Burning wood as a fuel, means savings for you As the cold winter months draw near, you may be looking for more efficient and effective ways to heat your home. When the frost sets in, you have probably found that the size of your utility bills steadily spirals upwards. You may currently have natural gas, oil, or use electricity to heat your home but no matter what type of heating system you use, installing a Multi Fuel Stove will save you money on your heating costs. You will probably have heard of multi fuel stoves and know that they work by burning a variety of different fuels in order to function. Heritage Stoves use a variety of different fuels that are inexpensive to purchase and can be found in bountiful supply locally. The fact is that if you have a Heritage Multi Fuel Stove as opposed to an oil or gas burning stove, you could actually save yourself up to 90% on your fuel bill every year. Hot Home, Hot Water, Hot Savings Heating your home with a Heritage Multi Fuel Boiler Stove gives your family plenty of hot water, as well as running a complete central heating system. By heating your home while burning wood as fuel, you are also reducing your CO 2 emissions and helping the environment. When fitting a boiler stove it is essential that you employ a trained qualified plumber or heat engineer as connecting to your existing system will require specific expertise. Linked Heating Systems Linked systems can be very flexible and can allow you to take advantage of seasonal differences in available power. For example a linked system allows you to use solar thermal panels in the warm months to provide hot water (when you do not need your heating on), but then switch over to a wood boiler stove to provide heating and hot water in the colder months when solar radiation is less. A linked system is also ideal if you want to reduce your gas or oil consumption as it allows you to link in a wood boiler stove. When the wood boiler stove is going your gas/oil boiler will have less work to do and consequently you will use less gas/oil. Wood as fuel, good for the environment Wood is now recognised as a Carbon Neutral fuel. It is a renewable energy source and because of the Carbon Cycle of Wood as a Fuel, it helps the environment. However wood contains moisture and this moisture can be bad for your appliance both from a maintenance and efficiency perspective. Wet or Green wood can be eliminated from your fuel stock by taking a simple moisture reading. Wood with a moisture content of less than 20% is the most suitable for burning and optimising the required efficiencies. Burning wood in your Heritage stove is a cost-effective form of renewable power. Wood used for fuel can easily be replaced by simply growing more; Ireland has a large area of sustainable forestry producing wood products and wood as fuel. When wood fuel is harvested from a sustainable wood source then there is no net increase in CO2 emissions. Using wood fuel to produce heat is an excellent low carbon alternative to oil and gas. There are numerous suppliers now providing kiln or air dried wood for burning, these fuels are readily available and are local to you. Suppliers who are managing a sustainable source of fuel benefit the environment and you as it creates recreational and wildlife sanctuaries, as well as a cost effective fuel source. Why dried wood? Wet or green wood, must dry in the fire before it will burn, using up a large percentage of the available energy in the process. It will also form creosote which will deposit in your chimney resulting in more maintenance of the lining. It is also why the glass of your stove will become blackened and would require everyday cleaning. Dry wood will burn hot, heating up the flue, creating a fast draw and shooting the smaller amount of vapours out of the chimney before they get a chance to condense. Moisture Meters to ensure your wood pile contains the correct moisture content 39 40

Accessories A full range of accessories are available to complete your stove experience: Companion Sets, Fire Screens, Coal Hods, Log Holders, Log Baskets etc. Flue Pipes A full range of flue pipes are available to suit your Solid Fuel Stove. We stock a range of Vitreous Enamel Pipes, Stainless Steel Pipes, Stainless Steel Flexible Liner and Stainless Steel Twin Wall Flues. All fittings and connectors are available. Always ensure your flues are suitable for Solid Fuel. Cleaning & Maintenance Regular maintenance of your flue is extremely important for the efficient and safe operation of your stove. It is also important that you keep your stove looking its best. Heritage provide a full range of cleaning and maintenance products for this purpose, our range includes: Paints Glass Cleaner Fire Rope Wipes Brushes Ash Vacs Flue Cleaner Granite Hearths Heritage offer our customers a range of hearths sized to complement our range of stoves, when you decide on your Heritage Stove, why not consider a Granite Hearth. Selecting your Heritage Stove A stove is selected to meet the requirements of the customer s needs to heat their living space. Once a decision is made to install a stove the next step is to calculate the size of the stove required. It is recommended that to heat 14 cubic meters you will require 1kw of heat, therefore a simple calculation will give you an indication of the stove output required. Example 1: A room 5m x 4m x 2.44m (48.8 cubic meters) /14 will require a 3.5kw Stove. This calculation is based on the room being extremely well insulated, should your room be less well insulated, or have large windows or doors then you can reduce the figure you divide by accordingly. If your room is cold or draughty, then recalculate by /10 to estimate your heat requirement. Example 2: A room 5m x 4m x 2.44m (48.8 cubic meters) /10 will require a 5kw Stove. It is the user s preference to decide the amount of heat they require from their stove; however it is better to err by over estimating as the heat can be controlled from the stove and reduced when necessary. Fitting your Heritage Stove Only a competent person should attempt to fit a Heritage Stove. Once you have selected your Heritage Stove it is important that you carry out a survey on your home to ensure the area selected is prepared for your stove. If you are connecting to an existing flue: Is the flue clean and free from debris and damage and working properly? Is the existing hearth within the size specification to accept the chosen stove? What configuration of flue pipe is required to connect the stove to the existing flue? If no flue exists: Does the area selected allow egress for a new chimney? Does a hearth need to be constructed? What configuration of flue pipe is required to install the stove? The building regulations provide minimum tolerances which need to be adhered to when installing a solid fuel appliance please refer to these for all measurements. Heritage Stoves are renowned for their exceptional quality, and come with a limited 5 year guarantee. All stoves are CE marked with the relevant standards for efficiency, output and safety. 41 42
