Mayan Ruins CARACOL MAYA RUINS TOUR Caracol is the largest Maya Ruins in Belize and one of the best destinations for adventure travel in Belize. Situated approximately 25 miles south of Xunantunich, in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, the site was first reported by a native logger named Rosa Mai, who came across its remains in 1937 while searching for mahogany hardwood trees. Take a winding path through the Mountain Pine Ridge and later dense broad leaf forests to the ancient city of Caracol and discover more than 40 monuments, some of them dating back to 1,200 BC. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of this place, which once was one of the largest Maya cities. And if you can, make sure you climb the myriad steep temple steps and be amazed at the views of Belize s untamed jungle. Learn about the Ceiba tree, the tree the Mayas called The Tree of Life and their belief that its roots would take them to the underworld and their branches to the high heavens. The drive through the Mountain Pine Ridge and the Chiquibul National Forest is very beautiful. Explore Rio Frio Cave on the way and stop at the Rio On Pools for a refreshing dip before heading back to your resort. Duration Half day Swimwear

XUNANTUNICH MAYA RUINS Xunantunich is situated on the Western Highway across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz and it can only be accessed by crossing the Mopan River on a hand-cranked chain ferry which leads to the temples. El Castillo rises 130 feet above the plaza level making it one of the tallest buildings in Belize and providing an impressive view of the entire river valley. Xunantunich is the second largest Maya ruins in Belize. The Stone Woman, as per its Mayan meaning, refers to the ghost of a woman claimed by many people to inhabit the site. She is dressed in white and has fiery red eyes. She usually appears in front of El Castillo, ascends the stairs and disappears into a stone wall. Duration Half day This tour can be combined with a guided tour of Cahal Pech Ruins TIKAL NATIONAL PARK TOUR Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of Mayan civilization. Located in the Petén Basin in northern Guatemala, Tikal s Mayan ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Mayas. Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BC, the city reached its apogee during the Classic Period, 200 to 900 AD. During this time, it dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically and militarily, while interacting with other areas throughout Mesoamerica and the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant valley of Mexico. Tikal has been largely mapped and covers an area greater than 6 square miles that included about 3000 structures. This excursion departs at 7:00 AM for a 1.5 hour drive to Guatemala. On arrival you ll meet your expert guide for a four-hour narrated tour. After the tour, you ll have free time for lunch and local souvenir shopping in the park. You will then leave for your transfer back to the border, where your driver will be waiting to take you to your lodge around 5:30 PM. Duration Full day Don t forget your passport! Passport Cash for souvenirs

Duration 2 days -Moderate Don t forget your passport! Passport Overnight Bag Cash for souvenirs CAHAL PECH MAYA RUINS Cahal Pech, whose Maya name means Place of The Ticks, contains some evidence of some of the earliest Maya settlements in Belize. Data recovered at the center indicates that the first settlers began to occupy the site somewhere between 1200 and 1000 BC. Excavation during the past 12 years suggest that during the Classic Period, Cahal Pech and its sustaining area may have encompassed a realm of around 10 square miles. Cahal Pech also contains one of the earliest stela (monument) yet discovered in this region of the Maya Lowlands. Cahal Pech was once a palace home for an elite Mayan family. This ceremonial center includes pyramid temples, palaces and a ball court. It is one of the oldest recognizably Maya sites in western Belize, resting high on the banks of the Macal River. The site was abandoned in the 9th century AD for unknown reasons. Cahal Pech is now an archaeological park which houses a small museum with artifacts from various ongoing excavations.
