Greetings and welcome to our newsletter for September 2016. Our monthly meeting at EoB was well attended and we took the opportunity to present donations for 1,500 to each of our chosen charities from our New Forest Run. Jane Burton from Simon Says and John Bloomfield from Solent Dolphin accepted the cheques and outlined where the money will be spent and is explained later in this newsletter. We welcomed two more new members, John & Steph Drew from Sway who have an MG RV8 in Woodcote Green. We look forward to seeing them on our events and activities through the year. Three members, Karen (Editor), Linda and Robin took up the opportunity to join Solent Dolphin for a trip out on their vessel, Alison MacGregor, on Southampton Water. A group of members travelled down to join Bournemouth & Poole for their annual gathering and picnic at Athelhampton House on the first weekend. On the second weekend our organised 3 MG Car Club day at Hamptworth Golf & Country Club appears to have gone down well with our members and those from Bournemouth & Poole and Salisbury MG owners. Beyond expectation, over 50 cars and 78 people turned up which stretched the assigned car park area somewhat. I have been asked about a repeat in 2017!! Our mid-monthly at The Elm Tree at Hightown near Ringwood had a good turn-out in fine weather. On Saturday 17 th September there is a large group of members heading southwest to join Tamar Valley MGOC for their People & Places Run on the Sunday. Apart from two, we are all staying at the Moorland Garden Hotel where we are booked for a table of 26 including four from Gloucestershire MGOC on the Saturday evening. See reminder later about travel down and food orders.

You should have heard from me about doing a New Forest Re-Run on 25 th September with a carvery meal at The South Lawn Hotel to finish. There is no limit on entries but there is on the carvery meal at South Lawn of 36 maximum. If you did not do the New Forest Run I would be grateful if you could donate 20 for the route book, rally plaque and finisher s plaque. There will be a Traditional Sunday Lunch menu with 2 courses at 14.95 / 3 courses at 18.95. Tea/coffee with after dinner mints are available at 2.25 per person. No pre-order is required but please let me know in good time that you will be taking part and attending the hotel for lunch, and no later than 10th September, so I can advise the hotel of numbers. We are planning to arrive at 1500 and sit down to eat at 1530. The mid-monthly for September will be held at The Master Builder s at Bucklers Hard on Wednesday 21 st September. The mid-monthly for October is currently planned for the White Swan at Mansbridge but we are looking to change this. Please let me know if you have any ideas for an alternative venue. Enjoy your events this month and safe driving. Editors Notes: Hi everyone, I have received many items this month to let you all know about. It has been a very busy month again with lots of outings and events being attended by our members. In this month s Newsletter I have included letters received from the Recipient Charities that benefited from all your efforts on the New Forest Run. There are quite a few reminders and details of up and coming events including details of the Pumpkin Run, being organised by Clive, and more details regarding Christmas from Pauline and Belinda. Fiona sent us an Update on our ever improving, amazing Website and also a great report on the Hamptworth 3 Club Run. Robin has been extremely busy, providing us with comprehensive reports on Poole Bay Fireworks, the Mid Week Outing, our visit to Solent Dolphin and the Piddle Puddle Run. I think you missed your vocation Robin as a Journalist! Thank you once again for everything you send in to me, I couldn t do it without you and, I am, as always most grateful. Have a great month! Karen

Letters received from our Chosen Charities for the New Forest Run Donations Hi Robin I write to thank you, on behalf of the Board of Directors, for the kind donation of 1500 to Solent Dolphin for the ALISON MacGREGOR. We are increasingly busy with The M/V ALISON MacGREGOR undertaking 335 trips last year with 3,477 passengers. Whilst I am sure that our Skippers and crew enjoy the trips just as much as our passengers it is only with contributions like yours that we are able to continue to cover our operating costs. Please thank your Committee for looking after our Deputy Chairman, John Bloomfield and in closing our renewed thanks for thinking of us as a Charity to support. Regards Pete Wales General Secretary Dear Robin On behalf of Simon Says I would like to thank you and the members of the Southampton & New Forest MG Owners Club for supporting Simon Says at this year s New Forest run. We were delighted that you chose to support us for a second year and I know that Kimberley and the Simon Says family very much enjoyed the day. It was a pleasure to come along to your August meeting and receive the cheque and talk to your members. The donation will be going towards resources that we provide to schools and to train volunteers to help teachers dealing with bereaved children in the school environment. Many thanks again for your support. Kind regards Yours sincerely Jane Burton

