YOUR ITINERARY Day 1: Board your overnight flight to Copenhagen! Day 2: Copenhagen Aalborg Arrive in Copenhagen Travel to Aalborg for your homestay Transportation to Aalborg and all homestay arrangements have been organized by your Group Leader Days 3-7: Aalborg Homestay in Aalborg Your Group Leader has arranged your homestay in Aalborg for this portion of your tour. Day 8: Copenhagen Meet your Tour Director in Aalborg and transfer to Copenhagen This city traces its roots back 1,000 years, to the age of the Vikings. It was here that philosopher Søren Kierkegaard became the father of existentialism and Hans Christian Andersen penned such stories as The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea, and The Emperor's New Clothes. Despite its long history, Copenhagen stands today a modern city, brimming with innovations of technology, modern art, music and theater. 6:30pm Dinner in Copenhagen 8:00pm Check in to the hotel Day 9: Copenhagen 8:00am Breakfast at the hotel 9:00am Guided Sightseeing of Copenhagen Enjoy a guided tour of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy-tale city. Pass by the town hall and Tivoli Gardens, the city's lively amusement park. Continue past Christiansborg Palace (seat of the Danish Parliament), Rosenborg Castle, the old stock exchange and the Royal Theatre (home of the famous Royal Danish Ballet). Stop at the courtyard of Amalienborg Palace (the royal residence) before seeing the statue of the fabler's Little Mermaid, watching over Copenhagen's harbor. 11:30am Climb the Round Tower The Round Tower or Rundetaarn was built by Christian the IV in the 17th century. Denmark was quite famous for its astronomical achievements and contributions thanks to the astronomer Tycho Brahe. After his death in 1601 the King wished to honor Brahe's legacy and continue his research by erecting this tower where astronomers could work for years to come. Climb up the spiral incline inside the tower or 209 meters to reach the observatory deck at 36 meters above the old city of Copenhagen! Day 9: Copenhagen (continued) 4:00pm Visit the Tivoli Gardens Visit the Tivoli gardens and amusement park right in the center of Copenhagen. The gardens are filled with flowers, a lake, a merry-go-round of Viking ships, a Ferris wheel and the biggest roller coaster in Denmark. Enjoy a fun evening and hopefully a splendid fireworks display. 7:00pm Dinner in Copenhagen 8:30pm Return to the hotel Day 10: Copenhagen 7:00am Breakfast at the hotel 8:00am Excursion to Elsinore 9:00am Guided tour of Kronborg Castle Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles and famous for its association with Shakespeare's Hamlet. It houses collections of Renaissance and Baroque interiors, a 62-metre long ballroom and a beautifully preserved chapel and the statue of "Holger the Dane". 11:30am Lunch (at your own expense) 1:00 Visit the Maritime Museum in Elsinore Newly opened in 2013, the Maritime Museum of Denmark is filled with interactive exhibits and has been internationally-recognized for its architectural design. Danish identity is strongly and historically influenced by its connection to the sea, and the life of the sailor! See how this has influenced fashion and culture while you wander through narrow and labyrinth-like exhibitions with surprises around every corner! 4:00pm Return to Copenhagen 5:30pm Dinner in Copenhagen 7:00pm Canal Cruise Enjoy your final evening in Copenhagen on the water. As you cruise through its many canals, you will truly get to see the city from a unique perspective. Pass by different landmarks on the city skyline, including the Børsen, or Old Stock Exchange, one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen. 8:30pm Return to the hotel 12:00pm Lunch (at your own expense) 1:30pm Visit Christiansborg Palace Visit this former royal residence which now houses the Danish parliament, Supreme Court, prime minister's offices, and the Royal Reception Rooms. A guide will lead you through richly decorated rooms, including the Throne Room, Banqueting Hall, and the Queen's Library. Afterwards, you might want to visit the underground ruins, and the Royal Stables
Day 11: Copenhagen 7:00am Breakfast at the hotel 8:30am Excursion to Roskilde 9:30am Visit the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde 11:00am Visit the Roskilde Cathedral 12:00pm: Lunch in Roskilde (at your own expense) 2:00pm Return to Copenhagen 3:00pm Visit Rosenborg Castle & Gardens Built by Christian IV in the 17th century, this red-brick, Renaissance-style castle houses everything from narwhal-tusked and ivory coronation chairs to Frederik VII's baby shoes -- all artifacts from the Danish royal family. Officially, its biggest draws are the dazzling crown jewels and regalia in the basement Treasury, which houses a lavishly decorated coronation saddle from 1596 and other treasures. Try to see the Knights Hall (Room 21), with its coronation seat, three silver lions, and relics from the 1700s. Room 3, another important attraction, was used by founding father Christian IV (lucky in love, unlucky in war), who died in this bedroom decorated with Asian lacquer art and a stucco ceiling. The King's Garden (Have) surrounds the castle, and the Botanical Gardens are across the street. 6:30pm Dinner in Copenhagen 8:00pm Return to the hotel Day 12: Depart for home Transfer to the airport for your return flight Your tour director assists with your transfer to the airport, where you will check in for your return flight home. Itinerary is subject to change For complete financial and registration details, please refer to the Booking Conditions at www.eftours.ca/bc.
