HOSTEL GUIDELINES You are welcome to St. Joseph s College Hostel. We, at this Hostel, believe that personal discipline is the outward reflection of the maturity and inner disposition of an individual. In order to ensure the best use of facilities available here and also in the interest of efficient and orderly functioning, the following guidelines are presented for the attention and adherence of all concerned. General Information, Rules and Regulations 1. The hostel provides accommodation with facilities for food, both Non-Veg and Veg. Those who are not comfortable with this mess arrangement are advised not to take admission in the hostel. 2. The hostel has a Director and two Wardens. They will maintain the decorum of the place, maintenance and mess. 3. St. Joseph s Hostel and its premises are maintained as Alcohol and Tobacco free zone. Hostellers are not expected to drink liquors or smoke in the hostel or come intoxicated to the Hostel. They are liable to disciplinary action, even dismissal if found smoking or drinking or drunk or in possession of alcohol, drugs or any smoking materials. 4. Insubordination, habitual laziness, unbecoming languages or conduct, obscenity in word or deed renders a hosteller liable to dismissal. 5. Students are not to gather in the rooms of other hostellers. 6. All hostellers are expected to behave decently both in and outside the hostel. The hostel will take note of any serious misconduct outside the campus by the hostellers. 7. All hostellers have to have their own bed lamp, bucket & mug, mosquito net, bed sheets, pillow and mattress. 8. The hostel must be kept clean at all times. Littering the rooms or premises with wrappers, waste papers, defacing the walls or damaging property are offences. 9. Individual and double room safety and cleanliness is occupant s responsibility. Do not paste anything on the walls. 10. Cleanliness of the dormitory is the responsibility of every occupant. However, the house-keeping will do the general cleaning. 11. Once a week there will be general cleaning of the hostel premises. All students are expected to be present for the cleaning work. 12. Garbage should be discarded in the prescribed manner only. 13. Water & fruit juice bottles should be separately disposed of. 14. Take special care not to throw anything in the toilet flush to avoid blockage. 15. English is the medium of communication in St. Joseph s Hostel out of respect for the multilingual nature of the community. All hostellers are expected to speak in English in the premises. 16. Rooms are allocated by the Warden. The Warden may make changes in the room s allotment at any time of the year. 17. Students are required to retire to their individual rooms latest by 09.30 pm; lights may be kept on in rooms after 09:30pm, only for studies. 18. Keep all your belongings in the lockers. The management is not responsible for the loss of individual belongings. The hostellers are discouraged to bring costly items into the hostel. 19. Visitors (Parents & Guardian) are to be received outside the hostel gate. In exceptional cases if anyone needs to be taken to the rooms, it is to be done with the explicit permission of the Warden. Friends and classmates are not to be brought to the hostel. 20. Ironing facility is available on each wing and laundry space above common washrooms. Ironing to be done only in the place provided. 21. Any complaint regarding the hostel may be promptly reported to the Warden. 22. All are expected to participate in all the Hostel activities.

23. All are expected to hand over the room keys to the Warden after locking their belongings when they are out for vacation. 24. Hostellers are encouraged to participate in college activities and join associations and thus develop their potential. 25. All hostellers are expected to reach the hostel one day before reopening and leave within three days after the semester exams. Permission should be obtained for any change. 26. When you vacate the Hostel take all your belongings with you. Hostel will not be responsible for anything left behind. Meeting with the Warden & Permissions 27. Parents/Local guardians may meet/call the Warden, once a month and learn about the progress of their wards. For a personal meeting appointment is essential. 28. Only on 1 st Saturday of every month hostellers are allowed to stay outside. Besides that hostellers cannot stay outside the hostel without the prior permission of the Warden. 29. When you take leave from attending the classes, you need to report it to the Warden. All leave notes and marks cards will have the signature of the Warden. 30. After each test, students have to submit a copy of the marks to the Warden. 31. Every hosteller should meet the Warden at least once in a month and inform him of the progress he makes in his studies and other activities he is involving in. 32. The hostellers are not allowed to go out of the campus during the week days. Incase of emergency, permission should be obtained from the Warden. 33. The hostellers are free to go out of the Campus on Sundays with the knowledge of the Warden. They are expected to be back in the campus before 07.30 pm (on Sundays). 34. While leaving campus with special permission the hostellers are required to enter their time of departure, destination, contact telephone number and the Time of return, in the register kept with the security. Absence from meals must be informed to the Warden at least three hours in advance. 35. For all kinds of permissions you need to meet the Warden in the Hostel Office between 8.30 pm and 9:30 pm on all working days. 36. Once a month overnight stay out is permitted on first Saturday- Sunday of the month. Students have to report back to the hostel by 9.30 pm on Sunday. In case of overnight stay outside the hostel on any other day special permission needs to be obtained from the warden. Payment of fees 37. Payment of hostel fees is done through the bank. Every student must pay his fees before the beginning of the academic year. 38. Fees once paid will not be refunded. 39. Instalment facility is available to the deserving candidates on personal request. 40. Mess charges are paid at the beginning of the month. Students failing to pay the bills within the stipulated time would be liable for fine. Sickness 41. Any serious illness has to be reported to the Warden at the time of admission. 42. Hostellers have to inform the Warden if any of them are sick and the Warden in turn will do the needful. 43. Meals may be brought to the rooms only when the occupant is sick and needs bed rest. Hours, Silence, Attendance & Exams 44. Hostellers are to keep silence from 6:30 pm to 7:40 pm and 09.30 pm to 07.30 am.

