Cambridge Parks, Trails, and Recreation Commission Meeting Tuesday, February 16, 2012 A regular meeting of the Cambridge Parks, Trails, and Recreation Commission was held on Tuesday, Febi-uary 16, 2012, at Cambridge City Hall Council Chambers, 300 3' d Avenue NE, Cambridge, Minnesota, 55008. Members Present: Anderson, Lund-Ziebarth, Soderquist, Buttaca olx;.and Weisbrod. Members Absent: Caulk ( excused) Staff present: Public Warks Director Steve Wegwertli: Call to Order and Pledge of Allegiance Weisbrod called the meeting to order at 7: 03 n and led the public witla he pledge of allegiance. Approval of the Agenda Lund-Ziebarth moved, seconded by A passed 5/ 0. rson to approve th agenda as presented. Anderson`ix ved, seconde by Soderquist to move the sign to Water Tower Park. Motion passed 5/ 0.=` Memorial Bench Lillian Blank died at; 05 years old. Bench placed with a plaque memorizlation their family. Settled in Cambridge right after the war and were long time citizens of Cambridge. They have a memorial fund and they would like to purchase a bench. 10th and Old Main St across from the BP station. Right down the street where their home was. The plaque would memorialize. Wegwerth presented the standard type of bench downtown. Wegwerth stated it is wood that Public Works would stain. They would use plastic but they noticed that the center starts to sag over time. They have had little to no vandalism and will be bolted to the February 16, 2012 Page 1 of 3
concrete. Anderson stated he felt it was a good idea but would be opposed to a very large memorial plaque. Carlson stated it would be a 5 x 7 or 4 x 6 and wouldn't take up the entire bench and would be very tasteful. Buttacavoli stated it makes more sense now to allow the benches on the trail system and encourages walking. Soderquist asked if the City has a policy on benches. Wegwertl stated what the Commission recommends will go to City Council for final ap a. Website Upda s, Wegwerth stated it was requested thatthe website be up ed. Lund- Ziebarth recommended adding active links to tli site. Wegwerth,s ted he will talk to Woulfe to find out what they would like to do as far as they want staff t; c plete the work or if it should be contracted out. Soderquist asked if staff c h e a page for u dates. Wegwerth reported that staff is asking SEH to rede op the City Park Rei italizat t Nlaster Plan and bring to the Parks Commission to recommer] pproval to the City Council. Wegwerth reviewed the changes to the Master Plan. Anderson stated he tliink playground so that a1t, at once. the smaller playground should be moved closer to he newer ie kids get to play together so parents don' t have to be in two places Buttacavoli stated he went to the park and he talked to people and received some recommendations. Buttacavoli stated there are walkways and paths through the park but they don' t bring people to the playgrounds. Buttacavoli stated there could be better access to the equipment especially for parents with strollers. Buttacavoli stated people would like to see animal clean up stations and additional lighting for safety. Buttacavoli stated that permanent or semi- permanent restrooms have been a request, especially at the sledding hill along with seating at the top of the hill so families can at the top. recommended a sun shelter, a performance stage and a main gathering point. Buttacavoli stated some recommended removal of the tennis courts and asked for a fishing pier for the river. Lund- Ziebarth suggested changing the tennis courts to basketball courts since there is a lack of basketball courts throughout the City of Cambridge. Lund- Ziebarth recommended doing something at Brown Park for the older children. Lund- Ziebarth stated Geocaching is a growing activity and would be a nice feature in City Parks along with volleyball courts. Wegwerth stated staff will request City Council' s approval to mo e forward and the next step would be to have a meeting with new site designs. City Council Updat Wegwerth updated the Commission on City Council`meetin s.
