Stagecoach South annual performance May 2009 to April 2010 greener smarter travel

introduction Stagecoach South provides local bus services across Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex with some routes extending into Berkshire and Wiltshire. We are based at our head office in Chichester with local depots in Aldershot, Andover, Basingstoke, Chichester, Portsmouth, Winchester and Worthing. We are a subsidiary of Stagecoach Group plc, an international provider of bus, coach, tram and rail services in the UK, USA and Canada. Our aim is to provide safe, reliable, punctual, clean and comfortable services with a good value for money range of tickets and fares. This annual report covers the year from May 2009 - April 2010. annual performance

key facts 34 million passenger journeys were made on Stagecoach South services. 19 million miles operated within Hampshire, Surrey & Sussex to carry passengers. 99.2% of all services operated 91.4% of journeys turned up within 5 minutes of the scheduled time 428 buses operating on over 115 different routes across Aldershot, Guildford, Camberley, Andover, Basingstoke, Winchester, Portsmouth, Chichester, Worthing & Brighton with some routes extending into Newbury and Salisbury. over 1000 employees working across the 7 depots which serve Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire & Wiltshire. Highly Commended in Bus Industry Awards for route 60, Bognor Regis to Midhurst via Chichester, - Marketing Campaign of the Year category. May 2009 - April 2010

2009-2010 operational performance statistics Our services We operated a total of 19 million miles over the year. Like all businesses, we have been affected by the national economic recession, but have endeavoured to maintain services as far as possible. Our key measure of performance is the reliability and punctuality of our services. In the past year we operated 99.2% of our scheduled services, with 0.2% failure due to internal reasons, and 0.6% due to external reasons (including, in particular, the bad weather experienced over the Christmas and New Year period). We monitor our services for punctuality and 91.4% of our services operated within 5 minutes of their scheduled time, traffic congestion being again the main reason for delay. We continue to seek improvements both through rescheduling services and in discussions with our local highway authorities. We have agreed a partnership scheme with Hampshire, Surrey, Wiltshire & West Sussex Councils as well as Portsmouth & Winchester city councils, to work together to improve and invest in our commercial services. 91.4% of journeys ran on time Our fares We endeavour to provide value for money fares and to re-invest our profits in new vehicles and equipment. In addition to our standard single fares, we offer unlimited travel day, week and period tickets. Details of our Dayrider and Megarider are published online at www.stagecoachbus.com/south and you can now save time by buying season tickets online. Despite the recession, our programme of careful cost control has meant that we have been able to freeze nearly all of our fares for the year. Stagecoach South annual report 2009-2010

Our passengers We carried a total of 34.2 million passengers over the year. We received a total of 2731 passenger complaints about our services, representing one complaint per 12,500 passengers, a decrease of 19% over the previous year. We comply with our industry code of practice, and every complaint is investigated and action taken to avoid repetition of the problem. we carried 34.2 million passengers during 2009-2010 Our community We play a big part in the local community and we enable thousands of people to go about their everyday activities. We have Quality Bus Partnership schemes set up in all the major towns and cities we operate in,where we work together with our partners, in particular local authorities, to improve local bus services. We work with many local organisations to improve transport access and information, such as hospitals, business centres and colleges. We also support a number of community groups and charities, such as The Prince s Trust in Bognor Regis, The Hampshire Talented Young Athletes Scheme, The Rowans & Phillis Tuckwell Hospices and a number of smaller groups and clubs.

Our achievements In the last year, we have introduced 21 brand new buses on the popular Coastliner 700, which runs between Brighton & Portsmouth via Worthing & Chichester. Due to this investment in vehicles, we have been able to transfer modern, easy access buses to other routes, such as the 37 between Havant & Petersfield, X64 & X65 between Winchester, Alton & Guildford and the 76/86 routes across Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester. With each launch, we have encouraged new people to try the new buses by running promotional campaigns and offering discount vouchers in leaflets distributed to households along the route. During the year, we ran a targeted telemarketing campaign in Basingstoke, providing information and free travel to local people who were not already using the bus. We were also highly commended in the UK Bus Awards for our marketing campaign for route 60, Bognor Regis to Midhurst via Chichester, 'Travel Route Sixties Style.' Our staff We are a major local employer with 844 drivers,153 engineers and cleaners, and 51 supervisors and managers all based locally. Despite the economic climate, we have not made any staff redundant, or reduced their hours or pay, as a result of the recession. 550 drivers have achieved their NVQ qualifications and all our drivers have completed the first stage of their Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Our engineers are all skilled workers and we employ 8 apprentices to provide skills for the future. Our supervisors and managers have all completed relevant training courses for their various professions. We are a major employer in the local community, with over 1,000 staff.

Our fleet We operate a fleet of 428 buses of which we replaced 21 over the past year with a total investment of 3.6 million. 72% of our fleet (excluding school buses) is low floor to provide easy access for the elderly, disabled and buggies. All our vehicles are inspected by our engineers at least every 3 weeks, and maintained to much higher standards than the legal minimum, to ensure safety and comfort. Every vehicle is cleaned daily. 3.6 million invested on new buses Our environment We used 2.2 million gallons of diesel last year, at an average of 8.48 miles per gallon. We are working to improve fuel consumption through technical measures, and all our drivers have completed a Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving (SAFED) course. Stagecoach Group has recently achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing energy consumption and has announced a challenging CO2 reduction programme for the next 5 years. All our fleet runs on low sulphur diesel, with a high-tech additive Envirox to reduce pollution and improve fuel consumption. Vehicle engines must meet increasingly higher Euro standards of exhaust emissions. 57% of our fleet meets at least the Euro 3 standard. We recycle most of our waste, such as litter, used oils, filters, batteries, parts, etc. We also recycle the water we use to wash our vehicles every night. greener smarter travel
