Model A Flyer Model A Ford Club of NSW Inc Web site www.modelafordclubofnsw.com.au April 2018 Club Meetings are held at Holroyd Community Centre, Miller St., Merrylands. The parking entrance is in Newman Street. Meetings are held from 8 pm on the second Friday of each month unless otherwise stated. I wish to inform you that member Edward Cram from Kiama passed away on 22 nd March 2018. I express my condolences to his wife Lorraine and family on behalf of all the members of the Model A Club of NSW. I attended Edwards funeral held in Kiama to represent our club. He was a well-respected man in Kiama and this was evident by the large number of people who attended his funeral and those who spoke about his life. The Northern A s invited me back to attend their March run which was lunch at Swansea RSL. A great day out and well organised. Members from Sydney should consider attending some of the President Robert Brown 0439 731 066 V/President Ron Elks 0419 296 201 Treasurer Charlie Sharpe 0404 014 583 Secretary Helen Sharpe 0429 998 958 Committee #1 Ken Young 0428 697 717 Committee #2 Jim Allingham 0418 674 059 Public Officer Rob Taylor 0434 314 198 Membership Charlie Sharpe 0404 014 583 PRESIDENT S REPORT Northern A runs. They would love to see you. The run to Parramatta Park was a good day and members who attended had an enjoyable time. You may have noticed I have been organising some of the Wednesday Wanderers runs. These are places I would like to visit. It is amazing the number of interesting places to visit if you start looking. So, come on, start looking around and call Tom Virgona and organise a run. I wish to thank those members who do attend the runs organised by our club. It is important to build friendships and get to know fellow members. This is what our club is about, getting out and enjoying ourselves. David Burrell, the editor from Retro Auto Magazine informs me he has all the information he needs for the article re the Model A Ford to be published in the July 2018 edition. He is in the process of finalising this so thank you to those who kindly allowed David to use your story. Vale Eddie Cram On 29 th March 2018 I attended the funeral of Edward (Eddie) Cram on Kiama on the NSW south coast. Although I did not know Eddie, I felt after listening to the tributes from family and friends I did know him. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He married his wife Lorraine on 27 th May 1961 and they had 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A loving husband, giving his wife a kiss every single day. A NRMA tow truck driver in the 50 s and 60 s. Service manager for Pember s Motor Group in the Illawarra. Eddie then had a milk run in Kiama. In the late 70 s he bought a newsagency in Kiama. (Crams Newsagency). A mechanic by trade, he was always helping fellow car club members when ever they broke down. Always stopping to help. An active member of the South Coast Vintage Car Club, The Model A Ford Club of NSW, The Mini Minor Club of NSW and also the delegate for the SCVCC to The Council of Motor Clubs NSW for 10 years. Eddie was a perfectionist. He attended night school for many years learning motor trimming, panel beating and spray painting. He drove around Australia in the car trials in the 50 s and 60 s, the last being the Ampol Trial in a Morris 850. Eddie his 1928 Model A Ford and joined our club in September 1996. His dream was to do the Bay to Birdwood Run in Adelaide in his Model A Ford. Eddie was well respected in the Kiama region, the church overflowing for his funeral. The old car movement has benefited from our association with Eddie and we offer our condolences to Eddies wife Lorraine, children Lyn, Karen, Wendy and Scott and their families. Robert Brown President Model A Club of NSW Berrima District Historic Vehicle Club Rally, February The Berrima Club put on a fantastic weekend rally in February in Mittagong. I drove down Friday night for the weekend and had just the best time. Saturday morning I checked in to rally HQ, and then in the afternoon there was a 32km run to Bare Greens at Canyonleigh. This 130 acre property grew an incredible assortment of fresh herbs. On the way back to Mittagong we also visited the Eden Brewery. Sunday morning was a short run to the Historic Mi agong Aerodrome which was constructed in 1944. A er we all arrived the locals put on an air display. At midday we drove back to rally HQ for lunch, and the presenta on of car judging prizes. I was very lucky and won Best Restora on 1931-1940 Group of Vehicles and Best Vehicle in the 1931-1949 Category. So it was a great way to finish a wonderful weekend. Would be fantas c for the Model A Ford Club to consider a ending in 2019. Ken Warburton.