45. Hostellers are discouraged from the use of Mobiles and other gadgets during the study hours. Total silence has to be maintained during the study hours to help every hosteller to study. Use of gadgets for reasons other than studies will lead to confiscation of the same. 46. During the study hours, rooms have to be kept open for inspection by the Warden. 47. Hostellers have to take their study seriously. Those who fail in the CIA, Midterm and semester exams will not be allowed to continue in the hostel in the following semester. 48. Hostellers have to maintain a minimum of 85% attendance at any given time. Those who have less than 85% will not be allowed to continue in the hostel. 49. Those who frequently absent from classes without prior permission from the Warden will be dismissed from the hostel. 50. During study hours; Perfect silence is to be observed in cubicles/rooms. Music; Light or loud and Assembling in others room/dormitory is forbidden. Sports, Entertainment, News Papers & Postal 51. The college has large ground for out-door games. Cricket, football, basketball and other games have to be played in the college ground and not on the corridors of the hostel or hostel campus. 52. Outgoing mail may be kept in the box provided. Daily clearance is done at 10.30 am; Incoming mail will be kept in the dining hall usually at lunchtime or tea time. 53. Newspapers are kept in the reading room. Kindly read them there and do not take them outside the reading room. 54. TV is available for use between 8:30 pm and 09.30 pm (Week days). Prior permission from the warden is required to use TV beyond 9:30 pm. Requests for the same has to come from the Cultural Secretary. a. On Saturdays from 8:30 pm to 11.00 pm. b. On Sundays from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm to 10:30pm Water & Electricity 55. Water and electricity are non-renewable energies or resources hence, should be used sparingly. Lights and fans should be put off and water taps closed when you come out of the wash room. Let us use the natural resources carefully. 56. Failure to switch off lights, fans in rooms would attract penalty. Food & Dining Hall 57. Meal timings mentioned on the Notice Board have to be strictly adhered to. 58. Plates and cups are to be placed in the Dining Hall. 59. Strict decorum and discipline is expected in the dining hall. 60. Wastage of food is not tolerated. 61. During ill health anyone needing special food may make arrangements with the Warden, through the health Secretary. Do not deal directly with the Kitchen staff. Hostellers are not permitted to enter the kitchen. 62. Drink only filter water provided. Dress Code 63. All need to maintain dress decorum in the Chapel, Dining Hall and in common places. Dress code for the chapel & dining hall: Pants and shirts/t-shirts. Body show to be avoided in the common places (i.e. outside your room/dormitory). Except on general holidays, while entering the college campus hostellers need to wear Pants and shirts/t-shirts. Spiritual Exercise; Time Together All the Roman Catholics and Christians will be attending Eucharist on stipulated days. At the same time non Christians will be spending their time in prayer. In the evening there will be a prayer service for all the hostellers. Attendance for spiritual activities; the daily Mass for all Christian students, Morning Prayer for the Non- Christian students, Sunday Mass for Catholics and Evening Prayer for all the hostellers.

Those who have shortage of attendance for spiritual activities will be dismissed from the hostel at the end of the semester. Dismissal/ suspension Any serious violation of the above mentioned hostel guidelines would result in immediate dismissal or suspension from the hostel.
