International Visitation to the Northern Territory Year ending March 217

The following is a summary of information relevant to the Northern Territory tourism industry including visitation results from Tourism Research Australia s International Visitor Survey, overseas and arrivals information from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and airport traffic data from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics. This report has been prepared by the Strategic Research team June 217 Estimates in this report are based on survey data and therefore affected by sampling variation. The total sample for the Northern Territory for Year Ending (YE) March 217 was 1,823. SCAND NZ SG* CN+HK+TW CA DE JP UK CH NL IT US FR Percentage change (%) Visitor numbers (') Summary of the International Market for the Northern Territory Total international visitation to the NT grew 5.9% on the previous year, with increases in visitors coming for holidays and visiting friends and family enough to offset the declines in both business and employment visitation. Key results from the NT holiday market: Holiday markets which did not perform well year on year included France (-26%), Italy (-7.6%) and the United States of America (USA) (-14%). Up until YE September 216, USA holiday visitation has been leading NT growth, however the market has slipped more recently for the NT. The greatest bulk of the growth in international holiday visitor numbers for this reporting period was in the Top End (+17%). Visitation to the Centre increased more moderately (+3.3%). International holiday visitation results were mixed for the NT when comparing year ending (YE) March 217 to YE March 216. International holiday visitation to the NT for YE March 217 grew 7.7% on last year s results, with a return in holiday visitors from some of our traditional markets such as Germany, as well as our high growth potential market Greater China. All other jurisdictions experienced stronger growth than the NT leading to a further decline in market share, dropping -.2 percentage points to 6.% in the YE March 217. International holiday visitors who did come to the NT spent more (+2%) overall and stayed more nights (+1%). Key holiday growth markets were Greater China (+51%), New Zealand (+53%), Germany (+12%), Other Europe (+2%), Scandinavia (+75%) and Canada (+44%).
