WY Outside CHALLENGE 2015 This is your WY Outside Challenge scorecard! Keep track of the activities that you complete by checking the box next to the activity. Make sure you take a photo (or have someone take a photo) of you completing each task. When you reach 200 points, you will receive an official WY Outside Challenge Master Certificate signed by Governor Matt Mead and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow, and be entered into a drawing for the chance to win several prizes, including outdoor gear and a 2016 annual pass to Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails. Check the wyoutside.com website for updates on awards. All activities must be completed in the 2015 calendar year. Three Main Rules: 1. Take photos, videos, or audio recordings of all activities 2. One scorecard per person or family 3. Enjoy the Outdoors! Please take all precautions and evaluate your ability carefully. If you are a minor, please make sure you always have permission and adequate supervision to complete each task. By taking part in this Outside Challenge you assume any and all risks associated with taking part in this Challenge and the associated tasks. Know Your Parks Camp in a national park Sleep in a fire look-out in a national forest (15 pts) Have a picnic in a state park Attend an Interpretive program in the Wyoming outdoors Have a Leave No Trace photo shoot of your campsite. Visit LNT.org for details. Take a family photo in your Wyoming outdoors Find pictographs at Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites (15 pts.) Bonus: Draw your own pictrograph and send us a picture (5 pts.) Why did you draw what you did? Camp in a yurt. Visit wyoparks.state.wy.us to find yurts in your area. Hike the Jenny Lake Trail in Grand Teton Find a herd of bison in Yellowstone Visit a historic site and watch a re-enactment Hike on a national historic trail and take a photo of you on the trail ruts

Outdoors Skills/Skills Development Use a map or GPS to place yourself on a topographic map Coordinates: Use a compass to pick out a feature or landmark in one of the four cardinal directions your location. Tell us what the landmark is and where you are. (10pts) Landmark: Create an emergency first aid kit for hiking or camping. Send us your list of first aid and emergency items Draw a map of your favorite natural area Bonus: Draw a map of your favorite hiking trail and send it to us Make a list of all the things you need to safely camp overnight Write up a plan describing the location of a campsite you re staying at, how long you intend to be there, your route of travel, and when you think you ll be back. Leave the plan with a family or a friend while you go camping (15 pts) Learn to tie three new knots Build a fire without a propellant Bonus: Cook your dinner over it. What did you make? Investigate Make a plaster cast of a wild animal track and identify the common and taxonomic name of it (20 pts) Photograph and identify each of the following types of rock igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic (15 pts) Photograph and identify four different species of native birds Bonus: Witness a lek and photograph a sage grouse Exercise caution to avoid disturbing an active lek. Park appropriately and do not leave your vehicle. Photograph and identify three different amphibians Photograph an identify four native species of wild flowers Bonus: Create a book of pressed flowers Photograph and identify three different big game mammals, identify the common and taxonomic names Visit Yellowstone and take a picture by the sign Find a natural dam in a creek or river, photograph it, and create a story about how it got there Make a fact sheet about your favorite Wyoming native animal. Include an illustration Identify a constellation. Draw and send picture. Identify the common and taxonomic names of at least five trees around your home Celebrate Arbor Day the last Friday in April, or Earth Day, April 22 Bonus: Complete all the tasks in the Investigate section and compile a nature journal or a two to three minute video about your experiences. Thrill Seeking Many of the thrill-seeking activities carry a level of inherent risk. Ensure that an adult, or a qualified instructor, is present to support these activities. Go rappelling Go white water rafting or tubing down a river Waterway: Attend a mountain bike race Bonus: Participate in the mountain bike race Participate in one event of the 2015 Rev3-Cowboy Tough Adventure Race (20 pts) Event: Go downhill skiing or snowboarding Go cross country skiing Go snowshoeing Build a shelter out of snow Bonus: Spend the night in it (15 pts) Climb on a glacier (20 pts) Create and Reflect Write a poem that captures the essence of your favorite outdoor place in Wyoming. Using found natural materials like sticks, pine cones or even water create your own song (or a soundscape) with melody and beat. Record it and send us your tune. Build a miniature boat out of materials you find outside. See if it floats Create a short video of what WY Outside means to you. Bonus: Participate in the WY Outside Youth Video Contest (20 pts) Nature Journaling: create a simple book and use it to document an outdoor adventure. You can use photos, drawings, words and anything else you can think of! Art: Past, Present, Future: Visit a historic site in Wyoming. Use a single sheet of paper for three drawings. First, draw what you think it looked like 100 years ago. Were there roads or trails? Manmade objects? What animals and insects lived here? Now draw what you see in front of you! What will the site look like in the future? Draw what you predict. How might the types of animal and plant species change in the future? Sit outside for 30 minutes and write down what you see and hear WY Outside Challenge Page 4
