Why invest in the Northern Territory? Australia s Northern Territory is a very attractive tourism investment option for many reasons including its well established reputation as a global tourism destination and its geographic location on the doorstep to Asia. The Northern Territory has a stable population and is experiencing solid growth in visitation driven by a strong, diverse economy. Strong Domestic Visitor Market The Northern Territory s domestic visitor market has shown consistent strong growth. In 2015/16, overnight expenditure in the Northern Territory reached $2.22 billion, a 19 percent year-on-year increase, which was greater than the national average of +8.6 percent. Total visitors grew by 28 percent to 1.735 million, with year-on-year growth that outperformed all other states and the national average due to double digit growth from the domestic market. A record number of 577,000 domestic holiday makers travelled to the Territory, an increase of 27 percent on the previous year. Our key target markets of interstate and international holiday visitors had a combined increase of 6.4 percent. Commitment to Tourism The NT Government is committed to the promotion of the Northern Territory as a tourism destination through innovative tourism marketing campaigns via its dedicated agency Tourism NT. The NT Government also directs additional funds to public sector infrastructure such as roads, national park infrastructure and urban precinct development to further support the tourism sector as a key economic driver. In addition to the NT Government, local tourism marketing organisations in Darwin and Alice Springs actively promote their respective destinations throughout Australia. Purpose-built conference centres in Alice Springs, Darwin and at Uluru (Ayers Rock) position the NT as a premier business events destination. NT Major Events, an NT Government agency is dedicated to successfully delivering an annual calendar of major events across the Territory. To contribute to a vibrant hospitality labour pool, a wide range of hospitality training courses are available in both Darwin and Alice Springs through Charles Darwin University. Strategically positioned close to Asia, the Northern Territory s tourism industry is a compelling opportunity for investors looking to expand their portfolio and capture the growth from new and emerging markets. The NT Government s goal is to double the visitor economy to A$2.2 billion by 2020 and we are well ontrack to achieve this ambitious target. Competitively Situated to Asia Travel Markets The Northern Territory holds an enviable location as Australia s Gateway to Asia. Darwin, served by an international airport which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is closer to Asia than any other capital city in Australia. Darwin is in close proximity to significant tourism and business markets and within four hours flying time from Darwin: Northbound are 8 capital cities, 69 international airports and 485 million people. Southbound are 6 mainland capital cities, 23 international airports and just under 24 million people. With more than half the world s middle class predicted to come from Asia by 2020 and its record travel growth, the Northern Territory is more competitively situated to benefit from this large travel market than any other Australian destination. Commitment to developing Northern Australia Northern Australia s economic development is a priority for the Australian Government seeing it as vital to the nation s economic future, long-term security and regional engagement. The Northern Territory is at the centre of this commitment. In order to promote private sector participation in the major infrastructure required to develop the north of Australia, the Australian Government has a $5 billion Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. This initiative demonstrates a significant commitment to build Australia s north and importantly, to major infrastructure developments that will benefit the tourism sector. The Northern Territory has been enjoying a period of strong economic growth, outperforming the nation across most economic indicators. The tourism sector has seen significant investment in recent years and the Territory s superior economic performance has assisted to diversify the travel market, particularly in Darwin, which receives robust corporate travel and business events visitation, alongside the traditional leisure market. The economic outlook is strong. Deloitte Access Economics estimates that the Northern Territory economy will grow by an average of 3.2 percent per annum over the five years to 2021-22, higher than the national average (2.9%).
