FROM RICHARD TIME TO reflect Richard Walker, regional manager of Metrorail Western Cape, looks back on 2016 and lets us in on the road ahead. sincere thank you to all of you who steadfastly continue to travel by train. 2016 A has been a diffi cult and long year for us. Many events threatened to derail our train service, and tested the commitment from our staff and management. Yet, on each occasion, when we were tempted to abandon all hope, our stalwarts found the strength to keep their chins and spirits up, and to continue with their good work. Billy Ocean s song When the going gets tough, the tough get going was never truer than this past year. PEOPLE POWER We are blessed to have many passionate, committed and professional employees. Their sheer determination and guts ensured that vandalised infrastructure, stolen and damaged cables and carriages were repaired in time to transport our commuters home. These largely unsung heroes have been integral to our service recovery eff orts. It is with pride and gratitude that I can report we are slowly winning the battle against vandalism. Trains are on time more frequently and the number of cancellations is dropping. Operation Spider, our festive season safety initiative, is already bearing fruit. TROUBLESHOOTING In the past year, we successfully piloted technology-aided asset protection that enables tagging and micro-chipping of equipment. It also provides kinetic-detection sensors, CCTV surveillance and analysis, and rapid response capability and lighting. We have continued to vandal-proof critical operating infrastructure and to professionalise our security department. We intend to apply for certain key sections to be declared essential services and have requested the revision of the Legal Succession Act fi nes and penalties. We are delighted that the recently enacted Criminal Matters Amendment Bill ensured that a repeat offender cable thief was jailed for 11 years. NEW BEGINNINGS The end of every year heralds the promise of a new one to be tackled with new vigour. The New Year is full of promise and brings us a little closer to off ering our commuters a modern world-class service. Progress is already visible at our Salt River depot and Philippi Station. A new batch of modern hand-held ticket scanners is being rolled out to help combat fraud and fare evasion. From all of us at Metrorail, may the holidays be restful and blessed. May 2017 deliver on our expectations. We are ready to serve you and trust that you will continue to travel by train next year. Best wishes for a safe festive season! Richard Safety is our concern When a train is full, especially during delays, rather wait for the next one. If you hang outside the door, you may lose your grip and sustain fatal injuries. PROFILE TRAVELLING WITH Pete Pete s blog Be part of Pete s adventures and visit www.thingscapetown. blogspot.co.za to follow his blog #CapeTown. Pete Mafutha Louw, a local travel blogger, shares his love for train travel and a few of his favourite destinations. Words: Yonga Balfour WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING? I like to share my life experiences with others so that they are inspired by my actions. I discovered that sharing my experiences with people helps them make more informed decisions. We can learn a lot from sharing and exchanging ideas. IMAGES: COURTESY IMAGES WHAT DO YOU BLOG ABOUT? I blog about all my travels, including the things I see in passing and highlights of a particular destination. I also include my experiences leading up to my travel adventure. WHY DO YOU LOVE TRAVELLING BY TRAIN? It s a safe mode of transport and very affordable. Travelling by train for leisure is also very comfortable. 03_Myline 168_cl.indd 3 WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TRAIN EXPERIENCE? I loved travelling to Simon s Town, mostly because of the awesome scenery of Simon s Town. I love the leafy southern suburbs with Victorian architecture, the Sir Herbert Baker designs around False Bay and the scenic train ride along the coast. I often buy a one-day Tourism Pass and hop on and off between Muizenberg and Simon s Town stations. WHAT ARE YOUR SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUTS? St James is excellent for whale watching. From Fish Hoek Station, you can walk along Jaeger Walk to Sunny Cove and catch a train to Simon s Town. Salty Sea Dog and Harbour View are great stopovers for lunch. You should also check out the Toy Museum or South African Naval Museum. GET YOUR TOURISM PASS For as little as R35 for a day pass and R60 for a two-day pass, you can travel as often as you like between the seven stations on the southern line tourism route, namely, Observatory, Newlands, Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, and Simon s Town. 2016/12/05 2:56 PM