You will notice that I have once again updated the banner photo. This was taken at the lay by in Copythorne at the start of our run to Hamptworth on the 3 MG Clubs Day Sunday 14 th August. We only just managed to get all the cars into that lay by!! I am happy to have photos submitted by members taken at any event that either we have done as a club or on your own during the season that can be used for the banner on the website. Either email me direct on webmaster@1009mg.org.uk or post them onto Shutterfly.com. Don t worry about the size as I have software that I can use to re-size to fit the space across the top of the front page. I am already starting to put events into the calendar for 2017 if you know dates for any event, run or picnic; please let me know and I will add it to the calendar. Keep an eye on the calendar to see what is up and coming. Members Cars Page: a couple of photos sent to me last month and also two new/returning members added to this page. I will collate some photos from the main gallery and put these onto the Members Cars page please let me know if you do not want a photo of your car here. Still proving to be popular for a drop box for all your photos. If you have forgotten the log on details, just drop me an email webmaster@1009.mg.org.uk plus take a look at the April 2016 Newsletter for the how to guide on uploading your photos. I am still using the link from the Shutterfly site to our website so that you can view all the photos that are uploaded. Fiona

Tamar Valley Run We eventually found a pub for a mid-way stop which was able, and willing, to take a party of eighteen for lunch. Hence we will be stopping at The Greyhound Country Inn at Fenny Bridges just west of Honiton. At the Moorland Garden Hotel we have a table of 26 reserved for the Saturday evening at 1900. I now have received all the food selections for both venues. Thank you. New Forest Re-Run You should have heard from me about doing a New Forest Re-Run on 25 th September with a carvery meal at The South Lawn Hotel to finish. There is no limit on entries but there is on the carvery meal at South Lawn of 36 people maximum. If you did not do the New Forest Run, I would be grateful if you could donate 20 for the route book, rally plaque and finisher s plaque. That is the amount members who assisted with the run paid as an entry fee. There will be a Traditional Sunday Lunch menu with 2 courses at 14.95 / 3 courses at 18.95. Tea / coffee with after dinner mints are available at 2.25 per person. No pre-order is required but please let me know in good time that you will be taking part and attending the hotel for lunch, and no later than 10th September, so I can advise the hotel of final numbers. We are planning to arrive at 1500 and sit down to eat at 1530. A meeting time at East Boldre will be assessed and notified prior to the day. Christmas Dinner!!!! Yes I know and I apologise for using the C word but Selfridges started back in July! To all members that are attending our Christmas Dinner in December I would like to refer you to the reminder below from Pauline and Belinda. Numbers were set at fifty but for those members who are new to the club and may wish to join our dinner and prize-giving evening, you may be able to contact the hotel direct and make a booking, indicating you are part of the Southampton & New Forest MG owner s party. If you do can you please let me know and I will pass your name(s) onto Pauline. You will have to pay the full amount of 39.95 on booking. Accommodation may be available still at discounted rates so if you require that please ask the hotel. Our dealings are direct with the hotel at 02380 286126 The full address is Moorhill House Hotel, Shappen Bottom, Burley Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 4AH Robin

Pumpkin Run If there is any interest, I will re- run the Pumpkin Run on Sat October 8th to the Pumpkin Festival Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley SO31 5GA We last did this in 2014 and had nine cars. The run will again be 50-60 mile run around Test and Meon Valley ending up at the Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley for the Festival about 12:00. Given the uncertainty of attendance and weather, there will be no bookings, this run will be low key allowing people freedom to group together and tune their day as they wish. The core will meet in Waitrose carpark at Romsey to leave at 09:45. This gives runners the option of self-organizing coffee or breakfast at one of the local cafes before the start and to end at Netley. The provided route will be about 2 hrs, Romsey > Stockbridge > Alresford > Netley. Last time many took a comfort break in Alresford Station. Entry to the Festival is optional but it is a good event and the Southampton Ukulele Jam will be playing, as will other bands. There`s also plenty of stalls and food outlets for lunch or you could bring a picnic. This year s entry fee is 5 including parking in the Festival area. If anyone is interested, email Clive Oliver - clive.oliver3@btinternet.com but given there are no "bookings" runners can turn up on the day after downloading the route from the 1009 website if they wish.

