Profile Milford provides the kind of scenic backdrop that inspires greeting cards. Its historic Main Street is lined with old-styled shops, bakeries and restaurants, while pretty ponds, rivers and creeks twist through and around its center. While it s not likely any skyscrapers will be coming to the village, it and the surrounding area are growing at the same fast pace as that of other communities in Oakland County. The Village of Milford has seen its population climb nearly 13 percent since 1990, while Milford Township s population has climbed slightly more than 13 percent in the same time period, according to village and township figures. Although the town is growing, small-town flavor is what is bringing and keeping people in Milford. Historic Character A spin though Milford, founded in 1832, reveals more than a half-dozen sites where early settlers established woodworking, woolen, saw and other types of mills. The first to do this were the Ruggles brothers, who erected a sawmill at a shallow, ford in the Huron River, thus the name Milford. Even Henry Ford left his mark here. In 1938, Michigan s greatest industrialist used the waterpower from Milford s mill pond to found a mill to manufacture carburetors. The building still stands on the West End of the pond. Architecture buffs marvel at the many Victorian homes on Milford, Commerce, Summit, and Atlantic roads. The graceful beauties, painted in pastel and jewel-toned colors, are well-preserved reminders of the town s early days. To learn more about Milford s history, visit the Milford Historical Museum (248-685-7308) on Commerce road.
