This region, with its rich Islamic traditions of art and science and strategic role in world trade, has seen unprecedented development in the 21st century. Join me this winter for a journey through the alluring capitals of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, to explore the past, present, and future of these fascinating countries. A special highlight of this meticulously curated program is an afternoon at the newly opened Louvre Abu Dhabi, along with an introduction to the other institutions in the Saadiyat Island cultural complex, designed by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and others. We will delve into the storied past of the region with excursions to the peaceful 19th-century Bastakiya Quarter of Dubai and to Nizwa Fort in Oman, whose underlying structure dates back to the 12th century. We will browse the bustling souks of Muscat for exquisite gold, copper, and silver jewelry, and savor a private, Arab-style barbeque at Jabreen Fort, constructed in the late 17th century by a learned ruler as a monument to peace. As a historian of Islamic art, I am especially excited to tour the just-opened Jameel Arts Center, on the waterfront in the historic heart of Dubai. Its contemporary galleries offer a fascinating counterpoint to the collections of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha an I.M. Pei-designed architectural gem filled with exquisite glass, ceramics, textiles, and other works from the 7th century onwards. Join me to discover the marvelous Middle East, from ancient Bedouin settlements to ultramodern architecture, on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Sincerely, Courtney Ann Stewart Senior Research Assistant, Department of Islamic Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB Traveling with You Courtney Ann Stewart Courtney Ann Stewart joined the museum in 2010 and serves as Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Islamic Art.
