President's Message 2012 seems to be sailing right along, and before we know it, it will be time to think winter storage. That s not the thought we should be thinking just yet because there are still a lot of A activities coming up. September is a busy month so be sure to check out the calendar of events and writeups for these events. We had some great events last month. One of the best and most unusual was the Wedding Cake Topper Tour. I heard a couple of members who attended say they didn t think this tour would be as interesting as it was, but we all really enjoyed the event. A big thank you to Barney and Patty Deden for making this possible. Patty was a great hostess and her explanation of how they started collecting and what they found along the way was really interesting. If you missed this tour and wish you could have attended, you can still view the collection at the General Crook House on the Fort Omaha Campus for the next couple of months. The September meeting will be conducted by our Vice President Dale Jergensen. I will be out of town, so he is in charge. You are free to give him a hard time, if you wish. Hope to see all of you at our annual picnic. Drive your A, you ll be glad you did! Don Graves Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, Omaha, NE September 2012 Special Points of Interest: Calendar August s Events Upcoming Events Birthdays and Anniversaries Table of Contents President s Message 1 Upcoming Activities 3 Calendar 6 Birthday/Anniversary 4 Advertisers 7 Membership Info 8 September Tech Talk This month s Tech Talk will be on carburetors with an outside expert. Welcome New Member Bob Benton Bob lives in Omaha and has shown cars at our Ford shows over the years. He has a 29 Roadster pickup and a Model T among other antique cars.

August Activities Frank Cooper Garage Tour It is always fun to see what someone else has collected in terms of Model A parts. I managed to relieve Frank of more than I had planned, but that is the way it goes with these things. Even after we pared down Frank s parts, if you need something, you might want to give Frank a call. It is always a learning experience for me when I see Frank and his stuff. He can tell me what things are, how they work, when they were used, and how to fix things. General Crook House and Wedding Cake Topper Tour On August 26th we had a great tour of General Crook s house located at Fort Omaha after we had a delicious lunch at Tussy s. Patty Deden spoke of her and Barney s collection of wedding cake toppers which they have donated to the Douglas County Historical Society. Patty s knowledge of the cake toppers was deep, and she did a great job explaining cake toppers with figures on them. Those that participated in the tour were; Ed and Millie Jankowski, Bob and Mary McKinney, Howard and Mary Denker, Karen and Don Noodell, Don and Janet Graves, Dot, two granddaughters, and El Gertner, Greg Bowden, John Mabry, Dale Jergensen and Patty and Barney Deden who set the day up for us. Upcoming Activities Annual Club Picnic September 16 The fall club picnic will be held in the City Park in Papillion (84 th & Lincoln) from 10AM to 2PM. The club will provide fried chicken, drinks, and table service. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. We will have some fun games, too. Contact person is Sherri Kunz, 402-493-2211. 2

Upcoming Activities International Model A Day - September 22 If you are not going to Topeka, here is an idea for celebrating. Get your favorite Model A out of the garage, go for a ride, and take a picture of your A at some interesting place or just a place you like to go. Submit that picture at the October meeting and, who knows, you might win a prize for the best picture. It would be great if you included a small sign in the picture saying International Model A Ford Day 2012. We will have some at the meeting or you can make your own. If you want to go digital, we will have a computer to display digital photos. By the way, Howard, a picture of your car in your garage or in your driveway doesn t count! We would like to include all pictures in the October newsletter. If you want to send me a digital image, my email address is dwjerg@gmail.com. If you wish to submit your pictures by postal mail, my address is Dale Jergensen, PO Box 273, Gretna, NE 68028. I will scan it and put it in the newsletter. By either method of submission, I will need all pictures by Sept 29th for inclusion in the newsletter. Grandparent s Day September 9 We have invitations to display our cars at Douglas County Health Center (where we have our meetings) and the Rose Blumkin Home (323 S 132 nd Street). Both displays are from 1 to 3PM. Sign up at the meeting or call Ed Jankowski (402-558-7679) for the DCHC or Dale Jergensen (402-949- 0521) for the Rose Blumkin home. You re all Invited to a Party!! The Douglas County Court House is 100 years old and they want to celebrate. The celebration is on Saturday October 20 th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Some of the things they are talking about having are: an Era clothing display from the Omaha Historical Society, Tours of the Courthouse and displays on the first floor, a Flag raising ceremony, a Barbershop Quartet, an unveiling of the new Douglas County Seal, and CAKE!! They have requested a car display of antique vehicles along 17 th St. next to the Court House, the street will be roped off from traffic. A sign up sheet will be at the September meeting, if you cannot attend the meeting and want to participate, please call Mary Denker at 333-1393. Boeing B-29 Super Fortress Unveiling On Saturday September 22 the newly restored B-29 will be unveiled to the public at the Strategic Air and Space Museum. Festivities start at 6pm with the cocktail hour followed at 6:45 with the unveiling and then a buffet dinner by Parkers. Upcoming Activities Concours d Elegance Car Show in Lincoln with Tour of Homes We have been invited to show our cars in Lincoln on September 23. The car show is in conjunction with a historic homes tour in a really nice section of Lincoln. Entrants in the car show will receive passes to view the 7 homes. If we had to buy a ticket, we would spend $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show. There is no entry fee for the car show. Plus, there are cash prizes for the best restoration, best original car, and the crowd favorite. The show is from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. We will plan to leave McKinney s store in Gretna at 11:00 AM so we have plenty of time (and can make an ice cream stop at Baskin Robbins). There will be a Food Truck Rally near the show, so we can eat lunch there. If you plan to attend, you need to register ahead of time by e-mail. The deadline is September 18. E -mail Ron Tucker at ron@strawberrysprings.com or mrtooker@hotmail.com. If you don t have access to e-mail, call Don & Janet Graves (402-453-7166) and we will register for you. If you have questions, you can e-mail Ron or give him a call at 402-770-7946. MAFFI Museum Update - Building dedication The Summer is flying by and so is the progress on the Museum. It is hard to believe that we are already in mid August. The dedication of the building is approaching fast. I hope to see most of you there. All of your hard work in planning and raising money and promoting the hobby is becoming a reality. Cornerstone Construction is working hard to stay on schedule with the building. Most of the glass is now installed for the front of the building. They are starting to power wash the brick. The tile work on the floor is moving along nicely, but it is a big job! They had 2 weeks in the schedule to lay the tile. Gilmore personnel will seal the tile floor after the tile contractor finishes their work. This will also take two weeks so we are on schedule, but it will be tight for the drive through photos on Sept. 15th. The back wall is complete except for the cap on the roof and touch up painting. The electrician's have put in the maintenance fluorescent lighting, and the theater lights and were finishing outlets yesterday. The first order of bricks for the walkway have arrived! I know many of you are watching the progress on the Webcam and over the next month there is going to be a lot of activity right up front. They are finishing off the canopy. Then the drainage trench will be dug across the front of the building and curb basins will be installed. The road will be widened and a sidewalk will be installed across the front of the building. Lastly, paving for our drive will take place and the brick walk will be installed. It is going to be a busy month. Have fun watching and continue to support the effort any way you can! Jerry Morrissey, MAFFI Trustee 5