Southampton & New Forest MG Christmas Dinner/Party Night As members know, we are having the above dinner/dance on Saturday, 10 December 2016. As the hotel requires full payment before the end of October 2016, we would cordially request your full payment of 30 per person ( 60 per couple) be paid to either Pauline Holt or Belinda Neave by the first meeting in October. Please make cheques payable to Southampton & New Forest MG Owners Club Should anyone have a problem with paying by this date ie, holidays etc, please could you contact Pauline or Belinda PRIOR to that date and advise when the money will be received. Unfortunately, the hotel have put these date restrictions on us and we need to ensure we have the full funds to pay them as required. We are in the process of obtaining a menu, and this will be circulated to members for their meal choices shortly, again, these need to be with the hotel by the end of October to enable them to cater to our needs. Many thanks for your help in this matter. Pauline and Belinda

Poole Bay Cruise with Fireworks Thursday 29 th July A large contingent of members braved the A31 to make their way to Poole Quay to embark a boat for the leisurely cruise around Poole Bay. The fresh wind meant we remained inside the bay although we did get close to the entrance near the chain ferry. All members met up on the quay and having embarked departed from the quay by 2000. An onboard barbeque was underway served in the stern whilst the bar appeared to do a brisk trade with local bottled ales and wine. Having been close to the Brittany ferry coming in to Poole as the night closed in, we sat off the quay to enjoy a spectacular firework display. The boat was booked until 2300 and true to form we docked alongside at 2300 for members to disembark with reasonable alacrity! Some found a local pub still serving and had one for the road, although not the drivers I might add. Some mirth was found in the local car park, where a member couple had forgotten which floor level their car was parked. I was to learn later that another member couple had even gone back to the wrong car park!! Possible candidates for Sned s Spoon this year!!! Anyway, a great evening was enjoyed by all, and well done and thank you to Colin and Jenny for making the arrangements.

Mid-Week Outing Monday 1 st August After a member asked about the possibility of some daytime outings during the week, we had our first one to visit our fellow member Gary at his new pub at Steeple Langford. Seven cars met at the Empress for a guided route across the forest via Telegraph Hill, Downton, Netherhampton, Wilton and the lane along the Wylie Valley up to Steeple Langford. At the pub we met with two more cars so seventeen members in total. We had pre-ordered food so once drinks were arranged we were soon sat at a reserved set of tables together and tucking into lunch. Unfortunately the weather threatened to spoil the day although those who could did start with tops down although by the lights at Netherhampton all had tops up except brave Jon Holt who drove into the pub with his top down. Well done Jon. After a pleasant couple of hours we made our various ways home, some stopping at Wilton Outlet Village. A good day and I will be looking at other mid-week opportunities for a short drive out and mid-day pub visit in the coming months. Gary was very grateful for the visit and has asked me to pass his thanks to all those who came along. Robin

Solent Dolphin and Alison MacGregor - Thursday 11 th August On a mainly overcast day with a light to fresh breeze three of us met in the Hythe Marina car park to join the boat for a two hour trip with other local visitors and supporters. After a short safety briefing and ensuring we were sat down as instructed, we cast off and manoeuvred out of the basin and through the lock just on low water. The skipper took the boat up to Hamble Point then into the River Hamble for a slow but steady bimble up to Burseldon where we turned and headed back down river, taking in the various sights of cruisers, yachts, and others in between. Our donation has been used to enable the boat to run an Automatic Identification System (AIS) through its electronic chart display. This enables the Alison MacGregor to be identifiable to other water users, large and small, as well as providing the helmsman with information to identify other vessels. This benefits the safe operation of the boat as well as providing additional information for the passengers. It was very pleasing to see the benefits our donation has made to the team and we thank them all for their welcome on board. Robin

