MINUTES OF THE HEARTLAND BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING October 8, 2015 Present: Chairperson Rob Spencer, Councilor Karen Sernecky, Sue Anne Hennessey, Graham Scott, Rebecca Scott, Jacqui Newton Call to Order: Chairperson Rob Spencer called the meeting to order at 1:15 pm 1. Additions/Agenda Approval Moved by Chairperson Rob Spencer that the agenda be approved as presented. 2. Confirmation of September 3 HBC Meeting Minutes MOTION CARRIED Unanimous Moved by Chairperson Rob Spencer that the Minutes from the September 3 Heartland Beautification Committee Meeting be approved as presented. 3. Business Arising MOTION CARRIED Unanimous Tulips arrived and were planted by the grade 5 s on September 30 at the Stettler Town and Country Museum. 4. Statement of Revenues & Expenses There was no motion to accept the statement of revenue and expenses as there was not quarum. 5. Budget will be left until next meeting. Committee not planning to ask for additional money but rather just reallocate the money. 6. The Symposium went well and more discussion will be at the next meeting. Rob will be doing a presentation at the school on Friday regarding winning the youth involvement award. He is hoping to rally some more interest in the Beautification Committee and what we do.

7. 2015 Projects a) Community Gardens Rob will be emailing the gardeners to let them know they will be removing the stakes and rototilling and mulching the sites on Friday the 16 th of October. Td was not happy with the lack of recognition in the local newspaper as they did not mention who the donation was from for the third community garden. Rob will look into another way to get them mentioned. b) Environmental Action- The sub-committee would like input on possibly putting up a walk/bike/time distance map at possibly West Stettler or the SRC or Downtown for next year. They do not wish to put up any more walk/bike signs. The map would have a measuring string and people could figure out from the map how long to get somewhere. It would also serve as a visitors map. Everyone thought it would be a good idea and a location will be looked into further. The cigarette butt receptacles have received lots of good comments and are well used. c) Downtown Park- Council decided that they would like to avoid having names attached to the façades for the downtown park but as Karen pointed out they would not be opposed to fundraising or sponsorship. Council has left the remainder of the design of the façade up to the Beautification Committee. It was recommended that the committee come up with a design and a cost and council will revisit the cost at a later meeting. d) Stettler Blooms e) Banners and Signage f) Tidiness g) Parks and Trees h) Heritage Conservation 6. New Business 7. Correspondence 8. Next Meeting- November 5, 2015 9. Adjournment- Councilor Karen Sernecky adjourned the meeting at 12:58pm

Nov. 2, 2015 "Recycling saves resources It only takes about 1/3 of the resources to make new products from recycled materials as opposed to from new materials. Recyclable materials thrown in the garbage are lost forever. Stettler area has recycling for your paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, and metal. Nov. 9, 2015 "Food waste One third of food produced for human consumption is wasted which also means that the many land and water resources used to produce and deliver that food were wasted. Buy in quantities you can eat. Always use leftovers.

Nov. 16, 2015 "Bulbs vs Bulbs LED bulb: lasts 50,000 hrs, uses 6 8 watts Compact Fluoresent bulb: lasts 8,000 hrs, uses13 15 watts Incandescent bulb: lasts 1,200 hrs, uses 60 watts The higher cost of LED bulbs is quickly made up by lower electrical costs. See more at http://www.designrecycleinc.com/led%20comp%20chart.html Nov. 23, 2015 "Diapers: cloth vs disposable One disposable diaper takes 450 years to degrade in the landfill, so if you think about the 3000-4000 diapers you are contributing per child, it really adds up. Cloth diapers cost less, even when considering the washing energy.

Nov. 30, 2015 "Re-think dryer sheets Dryer sheets eliminate static. Ever wonder how that happens? The clothes are covered in small amounts of chloroform and benzyl acetate, leaving a light, waxy residue that feels smooth and soft. Re-think this.