Northern A s Run to Swansea, March It was a lovely day which started at West Wallsend Coffee on Carrington for the Newcastle group, and great coffee shop in Lake Munmorah Shops for the southern group. Lorraine & Peter Michaels met Edna & Ron Cox plus President Robert Brown from Sydney. Sadly there was no Central Coast representation. All cruised the eastern side of Lake Macquarie to meet up for lunch at Swansea RSL. Five Model A s and 16 people enjoyed the excellent scenic venue, great company and ideal weather. Thanks Barry Murdoch for organising. Di Paice. Some things to ponder?? What if my dog only brings back my ball because he thinks I like throwing it? If poison expires, is it more poisonous or is it no longer poisonous? Which letter is silent in the word "Scent," the S or the C? Why is the letter W, in English, called double U? Shouldn't it be called double V? Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and It just takes 75-100 years to fully work. Every time you clean something, you just make something else dirty. The word "swims" upside-down is still "swims". Intentionally losing a game of rock, paper, scissors is just as hard as trying to win. 100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses. Your future self is watching you right now through memories The doctors who told Stephen Hawking he had two years to live in 1953 are probably dead. If you replace "W" with "T" in "What, Where and When", you get the answer to each of them. Many animals probably need glasses, but nobody knows it. If you rip a hole in a net, there are actually fewer holes in it than there were before. If 2/2/22 falls on a Tuesday, we'll just call it "2's Day" (It does fall on a Tuesday) 100 years ago a Twenty Dollar bill and a Twenty Dollar gold piece were interchangeable. Either one would buy a new suit, new shoes and a night on the town. Note that the Twenty Dollar gold piece will still do that. Model A Travelling from East to West Coast TOM O Toole is set to undertake an adventure in his 1930 A Model Ford across the country with his best mate, Keith McIntosh. The pair hopes to raise awareness and money for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Centre. Check out their progress at http://www.tomotoole.com.au/blog/

Wednesday Wanderers Telstra Museum Bankstown Visit in April Report The day started with the biggest traffic jam Sydney has experienced (30 km). Luckily the man threatening to jump off the Bridge was talked down. So eleven Wanderers finally arrived by 10am and the Virgona s by 11.50. It was well worth the effort with an introductory movie followed by our volunteer guides talking us through the switchboard s, telephones, morse code and flying doctor beginnings. We were also shown the workings of the time recording and how the cricket news was relayed to the listening public. It was very informative and well worth the effort, I would recommend a visit. We then adjourned to the RSL next door for lunch. Maureen Allingham How many of these phones have you put a penny in??? ROADSIDE TROUBLE SHOOTING OF AN ELECTRICAL FAULT TO GET HOME Should you find that you have no 6/12 volts at your distributor points, then the bypass lead & switch may get you out of trouble or at least home. The common short in the wiring can be found eventually, but an intermittent open circuit well that's a bigger problem. You can experience the above with the modern on/off switch and more so the original pop out switch. There is a very fine line of contact in the pop out switch between on/off. Should you decide to go ahead and put together the bypass lead and switch then you will have to carry out the few tasks. WIRE RUNNING FROM COIL TO SIDE OF DISTRIBUTOR Check to see what type of connection you have at the distributor. if you have a loose wire coming out of the distributor then your task is easy. 1. The wire is usually soldered to the base plate so all you need to do is cut the wire and join one end of the bypass wires to the wire coming out of the distributor. 2. The other end connects to the red wire on the coil. 3. Providing your car has the original wiring setup then the red wire will be on the left side of the coil. That is, for right hand drive cars it will be on the driver's side. 4. Now, remove the red wire and replace it with the other end of the bypass wire. ARMOURED CABLE RUNNING FROM DISTRIBUTOR TO COIL If your car has the armoured cable connection at the distributor and clamped to the #8 head stud then you will need to: 1. Remove your distributor from the head. Loosen the screw at the side of the head and see if you can lift the distributor. Better doing this now rather than in the middle of nowhere. 2. Remove the head nut holding the cable clamp and lift the distributor out. 3. Unscrew the distributor from the cable and screw in the bypass cable put the distributor back in the head. 4. Connect the other end of the bypass cable to the coil as described previously. 5. The stud holding the clamp is usually longer than the rest so you will need to replace the clamp until you get home. 6. Retighten the head nut to 55/lbs. 7. Remember leave the original red wire on the coil disconnected. Hope this helps someone, someday. Mal Bradley.

Editor Parramatta Lakes Run in March This Sunday was predicted to be a scorcher, but it started out quite pleasant. But only the brave travelled in their Model A s. Parramatta Park was a picture with lots of people securing prime positions near the water. Our crew secured a great covered picnic area which provided plenty of shade and seating. We had about 18 members and their families turn up for morning tea. El Presidente cooked fish on the bbq. Those with Model A s took off before midday to get home prior to the main heat of the day. It was a lovely run, considering the rest of the day was spent inside. Model A Ford Group of NSW