Some members cars parked on the driving range! 3 MG Owners Clubs + 3 different runs + 1 final venue = a fantastic day out in our cars! Southampton & New Forest members met in the lay by on the Copythorne road close to the school. There were a lot of us and we only just managed to get everyone into the lay by. Robin handed out our route; this was to be approximately 30 miles to conclude at Hamptworth Golf & Country Club. At approximately the same time in Dorset and Wiltshire the Bournemouth & Poole MGOC and Salisbury MGOC were also gathering at their starting location to commence their run to Hamptworth. We set off from Copythorne using our tulip route. Under the M27 and continued through the Forest heading towards Fordingbridge via Blissford and Stuckton from here we navigated our way towards Damerham, Sandleheath and Rockbourne before the villages of Whitsbury, Upper Burgate and Breamore. Finally, trundling through the village of Lover and into Hamptworth. It was a beautiful sunny morning and certainly a lovely run for us all however; there were some mumblings about a dodgy route I was flying solo and I admit that when you are on your own in the car you do not have that added time to read the directions to the full, so I just look at the diagram and arrow. I must rest my case by saying turn left out of the lay by - Really? With a total of 48 cars booked between the 3 MG Clubs and others turning up on the day the parking was a challenge. Just over 50 vehicles managed to squeeze onto the allocated parking area with the surplus being parked on the edge of the driving range, hoping that they were all good golfers! Robin organised the tickets for the BBQ and there were in the region of 81 tickets sold, plus other meals purchased on the day at the bar. A good turn out and we kept the staff extremely busy for the afternoon. A big thank you to Robin and the other Area Secretaries for arranging this event and hopefully we will be able to put this in the calendar for next year. Fiona

Piddle Puddle Run Sunday 21 st August 2016 On a pleasant sunny morning, twelve MG s, one Triumph Stag and Tizzy gathered at The Furlong car park at Ringwood. As a change to the usual Dorset adventure, and keeping clear of Bournemouth Airshow traffic, Colin and Jenny had devised a route taking us north and into Wiltshire. Thus, like the old bus companies we now have the Hants and Wilts tour as opposed to the Hants and Dorset!!!! The route took us onto Southampton Road and over the A31 to complete a circular route of Poulner, Hangersley and Linford before heading north past The Alice Lisle at Rockford and the lanes of Hyde, Stuckton and Frogham coming out onto the B3078. From The Fighting Cocks at Godshill we drove around Castle Hill enjoying fantastic views across the River Avon to Breamore before passing through Woodgreen, Hale and Redlynch to stop at The Cuckoo at Hamptworth for coffee just before midday. Suitably refreshed we headed west towards Downton then north taking in Alderbury and the lovely villages of Farley and Pitton. Skirting around to the east of Salisbury we drove under the imposing earthworks of Old Sarum then up through the Woodfords before heading down towards Great Wishford then onto the A36 up to Stapleford and The Rainbow on the Lake. There we enjoyed a roast lunch provided by member, Gary Hitchcock and his team. Gary has asked me thank all those who came for lunch. Well done and thank you to all who came along in your cars and hope you enjoyed the day. Well done and many thanks again to Colin and Jenny for providing another interesting route of about fifty miles with excellent stops. Who would like to organise a similar run for next year? Robin

Club Merchandise Having recently bought a couple of polo-shirts with the club logo, I thought I would remind existing members and highlight to new members of a shop in Portswood which holds our club logo for embroidering onto any clothing. You can also take along your own to be embroidered. The service provides very reasonable prices and is quick. Our order was available next day. Just say it is for the Southampton & New Forest MGOC Robin

With beautiful views over the Beaulieu River and set at the end of the grassy street that is Buckler s Hard village, it is difficult to imagine a more picturesque setting for a hotel on the whole south coast of England. What s more, The Master Builder s is located on Lord Montagu's Beaulieu Estate in the New Forest National Park and just a few minutes' drive from Beaulieu Palace House and the National Motor Museum. The Master Builder s House Hotel, Buckler s Hard, Beaulieu Estate, Hampshire. SO42 7XB Tel: 01590 616 253 Fax: 01590 616 297 Enq: enquiries@themasterbuilders.co.uk Mid monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month and are held at a different pub within the Southampton & New Forest Area. There is no format, just an evening to catch up with other members, perhaps enjoy a meal together and chat. Details of the different venues can be found on the 1009 Web Site Calendar.
