Disaster cost trend

Disaster Costs in SEE: Between 1999 and 2009 The estimated loss in South Eastern Europe is around 34.425.270.000 $ Total number of people affected is 8.022.050, The death toll: 23.864 For natural disasters during the last decade, data on deaths are missing in about 10 per cent of the disasters; around 20 per cent lack information on the total number of people affected, and about 70 per cent do not cover economic damages Vacuum effect: are not limited to the first impact, the consecutive secondary after effects, such as loss of jobs, diversion of business interest, social and psychological effects usually creates a vacuum effect in the disaster hit areas and destroy the lives of inhabitants in long term as well Source: EM-DAT: The OFDA/CRED International Disaster Database, www.emdat.be - Université Catholique de Louvain - Brussels - Belgium

Disasters in the Region Hungary declared a state of emergency after about 600 000 to 700 000 cu m of toxic tore through local villages, killing three people and injuring 100 more.

DPPI SEE Projects DPPI SEE member countries and DPPI SEE partners have initiated, developed and implemented various projects during the past half decade and today DPPI SEE is still working on several projects in SEE Region

DPPI SEE Projects --- DMTP Disaster Management Training Programme DMTP: the programme is prepared on the basis of needs, interest and training capacities of the SEE countries. The main goal of the DMTP is to enhance disaster preparedness and prevention in the countries of SEE through common disaster management education and trainings. End users/beneficiaries: Disaster Management Authorities from both national and local levels, * DMTP is listed as the main activity item in the Strategic Plan of DPPI 2009-2011

Disasters jeopardise sustainable development for all the countries. (UN Millennium Goals) Disasters do not respect political borders. Only multi dimensional, multi disciplinary efforts can reduce impacts of Disasters. Cooperation and strong will is the key to success DPPI is best tool to be used for a better DRR activities in SEE Region
