel Day The group will continue their journey home on Qatar Airways departing Doha at 20:05. Day 13, 6 June Arrive in Singapore The plane arrives in Singapore at 9:05am.
