Piran Just a few minutes by foot away from Bernardin is Piran, a resort city on Slovenia s Adriatic coast, known for its long pier and Venetian architecture. Tartini Square is flanked by the Gothic red Venetian 41

House and the frescoed Tartini House. The latter is the birthplace of violinist Giuseppe Tartini. The 19th-century town hall has a stone lion, a symbol of the former Republic of Venice. St. George s Cathedral, nearby, has 17th-century paintings and marble altars. When in Piran, do not forget to visit the Walls of Piran, which are very well preserved and some of them date back to medieval times. Website: https://www.portoroz.si/en/discover/piran There is a free bus that drives from the parking lot bus station to the Piran Tartini Square. You can reach the bus station if you go out of Grand Hotel Bernardin in the GROUND floor and turn right. Then you go straight forward and you will reach the parking lot with the bus station in about 3 minutes. It drives from 5.30 AM to 1.30 AM every 10-15 minutes. Its modern development began in the late 19 th century with the vogue for the first health resorts. In the early 20 th century, Portorož became one of the grandest seaside resorts in Adriatic, along with Abbazia, Lido and Grado, then as part of the Austrian Littoral. It is now one of Slovenia's major tourist areas. Located in the centre is the Hotel Palace, once one of the most important resorts for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and currently one of the finest hotels between Venice and Dubrovnik. Portorož is the centre of an incredible part of the Mediterranean on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. Portorož, a city with a holiday atmosphere, lies in a leeward bay and has a very pleasant 42

climate due to its proximity to the sea. The whole area is a string of natural attractions and cultural sights, all lined up along only a few kilometres. This small piece of Istria awaits you with countless experiences. Distance to the centre of Portorož from Grand Hotel Bernardin: 2 km Sečovlje Saltworks Just near to the conference venue is also the Sečovlje Saltworks. It is the largest Slovenian salt evaporation pond. Along with the Strunjan Saltworks, they are the northernmost Mediterranean saltworks and one of the few where salt is still produced in a traditional way, as well as a wetland of international importance and a breeding place for waterbirds. They are part of the Piran Saltworks and are located at Parecag in Slovenian Istria, the southwest of the country, at the Adriatic Sea, along the mouth of the Dragonja River near Sečovlje. KPSS Seča 115, 6320 Portorož (9 km from Grand Hotel Bernardin accessible by taxi) Ticket: 6 November opening times: 8 a.m. and 5 p.m Website: http://www.kpss.si/en/intro Valeta Tunel on Parenzana The path of friendship and good health follows the old, 123km long, narrow gauge train track, which connected Trst and Poreč and the inland cities of the Istrian peninsula. The path offers many sports activities and brings together people who enjoy walking, running or cycling. The path takes you through cities and villages, sometimes following the coastline right by the sea, other times leading you through vineyards and olive tree plantations, short and well-maintained tunnels and into valleys and hills. All the tunnels are still well-preserved, the most famous one among them being the Valeta Tunnel, a 550 m long tunnel that connects Strunjan and Portorož. Website: https://www.portoroz.si/en/experience/sights-and-attractions/4479-object-tunel-valeta Valeta Tunel, Senčna pot 27, 6320 Portorož (3 km from Grand Hotel Bernardin) Bernardin Bernardin is a tourist complex located in the western part of Portorož. Its name derives from Sveti Bernardin (literally, "Saint Bernardin"), as the church, now in ruins, was named. Before the construction of multiple complexes, the area was a shipyard for smaller vessels, later moved to the town of Izola. In 1971, the Emona Company from Ljubljana established Hoteli Bernardin, and began 43

working on building the complex. In 1976 the first two hotels, Bernardin and Vile Park were built, with Grand hotel Emona following the next year. Discover Slovenia Interested in seeing more of the beautiful country of Slovenia? Slovenia is a small, beautiful country "on the sunny side of the Alps" which geographically and politically has always been a part of Central Europe. Slovenia is a relatively small country in area, half of the size of Switzerland for example, tucked into a mountainous corner between Austria, Italy, Hungary, and the Adriatic Sea. Everything in Slovenia is in abundance: the majestic Alps with their glacial valleys, rivers and lakes, plenty of forests, mysterious karst caves, the warm Adriatic. From the steep slopes of the Alps, you can reach the world of olives and vineyards in less than three hours. Slovenia's natural features and cultural and historical sites offer plenty of variety for a holiday. You can explore the underground world of grottoes, walk in the clean mountain air of Triglav National Park, climb the peaks of the Julian Alps, admire medieval treasures of old cities and towns and enjoy their museums, concerts, international festivals, fairs, and events, or play on spectacular golf courses. Try your luck in casinos; enjoy the culinary arts and wines of Slovenia. 45

The contrast of Slovenia's landscape surprises first time visitors, all within the country's little more than 20,000 km 2. About fifty kilometres from the capital, Ljubljana, are the Julian Alps, where fairy tale Lake Bled glistens; the Postojna Caves, the largest in Europe, are 35 minutes drive from the capital; and Portorož, a sunny seaside resort just over 100 kilometres from Ljubljana. You can also take an excursion to Lipica, the original home of the famous white Lippizaner horses, to the vineyard country where wines have been produced since Roman times. Area: 20,256 km 2 Population: 2 million Capital: Ljubljana Language: Slovenian (Slovene), Hungarian and Italian are minority languages Climate: Alpine, Continental, Mediterranean Electricity: 220V, 50Hz Time zone: Central European Time (GMT+1, summertime: GMT+2) Currency: Euro If you are looking for a peaceful, value-laden destination with everything - mountains, lakes, seashore, ski resorts, health spas, historic cities and villages, castles and churches - then discover Slovenia, the beautiful country on the sunny side of the Alps.
